CHARLES F. THURBER, OF OLEAN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF THREE-FOURTHS TO OLIVER F. OARLEY, FREDERICK L. GLEASON, WILLIAMS M. ABRAMS, JR., AND LOVINA J. ABRAMS, OF SAME PLACE.
PUNCH AND SHEAR MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 631,137, dated August 15, 1899.
Application filed November 3, 1898. Serial No'. 695.384. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. THURBEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Olean, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punch and Shear Machines and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled 1o in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in machines for punching holes in metal plates and for severing or cutting .metal bars, rods,
plates, and other objects.
The object of the invention is to provide a machine for the above purposes by means of which great power can be exerted upon the punch or cutters, thereby rendering the ma- 2o chine very efficient in operation.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a machine constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line m x, Fig. 1.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 3o 1 designates a metal frame having near its base or lower end a horizontal slot or opening 2' and an anvil or die 3. It is also formed with a vertical rectangular recess 4, in which is located a vertically-movable follower 5, pro- 3 5 vided at its lower end with a punch 6 in alinement with the die 3. The upper end of this follower is beveled, as seen in Fig. 1, and is provided with an inclined hardened-metal bearing-plate 7. The said frame is also pro- 4o vided with a horizontal recess 8, provided at its upper side with a horizontal hardenedmetal bearing-plate 9, and in this recess works a follower 10, having its lower side beveled and provided with a hardened-metal bearingplate 12, inclined to correspond with ,plate 7 and at its upper side `with a horizontal hardened-metal bearing-plate 13, corresponding with plate 9.
The bearing-plate 12 proJects beyond kthe 5o beveled or wedge-shaped follower 10and en-` gages with slots near the upper end of follower 5, so that as said follower 10 is reciprocated back and forth,as hereinafter described, the follower 5 will be raised and lowered. Intel-posed between said bearing-plates are a number of antifriction-balls 14 for reducing friction.
The numeral 15 designatesyalbracket on the frame 1, in which is journaled a screw-shaft 16, which engages with a correspondingly- 6o threaded aperture in the follower 10. This shaft at each end is provided with a pulley 17, fixed thereto and provided with a clutch member 18, with which is adapted to alternately engage a clutch member 19, laterally movable on said shaft and connected with downwardly-dependingarms 21 of a laterallymovable bar 23, provided on its upper side with a number of rack-teeth 24, with which engage rack-teeth 25 on the periphery of a 7o hub 26, pivoted to an extension 27 of said frame. This hub is provided with an arm 2S, y havngaweight 29. This arm 28 bears against a circle plate 30, having a spring-actuated catch 3l, with which is connecteda rope 32, 75 passing over a pulley 34 and connected with a foot-treadle. (Not shown.)
The numeral 35 designates a slot formed in the frame 1, above the base thereof, in which is located a shearing-knife 36.
The numeral 39 designates a rod connected with the shifting bar 23, so constructed and arranged that as the wedge-shaped follower 10 is reciprocated it will alternately strike the same, so as to shift the bar and alternately throw the clutch members into engagement with the clutch .members'of the pulleys, and as said pulleys rotate in opposite directions the screw-shaft will be alternately rotated in opposite directions, so as to reciprocate the follower 10.
The operation will be readily understood, and by the peculiar construction and arrangement great power will be exerted onl the follower which carries the punch and knives, 95 thus enabling holes to be punched in metal plates and metal bars and rods to be cut or severed in a rapid and efficient manner.
When used as a hand-machine,` the clutch and shifting bar can be dispensed with and a fiy-wheel and crank placed on the screwshaft, by which it may be operated.
Havingl thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- IOO l. In a punching or shearing machine, the combination with the frame and the vertically-movable follower, of the wedge-shaped follower, and the screw-shaft for operating the same, substantially as described.
2. In a punching or shearing machine, the combination with the vertically-movable follower, having a beveled upper end and an inclined bearing-plate, of the wedge-shaped follower provided with bearing-plates, the antifriction-balls and the screw-shaft, substantially as described.
3. In a punching and shearing machine, the combination with the vertically-movable follower beveled at its upper end and provided with inclined slots, of the wedge-shaped follower, the bearing-plate secured thereto and engaging with said slots, and the screw-shaft for operating said follower, substantially as described.
4. In a punchingand shearing machine, the combination with the vertically-movable follower having a beveled upper end and formed with inclined grooves, of the wedge-shaped follower having an inclined bearing-plate cngaging with said grooves, the screw-shafthaving oppositelyrotating pulleys at each end provided with clutch members, the movable clutch members, the shifting bars to which said movable clutch members are connected, having rack-teeth, the connecting-rod, the hub having rack-teeth and the weighted arm and spring-actuated catch, substantially as described.
5. In a punching and shearing machine the combination with the frame having the slots and recesses therein of the vertically-mov able follower having a punch at the lower end and formed with a slot, the knives secured to said follower and frame, the wedgeshaped follower` and the screw-shaft for operating said wedge-shaped follower, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. TIIURBER.
