SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,873, dated August 15, 1899.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. FENN, of 1West IVinfield in the county of Herkimer and State of New York,haveinvenled certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Holders; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is t-o provide a type-holder adapted for holding the removable type of hand-stam ps such as are used in post-offices for canceling stamps and marking letters. IVhen no device is employed for holding the type and keeping them in their order, they are prone to become confused and require considerable time and patience to select the proper type. Sundry devices have been heretofore provided for in a measure overcoming this difficulty.
The object of my device is to provide a convenient case-holder which will effectually hold the type in order and from which they can be removed with facility by employing only one hand and in which they can be carefully examined and cleaned.
In the drawings, Figure l shows a front elevation of my improved type-case iilled with type. Fig. 2 shows a side elevation of the same in its normal position. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation after the type-ejector has been operated. Fig. 4 shows a perspective view of the device with the type removed. Fig. 5 shows a side elevation of a moditied form of construction in its normal position. Fig. 6 shows a side elevation of the same after the device has been operated to eject the type. Fig. '7 shows a cross-section taken on line A B of Fig. 2 with the parts in the same position in which they are shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 8 shows a section taken on line O D of Fig. 3 with the parts in the position in which they are shown in that figure.
Referring to the reference letters and iigures in a more particular description, l indicates the body or casing, which is mounted on a backing or base piece 2 by being secured thereto at the point 3 at'the upper end and though it is obvious that the partition 5 can be omitted and the case contracted laterally, so as to hold only a single column of type.
When the two columns are employed, one isf used for numbers or dates, while the otheris used for characters design ating or abbreviating the names of the month. At the upper end the inwardly-turned edges la are'cut away, as shown atc a, making provision for the introduction of the type into the case. wardly-turned edges la of the case are also cut away at the lower end, as indicated by l) b, forming openings at which the type may be ejected. Secured on the back of the case at 6 is a fiat spring 7,. provided on its lower end with a pair of ejector projections 7 a, which are arranged to operate through openings in the back of the case at the lower end opposite the cut-away portions 7'b 7* on the front ot' the case. The ej ector-sprin g, with the ej ectors, is operated by an angular or bell-crank lever 8,
which, as shown1is formed of wire, the inner end or short arm E3a being enlarged and occupying a position back of the spring 7 and on top-of the projection or support 4, the arm of the lever passing out through the opening 4 in the projection or support 4.
The device when filled with type in order is adapted to be hung on the wall and is operated by forcing the lever-handle 8 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. In this operation the ejector projections 7 engage with the lowest type in each of the two columns and force them from their position within the case to a partially-ejected position, as shown in Fig. 3. The length of the projections a is such as to produce this result and not fully eject the type, the back of the case acting as a stop for the ejector. it assumes its normal position, as 'shown in them. After being partially ejected the lever 8 is released,vwhen it immediately assumes its normal position by reason of the tension of the spring 7. The operator thon takes hold of the type and removes them from the case,when the column of type drops down, bringing another type into position to be ejected by a successive operation. After the type has been used it is replaced in the holder` at the head of the column through the cutaway portion or opening a. The length of the device is preferably such that the number of type in use will fill the-column. It will be noted that the face of the type are continually exposed to view, and they may be cleaned with a brush or other means in the holder and without removing.
In the modified form of construction shown in Figs. 5 and G the body or casing l is secured on the back 2a at the point 10 bya spring which normally holds the casing at an angle with the back 2n, as shown in Fig. 5. The ejector projection ll is secured tothe back 2 at the lower end of the casing and in position to enter openings in the back of the casing and partially eject the type, when the as shown in Fig. 6. In order to facilitate the movement of the casing toward the back, there is provided a dependent projection l2 on the case, against which the thumb or finger can be vreadily placed to move the casing. After the type has been partially ejected in this construction the casing is released and Fig. 5, and the operator removes the type, and the column of type descends, as in the previously-described construction. j In either construction if the type from only l one column is used or there is someY change of purpose, the type may be readily forced back into normal position.
It is evident that other changes and modifcations in `and from the constructions described maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
NVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a type-holder, a casing adapted to receive two vertical columns of type, an exitopening at the foot of each column, an intakeopening at the head of each column, and a.
transversely-acting ejector located opposite the exit-openings and arranged to operatesimultaneously on the type at the foot of eacl: column, and a stop to limit the movement of the ejector when the type is partially ejected,-

2.' The combination of a type-casing ai'-, ranged to receive a vertical column of type,
and having on its front, inwardly-turnedy edges l to retain the type in the case: While exposing their faces and said edges l being cut away at the lower end of the case, afford?- ing the type exit-opening, a spring-retracted type-ejector arranged at the lower end ofl case opposite the exit-opening to engage the lowest type of the column only, and means for limiting the movement of the ejector in:
