y IMPROVE) RAILWAY JOINT.. i
TO ALL WHCM IT 'MAYl CONOERN':
Beit known that I," A.. S. McCLURIfI, of Duncan-non, Perry coun'ty, State 'of Pennsylvania', have .invented new and useful improvements in Railway Tracks; and lf do hereby declare the followin'gto be an exact description. thereof, reference 'being had to the accompanyinglfl drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, in whiehl i Figure 1 represents a side View of the track lwith the ward rail set into the main` rails.

-The nature of my invention e'onsistslin the construction ot thewar rail, and thebmode of tting the wird rail into themain rails, and fastening the same'by an opposite brace or guard rail with bolts. I
A 4A represent the main rails, siniilar to the ordinary T-rails,with the outside top flanges out out for the ward rail B to fit in. On the opposite side of the mainl rails a latbar or guardpla te,0, rests-against the main -r-ailsvoneach 'side of the'joint D,Aan(l between the fop and bottom of the flanges and base of the main rails, hevellcd below so as to fit closely to rails, andv under the top flanges of the main rails, to support and strengthen the flanges. The ward. railB is made of steel or. rolled iron, -and its top ange tits into the vmain rails and projects slightly 'beyond their outside langes, and the car Wheel passing over the joints is always on a solid, smooth surface. Themain rail carries over the joint at'the end of the 'word rail B, and the Ward rail carries over the A, so that ifthe joints were mueh'open the wheell cannot drop in to Create a concussion, and the continual jarring of the cars'and noise are avoided; olsomueh labor and expense are avoided to keep the ends of the main rails up that are the canse of' constant repairs. The ward rail Band guard-'plate C erefastened by bolts, extending through' them and the mui-n nails, the boltholes of the 11min- .rails being ovalshapedto allow for the expansion" and contraction of the-rails, The Vmain rails rest on crossties G G G, with an iron plate, H, underneath the rails that'snpports'theujointD, dispensing with the use of chairs.'
What I claiml as my invention, and desire to secure 4by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the ward rail B," when fitted into the I langes.. of the main rails A, and fastened and supported by the guard-plate C, es herein described andlforthe puuposes'set forth.
