IMPROVEMENT 1N Low-'WATER INDICATORS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
Be it known' that I, W. H. LA'UB'ACH, of Philadelphia, Pennsylv ania, have invented an Improved Low- .Water Alarm forSteam Boilers; and I do hereby declare the-following to be' a full,'clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention consists of an instrument fully described hereafter, to be attached `to a steam boiler for tho purpose of giving an alarm when the water becomes unsafely low; also of a device for maintaining the interior of a glass tribe which servesas a water gauge, and which is attached tothe instrument, frcefrom deposit.-
In order to enable others to make and use invention, I' will nowv proceed to describe its construction and operation. Oureference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part'of this speciiicationl Figures 1 and'2 are sectional elevations of my'improv'ed low-water alarm showing the parts in different positions, v I i v Figure 3 is a side view; .and
Figure 4, a. front elevation partly inl-section. v
T0 the front plate Xfof va "steamA boiler are secured two pipes, A and A', which communicate with Vthe interior of the boiler, one vat a pointabove' and the other at a point 'below the proper water level, and ineach' pipeis a socket'fo'r the reception of'bne end of a glass tube, B. From the pipe A projects'a branch, nwhich communicates with a steam-tightcase, C, andthrough thefront of the latter extends a spindle, b, to which are secured the arm e, inside the case, and the arm c', onthe'outside of the same. Within the case C are two levers D E, knife-edge bearings e e, on cach lever',` resting on bearings on 'a frame, F, secured within`the' case,
and the outer end' ot' the lever D is a hook, z', which, when the' levers are in the position Ashown in fig. 1, itsinto a hooked projection, n, on vthe lever E, To the outer vend of the. lever E is hung a weight, d, and from the inner end is 4suspended (by a wire, aiweight or oat, g, the latter occupyingsuch a position within .the tube B that it will be immersed in water when that in the boiler is not below its proper level. i To the outer end of the arm cis hung an adjustable weight, 7i, and tothe end of the arm c is hung a pawl, k, a shoulder, 9:', at the'lower c'nd 'of -which (when thepartsare in the position shown in tig. l) bears on the end oi` the lever D. To a branch, a', projecting from the pipe A, is securedan ordinary steam whistle,V H, the valve s of which is so connected to a spindle, m, as to be opened when the latter is depressed, the spindle projecting above tho top of the whistle, and its end being below the arm c', vThe valve-s is maintained in contact with itsseatvby a spring, o, whichis coiled round the rod m, 'and which intervenes between the top of the whistle andal pin on the'rod. While the float g is immersed in watcr'it is partially sup-ported by the latter, and therefore does not act with its full weight on the lever E, andthe weight d consequently maintains the lever in the position shown in fig. 1. When, however, the'water in the boiler, and consequentlythat in the vtube B, descends below the proper water line a' sc, it no longer a'ids in supporting the. float g, the increased Weight of ,which is exertedon the lever E so'as to more than countcrbalance the weight Lf-thc lever is consequently moved to the position shown in iig. 2.` So long as the lever Dis secured bythe hook n in its -horizontal position, it affords a rest for the pawl 7c, and the latter, with the arnisc and c', is maintained in the positions shown in figs. 1 and 4. When, however, on the descent of 'the water in the tube B, the lever E isso moved as to release the outer 4end of the lever D, the inner end of'the latter 4will be depressed, and the pawl and arms c and c will fall, the a'rm c' bearing on the spindle m and depressing the'valve s, so that the steam is admitted to the whistle and sounds an alarm which indicates to the attendant the unsafe condition of the watcrin'the boiler. The arm c cannot again be adjusted to its irst position until the lever D is secured bythe hook n, which isieifected when, on replenishing the boiler, the lever E resumes its horizontal position.' The arm c may ,then be raised until the pawl '7c rests upon and is supported by the lever D.' It will be observed that the float g is somewhatless in diameter than the interior of the tube B, and that there are,l on the loat projecting pins y y, which are nearly in contact with the tube. A deposit is apt' to collect in the'glass tube, and this deposit would interfere with the free'movement of the iioat but for theseprojections, which, as the float moves up and downfdislodge the sediment.'
I claim ns'my invention, and desire to securev by v.'[ietters Patent- 1. Thc'weighted lever E, controlled by a float or'weight g, and having a projection auapied to a catch or hook on the end of 'the lever D,"in vcombinati@ wtli the .pawl k, arms c, ,weighted arm c,'and whistle H, the whole being arranged and Voperating4 substantially as and for the purpose herein set foth.
The Weight or oat g, and its pr'ojectons y, arranged to'operate in the interior of 'the glass tube B as and fer the p'urpose herein described.
' In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this spcciclation in tlie presence of twosubscribing Witnesses. 1^
