IIENRY R. FRISBIE, OF BELLEVILLE, NEW' JERSEY,ASSIGNOR OF ONE-IIALF TO DAVID DODD, OF NEl/VARK, NEXV JERSEY.
TROLLEY-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,210, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed June 30, 1897. Serial No. 642.920. (No model.)
To all whom, it nur/y cancel-71,:
Be it known that I, HENRY R. FRIsBIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Belleville, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Wheels, of which the following is a specifioation.
My invention relates to trolley-wheels, and particularly to that class which operate as secondary conductors in the overhead electrical trolley system for street-railways.
The object of myinvention is to so constru ct a trolley-wheel that it will be self-lubricatin g and easily repaired. To this end the wheel is constructed of three parts, the center or conductor proper being made of copper or other suitable conducting material, while the two sides of the wheel are made of a cheaper, harder, and inferior grade of metal, so that such sides will outlast many of the centers.
It further consists in forming a Chamber around the center for holding lubricatin g material, like graphite, which will work through holes provided in the bore of the wheel onto the spindle or pin on which such wheels run.
To enable others to understand my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my completed wheel. Fig. 2 isa central sectional view through line a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of the detachable central portion of the trolley-wheel. Fig. 4E is a detail central sectional view of the sides or flanges. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the hub of the central portion of the wheel through line b of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a detail broken view, partly in section, of a modified form of attaching the sides or flanges to the central hub.
Its construction and Operation are as folloWs:
1 is the central or tread portion of the wheel, made of copper, bronze, or other suitable conducting material.
1 is a hub portion having the bore 2 to serve as a bearing for the usual pin or stud. (Not shown.)
3 and 3 are the side flanges, attached to the detachable center by means of the bolts 4, passing through the openings 5 of the web portion of such center. The interveniug space between the said flanges and the hub 1 forms a chamber for the loose graphite 6. 7
are longitudinal grooves in the inner walls of 5 5 the bores of the hub of the ilanges, so as to dispense with the bolts, as shown at Fig. 6, in which the openings, Fig. 3, would still be retained to permit the graphite to have free access to both sides of the secondary conductor or center 1,while the holes 10 in the fianges would not in this case be formed.
11, Fig. 4, is a recess formed in the face of each of the side flanges to admit the circular ribs 12 on the vertical face of the center 1, as shown at Fig. 2. terially in locating the said fianges thereon.
The improved trolley-wheel as above de scribed is far more economical than a solid wheel, as the cost of the interior metal of which theside flanges are made is much lower 8'o than the center, which operates as the conductor, which center will wear out faster than the flanges, whereupon the said center is quickly removed and a new one put in its place. are made entirely of copper or bronze, as is now the case, the whole wheel has to be thrown away. The Chamber for the lubricant is sufficiently large to hold more than enough graphite to outlast any single center, so that 90 when the wheel is put together it will need no further attention until the center has become so far reduced in size as to require another.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 95 Patent, is-
A sectional trolley-wheel consistingof a renewable center having a rim U shape in cross-section a grooved periphery to form the contact, said rim made deeper in its central Ioo portion to enhance its wearing qualities and thcreby prolong its usefulness,a hub on which The said fianges 3 and 3*- are each 60 This feature will assist ma- On the other hand, where the wheels side fianges are supported, a thin central Web ohambers, means for uniting and holding the connecting said hub With said ri'm so that several sections together, substantiallyasdewhen the flanges are mounted on said hub scribed and'for the purpose set forth. side chambers are formed for loose graphite Signed at Bridgeport, in the County of Fair- 5 or other like powdered lubricant, large openfield and State of Connecticut, this 28th day 15 ings in said web to open communication beof June, A.
