Be it known that I, PETER ARMBRUSTER, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Mehlville, county of St. Louis, State of Missouri,
have invented a certain new and useful Improvenient in Hand-Brakes for lVagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and so use the same,reference beinghad to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lV is a side elevational View of a wagon, showing my improved band-brake in I5 position thereon. Fig. 2 is atop plan view of the same, the body of the wagon being partly broken away. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevational view of the band-brake and its associate parts. Fig. it is asectional view online zo 4 4, Fig. 3, showing the hub in elevation.

This invention relates to a new and useful 3o improvement in band-brakes for wagons, the object being to construct a device of the character described which can be applied to existing forms of wagons without changing any of the parts thereof.
The invention consists in the provision of a brake-tread or friction-band detachably secured to the spokes of the Wagon-Wheel, in combination with a flexible band-brake having one end secured to a clip, which clip also 4o acts as a fulcrum for the brake-lever, to which lever the other end of said band-brake is connected.
Heretofore band-brakes have been used on Wagons in which the friction-band Was clamped or secured to the hub of the wheel either by being shrunk or otherwise fastened in position and the band-brake so arranged as to cooperate therewith. These constructions all necessitate the use of a special hub 5o or other device, while my present invention contemplates the application of a band-brake to an ordinary wagon without requiring any change whatever in its detail. By the use of friction-bands attached directly to the hubs of the wheels, especially where the same is shrunk in position, it has been found that the heat generated would cause said bands to expand so as to become loose. By attaching the friction-bami directly to the spokes of thc wheels this objection is overcome in my con- 6o struction.
In the drawings, A indicates the body of a wagon on which is pivotally mounted, preterably in convenient reach of the operator,
a lever B, cooperating with a notched segment O, whose function is to hold said lever in its adjusted positions.
D indicates a brake-rod connected to lever B, which brake-rod is attached at its other end to an arm c of a rock-shaft E, which is 7o arranged under the body of the wagon, its arms projecting on each side thereof, so as to apply the brakes on both rear Wheels of the wagon. Links F are connected to the arms e, which links are likewiselattached at their rear ends to levers G, pivotally mounted in the ends of clips H, said clips being of the following construction. (See Fig. 8.)
A tongue h is designed to rest on the upper face of the semi-elliptic spring I of the 8o wagon, and said tongue passing under the yoke-plate g, which'clamps the semi-elliptic spring in position on the axle J by means of the yokes f. This tongue is preferably made as wide as the springs upon which it rests and 8 5 at its forward end is provided with a down turned projection h on one side and a corresponding projection 7L" on its opposite side parallel to the first-mentionedA projection, which projections 7L and 7i embrace the springs 9o and hold the forward ends of the tongue in position. The projections 72," are extended laterally, as shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8, to afford a support for ears h", in which the levers G are Vpivoted. The iixed ends of the band-brakes K are likewise secured to these lateral projections, which I have marked h" in the drawings, and extend under and around the friction-band secured to the rear Wheel of the Wagon,said band-brake being then secured roo at its upper end to the lever g above its pivotpoint, as shown more clearly in Figs. l and p 3. I prefer to face the band-brakes on their inner faces with leather or other material to enable them to better grasp the friction-band with which they cooperate.
L indicates the rear Wheel of the wagon, which is of ordinary constructionthat is, consists of the usual hub, spokes, rim, rbc.- on which is secured my improved frictionband M. This friction-band, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, consists of a ring having an inturned flange rn, perforated at suitable points for the passage of the parallel members of U-shaped bolts N, which bolts surround the spokes of the wagon and through the medium of nuts on their inner ends tightly bind the ring M in position on the Wheel. The exterior face of ring M forms the friction or braking surface with which cooperates the band-brake K, heretofore described.
In placing the ring lM in position on the wheel the U-shaped or stirrup bolts are introduced from the outside, so as to embrace alternating spokes, their threaded ends passing through openings in the internal flange m of the ring M, after which the nuts ar'e vscrewed 'in position to clamp the parts to- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a braking apparatus, the combination with a Wheel and its axle and springs secured to said axle, of a band attached in position on the spokes of said wheel, a clip secured on said springs and provided with a support for a lever, a band-brake having one end attached to said clip in j uXtaposition to said leversupport, and a lever pivotally mounted in said support, to which lever the other end of said band-brake is connected; substantially as described.
2. rlhe combination with a wheel and its axle, of springs secured to said axle, a ring M, having an inturned ilange secured to the spokes of said wheel by means of stirrupbolts, a clip consisting of a tongue attached to said springs, said clip being also provided with downturned portions h' and h,the latter of which is formed with a lateral projection, a band-brake having one end fixed to said lateral projection, a lever pivotally mounted on said lateral projection, and to which lever the other end of said band-brake is connected; substantially as described.
The herein-described clip for use in connection with band-brakes, the same comprising a tongue h, and parallel projections h and 72,, from the latter of which extends a lateral projection hm', ears or lugs h" mounted upon said lateral projections; substantially as described.
