P. C. SMITH.
STOPPER FOR WASHBASINS 0B BATH TUBSL (Application filed June 16, 1899.)
(No Model.)
In van/tor few CSmzZh, jyoefiwi' PERRY C. SMITH,
OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
STOPPER FOR WASHBASINS OR BATH-TUBS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,011, dated August 1, 1899.
Application filed June 16, 1899. Serial No. 720,784. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERRY 0. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Stoppers for lVash basins orBath-Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stoppers for washbasins and bath-tubs; and the object is to provide a flexible disk to close the outlet, with guides on the two opposite sides of the disk to facilitate the placing and retention of the stopper over the outlet-passage and to permit the reversing or use of both sides of the disk. 7
The object, also, is to provide means whereby the chain which attaches the stopper to washstand or bath-tub will be connected centrally of the guide and disk and removably secured to permit of change in the side of its attachment.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a top or plan view of my invention; Fig. 2, an under side view of same; Fig. 3, a section on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a modified form in which the nut which holds the eyebolt to which the chain is fastened is permanently embedded in the stopper, the View being in vertical section; Fig. 5, a like section of a second modification; Fig. 6, a like section of a modified form in which the eyebolt is permanently secured to the stopper; Fig. 7, a view in section of a modified form embodying features of the construction shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and Fig. 8 a modification in which the eyebolt to which the chain is fastened is held in place by a pin.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
A is the disk of flexible material, preferably rubber, of sufficiently larger diameter than the outlet-passage to be closed to overlap the adjacent surface of the bowl or tub.
B is the guide which extends equally from both sides of the disk with an outward taper and may be of rubber made integrally with the disk, as shown in Fig. 3. Passing diametrically through the guides through a suitable perforation centrally of and at right anthe threaded end of the bolt 0 is screwed.
The enlargements l) are made at both ends of the perforation to enable the nut to be changed from one side of the disk to the other when it is desired to change the side of contact of the disk with the bowl. By placing one side of the disk constantly next to the opening the pressure of the water sags it at the middle, causing the edges to be raised out of contact with the surface around the outlet and injuring the closure. The easiest and most efficient means of correcting this is to change the contact side by turning the disk over occasionally, as above provided for.
To enable the bolt to be clamped securely to the guides, I provide the cap E, which is large enough to overlap the sides around the opening for the nut.
To change the side of contact of the disk, the eyebolt O is screwed out of the nut D and withdrawn. Then the nut D is changed to the enlargement or socket b on the opposite side of the stopper and the eyebolt replaced, but on the side opposite its first position.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the nut f is embedded in the rubber and saves the bother of its removal and change. The eyebolt E is screwed out of the nut and removed from the perforation at one end and reinserttwo guides and the disk are separate pieces which are held together by the bolt.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7 the disk and guides are separate pieces, thelatter having enlargements or sockets as described for the constructionshown in Fig. 3. The eyebolt H is constructed and applied in the same manner as shown in Fig. 3, but the nut his provided with an eye like g of Fig. 5.
In the modification shown in Fig. 6 the bolt I has an eye at each end into which the chainring iwill be inserted and changedfrom one eye to the other according to which side of the disk is to be under. The tWo guides are integral with the disk, and the bolt 1 has the enlargement i intermediate its ends, which is molded in the rubber, as shown. Grooves are cut across the ends of the guides to allow the chain-ring to be introduced to the eye in the bolt.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 a bolt J, with an eye at each end to receive the chain-ring,is retained in its perforation in the integrally-formed disk and guides by the pin j, which enters a suitable transverse perforation under the disk and passes through a suitable opening in the bolt. In this form the guides are notched at their ends, like the form shown in Fig. 6, to admit the ring for the chain.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a stopper for washbasins and bathtubs, a flexible disk larger in diameter than the outlet-passage from the basin or tub, having a tapering guide on each of its sides concentric with and of less diameter than the disk to provide a stopper that can be reversed, substantially as described and'shown.
2. In a stopper for washbasins and bathtubs, a flexible disk larger in diameter than the on tlet-passage from the basin or tub, having a tapering guide on each of its sides concentric with and of less diameter than the disk to provide a stopper that can be reversed, a ring for the attachment of a chain, and means for securing the ring to the stopper at the end of one of said tapering guides and of changing it from the end of one guide to the other, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 6th day of June, A. D. 1899. a
PERRY 0. SMITH. [L. ,S.]
