SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eatent No. 629,729, dated July 25, 1899. Application filed une 19, 1897. Serial No. 641,534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWIL IAM H.TRAPHAGEN, a citizen of the United States,residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a cultivator in which the working depth of the shovels can be determined without attention in setting the lifting-lever in its connection with a toothed segment.
The further object of this invention is to carry the drag-bars in their swinging movements in substantially a horizontal plane.
The further object of this invention is to adjust the drag-bars bodily, so as to widen or lessen the distance between them.
The further object of this invention is to adjust the seat-support in the direction of the length of the implement and in a vertical direction; and the further object of this invention is to adj ust'the carrying-wheels transversely of the implement.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a partial plan view. Fig. 2 is a rear eleva tion of the axle and supporting-wheels. Fig. 3 is a lengthwise section. Fig. 4 is a lengthwise vertical section through the coupling of the drag-bar with the main frame on dotted line a, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the couplings on dotted line b, Fig. 1.

The carrying-wheels 1 are supported upon stub-axles'2, which have an adjustable connection with the main axle 3 transversely of the implement by a bracket 4, having an opening within which is located a collar 5. The upper end of each stub-axle is located in its bracket and the collar set-screwed upon the axle, by which the axle is held when adjusted. To the main axle is secured a frame composed of the lengthwise bars 7 and brace-bars 8, a tongue 9, supported by the frame. on each side of the machine, is secured a bracket composed of the lower plate 10,having a depending boss 11 and located beneath the bars of the frame and held in place by aclamp 12, located on top of the frame, and a bolt 13, passing through the clamp and bracket. A plate 14 is located upon the boss 11, and a nut 15, placed upon the bolt, holds the parts in position. This plate and bracket extend transversely of the machine, the bracket provided with holes 16 and the plate provided with a stud 17, having a central hole. The holes in the bracket and plate coincide. A bolt 18, passing through the bracket and stud of the plate, clamps them together. A drag bar for each side of the machine, composed of the two bars 19, bolted together at their forward ends, supports an upturnedsection 21, connecting a two-part socket 20, which receives the depending stud 17 and is held in position by a washer placed on the bolt 18. By withdrawing the bolt 18 the plate 14 can be turned upon its pivotal connection with the bracket 10 from the inner hole into the outer hole of the bracket, and by passing the bolt through the bracket and plate the drag-bar will be adjusted to set the drag-bars farther apart. A horizontal section ofthis coupling is shown at Fig. 9. The bolt 43 will clamp the socket portion around the stud and take up wear, and the bolt 44 will connect the drag-bar and coupling.
Between the bars forming the drag-bar is secured a bracket 22, having a vertical tubular portion. An arm 23, having ears 24, is secured to the bracket by a bolt 25, passing through the ears and tubular portion. The end of this arm is perforated. To the main frame is secured. a toothed segment 26 and a hand-lever 27, which has a dog capable of engaging the teeth of the segment. To the outer face of each of the lengthwise bars 7, forming a part of the main frame, is secured a bracket 34 by a bolt 35, passing through the ears of the bracket and by means of which the bracket can be adjusted in the lengthwise direction of the bar and clamped in position. The outer face of the bracket is provided with serrations and has a vertical slot 36 and recess 37. A socket 38 has a bolt 39 passing through it, the head of the bolt located in the recess 37 of the bracket 34L, the shank of the bolt extending through the slot 36, receiving a nut on its end projecting through the socket. A bar 40 extends in the lengthwise direction of the machine, one end located in the socket 38 and bolt 3.) passing through it. A seat 41 is supported by the bars 40, which rest upon supports 42, acting as their fulcrums.
By means of the adjustable brackets the seat-support can be adjusted in the lengthwise direction of the machine to locate the driver in proper relation with the drag-bars and lifting-lever, and the socket 38 has a vertical adjustment in connection with the brackets to adjust the seat as to height.
By means of the shield 28 it may be adjusted to cover any number of the notches in the toothed segment, thereby preventing the dog of the lifting-lever from entering them. The lifting-lever is adjusted in connection with the toothed segment to regulate the depth the shovels are to cultivate, and the shield is adjusted to cover the notches of the segment between the dog and projection 43. When it is desired to turn at the end of a row or in transportation from the field, the dog is released from engagement with the toothed segment, and the action of the spring will raise the drag-bar, the projection 44 forming a stop to the dog of the lifting-lever, thereby limiting the raising movement of the dragbar, and by means of the hand-lever the dragbar will be allowed to drop until the dog of the hand-lever enters the notch of the toothed segment at the end of the shield, which will limit the descent of the drag-bar and will return the shovels to the same Working depth, and the shield can be adjusted to cover any number of notches, thereby varying the working depth of the shovels.
By means of the swinging arm 23 and its connection with the drag-bar and main frame the drag-bar can be moved transversely of the machine in substantially a horizontal plane,
as the end of the arm will remain in the same position while the drag-bar is being moved.
When the drag-bar is being raised, the link 45 will engage the axle forming its fulcrum, so that as the spring loses its force it gains leverage, and consequently lifts the drag-bar with uniform exertion on the part of the attendant.
I claim as my invention 1. In a cultivator, the combination of a toothed segment, a lifting-lever'and a shield adjustable to cover one or more of the notches of the segment over which the dog of the lever moves.
2. In a cultivator,the combination of a main frame, a drag-bar, a lever having a pivotal connection with the main frame, an arm having a pivotal connectionwith the drag-bar, its free end extending forward of its pivotal connection and a flexible connection between the free end of the arm and the lever.
3. In a cultivator, the combination of a handlever, an auxiliary lever, a drag-bar, a connection between the levers, a connection between the drag-bar and auxiliary lever independent of the hand-lever, and a spring connected to a stationary support exerting its force upon the drag-bar.
4. In a cultivat0r,the combination of a handlever, an auxiliary lever, a drag-bar, a connection between the levers, a connection between the drag-bar and auxiliary lever independent of the hand-lever, and a spring connection between the auxiliary lever and a stationary support.
5. In a cultivator, the combination of a hand lever, an auxiliary lever, a connection between the levers, a drag-bar and a link-andchain connection between the auxiliary lever and drag-bar.
6. In a cultivator,the combination of a main frame, and a drag-bar connected therewith in a manner to be adjusted transversely of the machine by a plate pivoted to the frame upon a vertical axis to which the drag-bar is connected off the center of the axis.
7. In a cultivator,the combination of a main frame, a bracket secured thereto, a plate having a pivotal connection with the bracket upon a vertical axis and having a depending stud, a two-part socket clamped in position around the stud and a dra -bar having a connection with the socket.
