NON-CLOGGlNG WATER-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent NO. 629,725, dated July 25, 1899, Application filed April 27, 1899. Serial NoI 714,723. (No model.)y
To @ZZ whom it may concern.- rearward corner ,to forni a closure above the Be it known that I, PHILIP K. SHAFFER, reoutlet of the' gate. By preference the slide= siding at Redlands, in the county of San Berway is formed integral with the wing, as nardino and State of Oaliforna, haveinvented shown in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4, inwhich Views 5 a new and useful Non-Clogging Water-Gate, the metal sheet is shown bent at one edge, as 55 of which the following is a specification. at 2', to form one edge groove of the slide The object of this invention is to provide a way, and is bent intermediate its edges, as water-gate for umes which will be free from at l', to form the other edge groove of the any danger of clogging with moss or leaves slideway, and is then bent away from the 1o or any other trash that may be carried along slideway to form the wing or shield E', and 6o by the water. the top edge thereof and rear free corner are My invention relates to gates for side outbent obliquely and toward the slideway to lets from a iiume or pipe; and it consists in form a cover over the space between the wing a rearwardly-flaring wing extending from the and slideway.
r 5 front of the gate and having a top extension In practice the slideway-plate C of Fig..5 65
to form a closure above the outlet of the gate. or C of Fig. l, as the case may be, is fastened l The invention can be applied in the origito the flume-wall A by the tacks c, and in nal construction of the gate and can also be case of the form shown in Fig. 5 the Wing E applied as an attachment to gates already in is then fastened to thewall by tacks d, so
zo use. that the edge of the bentl portion e will be 7o My invention includes the parts and'comagainst the face of the slide D when the same binations hereinafter described and claimed. is in place.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my I have provided a combined slideway and invention in two modes of its application. shield, as illustrated in Figs. l, 2, 3, and 4,
25 Figure l is a perspective view of my imin which the metal sheet of which the slidc- 75 proved water-gate in the side of a flume, a way andthe shield or guard are formed is bent fragment of which is shown. Fig. 2 is a plan firstwto form one groove 2 of the slideway at section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 4. Fig. one edge of the sheet. The sheet is then bent 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 4. Fig. 4 is a intermediate its edges, as at l', to form the 3o vertical section on line indicated by 44, Fig. other groove of the slideway, and is then bent 8c 2. Fig. 5 is a View of a form in which the wing flaringly, as at E', to project rearward from is an attachment made separate fromthe slidethe front edge, beyond the water-outlet, and frame and adapted to be appliedto flumethe upper free cornerthen is bent diagonally, gates alreadyin use. Fig. .6 isa section on line as at e", to bring the upper edge into the path I 35 6 6, Fig. 5, the slide being removed. of or against the slide when the same is in- 85 A indicates the side of the fiume, which is serted in the slideway. If the edge is bent to provided with a water-outlet B. stand normally in the path of the slide, it will C indicates the slideway, which is preferbe sprung away from the slideway when necably made of sheet metal nailed to the flume essary to admit the slide.
4o with tacks c. In the drawings two forms of 3 indicates holes through the wing E' to al- 9o slideway are shown. In Figs. 5 and 6 the low tacks c to be driven through the plate to slideway C is made of a sheet of metal bent secure the front edge of the slideway to the at its edges, as at l 2, to form the grooves of flume-wall. The sheet forming the slideway the slideway, and the slide D is fitted in the is perforated between the bends, as at B, to
45 slideway. This is a common construction form the water-outlet over which the gate 95 and no claim is made thereto. slides.
vE indicates a sheet-metal wing fastened at In practical operation the water iiowing the forward edge of they gate and bent to flare down the flume will be deflected away from rearward therefrom into the Hume and bent the water-outlet B, and the trash and other 5o obliquely, as at e, at the upper free edge and material will beprevented from entering the roo outlet. The top pieces e and e prevent the debris from falling down between the wing and the slideway.
In Figs. l and 5 large arrows show the direction in which the Water ows.
The Water behind the outlet will be oomparatively still, and the Water Will flow to the outlet B free from anything that can clog the outlet.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi l. A Water-gate for the side of a fiume provided with a rearwardly-flaring Wing with a top extension to form a closure above the outlet of the gate.
2. The combination with a fiume-side gate, of a sheet-metal shield fastened to the gateway at the front edge thereof and bent to iare rearwardly therefrom and bent obliquely at the upper free corner to form a closure above the outlet of the gate. Y
In a Water-gate, a combined slideway and shield composed of a met-a1 sheet bent at one edge to form one groove of the slideway and bent intermediate its edges to form the other groove of the slideway, and perforated between such bends to form the Water-outlet, suoh sheet being bent Haring from the slide- Way rearward of the intermediate bend to form a shield for the Water-outlet and bent diagonally at the top to form a closure above the Water-outlet.
4. A combined slideway and shield for a Water-gate comprising a metal sheet bent at one edge to form one groove of a slideway and having an intermediate bend to form the other groove of the slideway and perforated between the bends with a hole for the wateroutlet and with other holes for nails or other fasteners, the sheet beyond the intermediate bend being bent, flaring from the slideway rearwardly and bent diagonally at its top to form a closure above the Water-outlet and being perforated near the intermediate bend in line with the holes for the fasteners on that side of the slideway.
