SAMUEL O. JONES, OF STI'LLWATER, MINNESOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE H. ATWOOD, OF SAME PLACE.
LUBRlCA-TINGDEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 629,369, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed May 9, 1898. Serial No. 680,099. (No'modeld specification.
My invention relates to improvements in lubricating devices, and has for its object the providing of a lubricant-chamber operated by a source of steam or other means to deliver to a partto be lubricated predetermined quantitles of lubricant.
To this end my invention consists of'a lubricator-receptacle arranged adjacent to the part to be lubricated and a measuring-chamber adapted to be carried by pressure of steam or other means into position to receive a measore of lubricant from said receptacle and to carry the same to the part to be lubricated.
My invention further consists in the pare ticular arrangement and construction of said parts.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is: a partial section .of a steam-cylinder, showing my,
invention arranged in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my lubricator. Fig. 3 is a section on line a: w of Fig, 2, looking toward the bottom of the lubricator; and Fig. i is a modified construction-ofthe main piston.
In the drawings I show one application of my invention, in which A represents a steamcylinder, within which works the piston 2, provided with the ordinary piston-rod 3. Secured in the opening 4: in the steam-cylinder A is my improved lubricator. This consists of the cylinder-sections 5 and 6, the lower sec-v tion being slidably arranged within the upper cylinder-section and having a screw-threaded downwardly-extending portion 7, adapted to be threaded in the steam-cylinder, as shown. Said sections are adj ustably connected by means of the clamp G,which consists of rings 8 and 9, solidly connected by handles 10, said rings being screw-threaded upon the cylin der-sectionsL The lower ring 8 is split, as shown in Fig. 1, and connected by a bolt 11, by means of which the ring may be tightly secured in place when the parts have been adjusted to proper positions.

against the flange 31 upon Arranged between the cylinder-sections 5 and 6 are packing-rings 12 for the purpose of preventing any leakage of oil through the joint between the To further close said joint, I pro vide the ring 13, threaded upon the lower end of the cylinder-section 6 and bearing against thev section 5, and arrange between said ring and sections packing-rings 14. j
Arranged in the chamber 15, centrally cored out of the'cylinder-seotions 5 and 6, is the piston D, having an enlarged lower end 16, adapted to abut against the flange '17 upon the upper end of the cylinder-section 5, as
2, to limit the upward move- Suitablepacking 18 is arranged in a groove in the periphery of said The upper portion of said piston D is centrally cored out, forming a chamber 19, which holds the quantity of lubricant to be delivered and in which chamber is arranged a piston 20,which adjusts the capacity be seen by refer- I of said chamber. As will ring to Fig. 2, the upper end'of the piston D is screw-threaded upon the pipe 21, which pipe extends through the adjusting-screw 22,
"threaded in the plate 23, secured to the top of the' upwardly-projecting portion 24 of the cylinder-section 6 and held in set position by A coil-spring 26 is arranged between the adjusting-screw 22 and the main piston D, so that by the adjusting 'of said screw the tension of the spring may be varied as may be necessary to secure the proper force of the main pistons Secured in the upper end of the pipe 21 is a plug 27, held in set position by a lock-nut 28 and within which is screw-threaded the rod 29 of the measuring-piston 20.
30 represents the lubricator-reservoir, which is secured in place in the manner shown in Fig.1, the bottomv of the reservoir being formed with an opening through which may be passed the cylinder-sections, the edge of the metal adjacent to the opening being held the top of the cylinder-section 6 by means of theclamp O. The reservoir is closed by a suitable cover 32, as shown. The lubricant passes tojthe interior of the chamber 19 by means of the openings 33 through the upwardly-proj ecting portion of the upper cylinder-section and the openings 34 through the Wall of said chamber. The space below the piston 20 will be filled by the lubricant, so that the height of the piston will determine the quantity of lubricant which may be held bythe chamber. A conduit 35 connects the upper end of the mainpiston chamber 15 with the part to be lubricated.
The operation of my improved lubricator is as follows: The lubricator is properly secured to the steam-cylinder or other part, as shown in Fig. 1. As the piston 2 travels from the lubricator the live steam entering the cylinder will enter the chamber 15 of thelubricator, raising the main piston D to the position shown in Fig. 2. The lubricant will then pass through the openings 33 and 34 to the interior of the measuring-chamber 19. As the steam-pressu re falls in the opposite travel of the piston in the steam-cylinder the spring 26 will force the piston D of the lubricator to lowered position. This will bring the openings 34 of the measuring-chamber below the flange 17 at the upper end of the main-piston chamber 15. Since the portion of the piston D above the head 16 is of smaller diameter than the chamber 15, there would be a surrounding space when said piston is in lowered position, into which space the lubricant from the chamber 19 will run by gravity. The next movement of the piston in the steamcylinder will raise the piston D of the lubricator, and as the openings 34 are carried above the inwardly-projecting flange 17 the continued upward movement of the piston will force the lubricant through the conduit to the part to be lubricated. The above described operation of the parts is kept up as long as there is any travel of the piston in the steam-cylinder.
From the foregoing description it will be evident that the parts can be set to measure and deliver any desired quantity of lubricant, and that after being set the operation is automatically maintained by the steampressure Without any attention to the lubricator being necessary until the reservoir has been emptied of its contents.
While I show the parts operated by steam, it will be evident that other means may be used for operating the .same. It also is possible to use with my device solid lubricants, since the steam will so heat up the parts that the solid lubricant will be melted and carried to the parts to be lubricated in liquid condition.
In Fig. 4 I show a modified form of piston. A piston of this construction is intended to be used in order to adapt the lubricator to deliver lubricant either through the conduit 35 or the opening 4 in the steam-cylinder. When itis desired to deliver the lubricant through the opening 4, the conduit 35 is plugged up and the plug removed from the opening 37 in the piston D. The lubricant will then pass through said opening as the piston D is raised and through the openi'ng4 in the steam-cylinder.
I claim- 1. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a lubricant-reservoir, and a part to be lubricated, of a chambered piston arranged intermediate of said reservoir and steam under pressure, and adapted to be carried by said steam into position to receive a measure of lubricant from said reservoir, means for carrying said piston into position to permit the containedlubricant to pass to a second chamber, said piston being actuated by the steam under pressure to force the lubricant from the second chamber through suitable conduits to the part to be lubricated.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a lubricant-reservoir and the part to be lubricated, of a device arranged intermediate of said reservoir and steam under pressure, a controlling-spring for said device, said device being actuated by steam under pressure against the tension of said spring to receive a supply of lubricant, and to be similarly actuated against the ten sion of said spring to force said supply through suitable conduits to the part to be lubricated. g
3. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the lubricant-reservoir, and the part to be lubricated, of the chambered piston arranged intermediate of said reservoir and steam under pressure, and adapted to be carried by said steam into position to receive a predetermined quantity of lubricant from said reservoir, the means for adjusting the size of said chamber, and the means for carrying said piston into position to deliver the contents of said chamber to said conduit upon the decrease of the steampressure. r
4. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the lubricant-reservoir and the part to be lubricated, of a piston provided with a chamber, means for adjusting the size of said chamber, and means for actuating said piston to bring said chamber into communication with the contents of said reservoir, and thereafter into position to deliver its contents to the part to be lubricated.
5. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with the lubricant-reservoir and the part to be lubricated, of a piston provided with a chamber, a second piston ad justably arranged in said chamber for varying the capacity thereof, and means for actuating said first piston to bring said chamber into communication with the contents of said reservoir, and thereafter into position to deliver its contents to the part to be lubricated.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
