CHARLES A. GLOEKLER, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKE- HOUSE.
SPECIFICATION forming* part of Letters :Patent No, 629,351, dated J' uly 25, V1899. A Application filed February 23, 1899. Serial No. 706,516. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. GLoEK-- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Houses, of which the following is a speciication.v Y
. My invention relates to houses' for smoking butchers products, and has for one of its objects to provide a smoke-house embodying a knockdown casing and a rotary support for the products to be smoked readily detachable 'from its base an-d also from the knockdown casing. f
Anotherl object of the invention is to provide a smoke-house embracing a rotatable -support for the products to be smoked and means for imparting an intermittent rotary Ymotion to said support while the smoke-house` is in use, whereby all of the products in the house are subjected to the action of the same.
or'substantially the same amount of smoke,
and uniformity in the color of 'the products is insured. Q
With the foregoing ends in view the invention-will be fully understood from the followling description andclaims when t-akenin conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in
zontal section taken on the line 3 'of Fig. 2.
' oetagonal form in cross-section.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the support for-the products to be smoked, the same beingshown as removed from the house.
In the said drawings similar letters desigf' nate corresponding parts in all of the several views.
The casing A of `my improved is preferably built of sheet metal smoke-house and is of It is made up of a top wall or roof a of octagonal form, two side sections b, havingflanges c at one vertical edge, two side sections d, having iianges c at their opposite vertical edges, flat side sections e e', interposed between the two sections d and between the sections d b, re-
spectively, and detachably connected by bolts f to the flanges of the same and a side section g, which is connected by hinges to one seciron base 7,
i tion b, so'as to serve as a door, and'is preferably provided with a latch h, designed to engage a keeper i lon the other section b. At
their lower ends the side sections b d e e are detachably connected by bolts f' to the vertically-disposed portion of an octagonal angleand at their upperA ends said side sections are detachably connected by bolts f2 to the vertically-disposed portion of an octagonal angle-irona, which in turn is permanently connected to the top wall or roof a. By reason of the construction described when itis desired to ship the smoke-house from one point to another the side sections b d e e of the casing A may be readily disconnected from each other and from the base-iron j and the top or roof ct by simply removing the connecting-bolts f, f', and f2, and may be conveniently packed, so as to take up but a minimum amount of room in shipment. It also follows from the construction described that when the parts ofthe casing A arrive at the point where the smoke-house is to be located said casing parts may be connected together quite as readily as they were disconnected.
In the door-section g of the casing A, at a point adjacent tothe lower `end thereof, are formed ajsuiiicient Vnumber of draft-openings Vg to support combustion of the smoke-making fuel in the casing, and in the top wall a of said casing and preferably at an opposite pointV with respect to the openings g is a smoke-eduction aperture o1. Arranged on the ground or other support on which the casing A rests and located in the center of said casing is a pedestal B. This pedestal is provided `in its upper end with a bearing Z, in which is journaled the lower trunnion fm, of the support C forsthe products to be smoked, the upper trunnion 'n of which extends through and is journaled in the top a of the casing and a reinforcing-plate p thereon. The support is preferably in the form of a reel and comprises aflower head q, an upper head r, angle-iron uprights s, connecting the lower and upper heads, and angle-iron bars t, connecting the uprights at either side of the reel and having outwardly-directed lateral arms u. The an.
ner shown in Fig. 4, and the lateral arms u,
IOO
2 ceai of said bars t are also designed to support sausages and other products.
As best shown in Fig. 2, the trunnion n of the reel or product-support C extends above the roof of the casing A, where it is provided with a wheel D, bearing upwardly-directed teeth o. These teeth of the wheel D are designed to be engaged by the tappet w of a Wheel E, which ris fixed on a shaft F, journaled in suitable bearings on the casing A, and hence it will be seen that when the smokehouse is in use and the shaft F is rotated an intermittent rotary motion will be imparted to the reel or product-supportv (3e-that is to say, said reel or support will be caused to makev a portion of a revolution incident to each complete revolution of the wheel E and shaftF. By virtue of this the products to be smoked are vleft in one position but a short time, and; consequently all the products will be smoked to the same extent and all will be ofthe-same color. This is also true-when the fire is built adjacent to the door g or at one side of the smokehouse, for it will be observed that all of the products will be presented tosuch side in succession.
The'inte-rrnittent rotation of the reel or product-support C is alsoV advantageous, because it enables an operator standing a-t the dooropeningy of the casing and without said casing toremove all of the smoked products from the reel or support and charge said reel or` support with fresh products while the smoke-house is in operation. This discharging and charging of the reel or support C is also materially facilitated by the use of the bars of wood or other material which rest on the angle-bars t, since said Wood barsv with their loads of sausages. or other products may be very readily placed on and removed from the reel or support C.
For the purpose of permittinga ready disconnection of the easing A from the reel or product-support C, when the casing is to be knocked downv for shipment they upper trunnion n of the,v reel is4 not connected to the upper head r of the reel, but is simply keyed in said head after the manner shown in Fig. 2. Fromthis it follows that not only may the casing be readily disconnected .from the reel when the casing is to be knocked down, but
said casing may be as readily connected to the reel When its parts are again assembled and connected together.
I prefer to employ the angle-iron base j at the lower end of the casing A, since it lends strength and stability to said casing. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to the use of the base j, as the casing is complete without the same. I also do notv desire to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of the parts asherein shown and described, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what -I clai in is-F l. In a smoke-house, the combination of a casing having a door in its side Walland also having an inlet for air and an outlet for smoke located at opposite points, a rotary support arranged in the casing and havinga trvunnion journaled in the top thereof, a shaft journaled in bearings on the casing and adapted to be continuously rotated by a suitable motor, and intermittent gearing between said shaft and the trunnion of the product-support for partially rotatingthe support. incident to each rotation of the shaft, subs-tantially as specified.
2. In a smoke-house, the combinationI of a knockdown casing having a door, a pedestal loosely arranged in said casing, al rotaryproduct-support havingl a trunnion journaled in and removable from the pedestal, a trunnion keyed in and removable from the upper end of said support, and journaled in the topof the casing, the wheel D fixed on the latter trunnion above the casing and having teeth '0, and the shaft journaled i-n bearingsV on the nesses.
