Description
UNITED STATES PATENTV OFFICE.
HERBERT H. PATTEE, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED CO'UCH AND CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of `Letters Patent No. 629,204, dated July 18, 1899.v
Applicants nea August 23,1398. senin No. esasia. (No man.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. PATTEE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Couch and Chair, of which the following is a specification. My invention relates to a new and useful improvementiu combined couches and chairs, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective combination of this description by which a chair is produced the backof which maybe set at various angles for the accommodation of the user and which maybe converted into a couch by simply unfolding the upper portion Yof the chair in one directionand swinging the back downward in the opposite direction, using the adjustingrod for holding the legs or posts in position, which support the outer end of theback when thus adjusted, and providing means in the shape of rods for adjusting the head portion of the couch at various angles.
With these ends inview this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elementsV hereinafter set forth and then specically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to whichthis invention appertains Vmay underl stand how to make and use the same, the conlegs B, and hinged to thesection A is the seca struction and operation will now be described l in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forrning a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a perspective of my improved combination when adj usted foruse as a couch; Fig. 2, a side'view of the same when adjusted for use as a chair; Fig. 3, a section of Fig. 2, Fig. 4, an enlarged section of a portion of a couch, showing the means of holding the vsupportinglegsin position; and Fig. 5, a detail perspective of a socket-.bracket for the reception of the stay-rod. y
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the main portion of the combined chair and couch supported bythe tion C, which contains the bottom of the chair and the arms D, said armsl extending rear- Ward beyond this section and having notches E formed therein for the reception of the stayrodF, which latter when placed Within said notches serves to hold the back G'inadj ustment, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the back being-hinged at H to the section A.
The section C is hinged at I tothe section A and is adapted to swing forward and down- -Ward to the position shown Ain Fig. 1, and
when in this position forms the head portion of the couch, the top of section A forming the central portion of the couch, While the back G when swung downward forms the remainder of the couch. The back` has a Wire section .I secured thereon, which serves as a rest for the head when the chair is being used or for the feet When the couch is being used, it being understood that-'suitable cushions or coverings may be spread over the surface,so as to render it comfortable to the user.
A pair of legs or posts K are hinged at L to the upper portion of the back, and when the device is used as a chair these posts swing into alinement with the sides of the back immediately in the rear of the Wire section J and are thus out of the Way; but when the device is adjusted for use as a couch these posts are swungoutward at right angles to the back and are secured in this position by the stayrod F, the ends of which are provided with date the rod, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The section C When swung open, as shown in Fig. l, is supported at its outer end by the rodsP, said rods passingthrough the brackets Q, in which are threaded the set-screws R, whereby these rods may be secured in various adjustments, thus determining the augle'at which this section will stand to the body of the couch, and thus permitting the adjustment of the head to suit the user. The section A has a receptacle Sformed therein upon which a cover Tis hinged, and this receptacle may be used for storing the cushions and the like which are used upon the conch when the device kis used* as a 'chair or upon the chair when the device is used as a couch, by which means a compact combined chair and couch is' had which is easily convertible from one to the other and adapted for storing those IOO vIC).
as a chair, the section C is held against being swung open by the hooks U, but one of which is shown in the drawings, and the rods P are adjusted so as to be out of the Way, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
I am aware that chairs and couches have been combined, and I do not Wish to broadly lay claim to the same; but
What I do claim as new and useful is- 1. In combination, a main section, a section hinged thereto having notched arms, a back hinged to the main section legs pivoted to the back, a stay-bar connecting the legs, brackets having sockets arranged on the back and staybar of the legs, the sockets having slots in the front Walls, a rod having balls at each end to engage the socket, said rod being also adapted to engage the notches of the arms, substantially as described.
2. A combined chair and couch consisting of a main section having suitable legs for its support, a stay-bar connecting the legs a receptacle formed in said section, a cover so hinged as to close said receptacle, a back hinged to the main section, Woven Wire secured to a portion of the back, a pair of posts hinged to the back, brackets having sockets Ywith open slots in their front Walls arranged on the back and stay-bar of the legs respectively, a stay-rod carrying balls adapted to fit Within said sockets for holding the. posts at right angles to the back, a section. C hinged to the main section, arms carried by the section C, said arms having extensions in which are formed notches for the reception of the stay-'rod to adjust and to .hold the back in position When used as a chair, brackets Q carried by the section O, rods fitted to slide in said brackets, and set-screws for holding said rods in any adjustment, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto at'- iixed mysignature in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
HERBERT H. PATTEE.
