UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JorIANN- HOFBAUER, or VI NNA, AUSTRIA-HUNGARY.
MEANS-FOR SECURING TOOLSTQTHEIR HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 629,128, dated. July 18, 1899. Application filed December 26, 1898. finial No. 699,838. lhlo modeh) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHANN HOFBAUER, locksmith, a citizen of the Empire of Austrial-Iungary, residing at Vienna, in the Empire of Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Securing Tools to Their Handles, specially applicable for scythes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description This invention relates to'improvements in that type of means for securing tools laterally to their handles, specially scythes, in which a ring and a wedge or taper key are employed, the object being to so form and com.- bine the said wedge or key with the said ring that the wedge or key when loose can never leave the ring, and thus is not liable to he lost; and in order that my invention may be more fully understood I have caused to be appended hereunto one sheet of drawings, marked with letters of reference indicating like parts in both views,
Figure 1 shows a scythe secured to its handle by my improved means, and Fig. 2 the said means separately on an enlarged scale.
. In carrying out my invention, and referring to the figures generally, I form the wedge or key a longitudinally with a slot a, closed on all sides and adapted to receive the ring Z) and permit the wedge or key to slide on the ring b. The tool c'is secured to its handle d in the usual manner, as shown in Fig. 1, and the wedge or key a being prevented from leaving the ring b is therefore notliable to be lost when loose, but will allow of being adjusted.
Having now particularly described and as-- certained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I' declare that what I claim is- 1. A means for securing tools such as described to their handles, comprising a wedge or taper key, a, having a longitudinal slot, a, and a ring I) passing through said slot.
2. A means for securing tools such as described to their handles, comprising a wedge or taper key at having a longitudinal slot 0; closed on all sides, and a ringb passing through said slot, the latter being of a length to per' mit the key to slide longitudinally on the ring, as described.
In witness'whereof Ihave hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
J OHANN I-IOFBAUER.
