To @ZZ 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR KARAVODINE, engineer, a subject of the Emperor of Russia, residing at Place de la Rpublique Hotel Moderne, Paris, France, have invented a certain new and useful Boiler with Interior Furnace, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of that class of apparatus for generating fluid for motive power or other uses in which a furnace is inclosed in aboiler or reservoir.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is 4a central vertical section of the apparatus,
and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bottom of the furnace.
A is a boiler, shell, or reservoir of the desired capacity,w'hich surrou nds the refractory body or chamber. b of the furnace, there being a thin annular space between parts A and ZJ. i
CZ is an inlet for air under pressure, which when admitted surrounds the body h. Arrows l indicate the passage of part of the air to the bottom of the apparatus and to the ashpit below the rotary gratebars ff, whence it The products of combustion pass, as indicated by arrows 2, through a passage or canal D into superposed compartment E of the furnace.
e is a plate just above the opening into chamber E of said passage and serves to prevent ashes carried up by the draft and collecting in chamber F. falling into the passage.
F is an outlet for generated fluid and may serve also as a waterinlet.
The grate-bars have meshing gear-wheels g, and one of the bars has an extended end K, which extends vout so that it can be turned from the outside. Arrows 3 indicate the directions in which the bars turn. The bars f have alternating projections l, which when the bars are turned break up any pieces of slag resting on them and work them and ashes down through the grate and into cock M and ash-outlet pipe N. Extending between projections l, on the outer sides, are lugs-z', which clear the bars of pieces of slag adhering thereto. Cock M is of very hard metal, so that when turned it will break slag without injury to itself, and has a large opening 4, by which communication is had with pipe N.
P Q are longitudinal and circumferential packings in suitable grooves in the valve-casing to insure air-tight closure of the valve when it is turned. The packing material is pulverulent or fibrous in its nature and is becomes mixed with the carbonio-acid gasv produced by the carbonio oXid rising from the combustion-chamber and non-'consumed air introduced into the chamber E through passage D. This gaseous mixture of carbonicacid gas and steam constitutes the motive fluid generated by my apparatus.
Means are provided for introducing solid fuel into the furnace while air is being introduced at d, consisting of a horizontal tube or coal-distributer R, the outer end of which is closed by a cap or obturator X, which can be supported byascrew-plug 5 with a handle 6, carried by a yoke pivoted at 7.
n is a plate carried by a screw m, passing through plug 5 for forcing fuel from the tube into the furnace.
S is a cap or obturator secured to rod U, which extends through a hollow screw @,Which passes through a suitable packing or grease box. By turning screw a the cap is moved over the end of tube R, after which rod U can be turned, thereby turning the cap on tube R, crushing any particles oi' dust that may be thereon and forming close contact with the outwardly-beveled bearing Z a little back from the end of the tube. B is a similarbearing at the opposite end of the tube.
r is a normally-closed valve in communication with tube R, and V is a similar valve in a pipe connecting the interior of the furnace with tube R.
`When the furnace is in use and it is desired to introduce fuel, the inner end of the tube is covered by its cap, valve r is opened to allow escape of pressure from the tube, cap X IOO is withdrawn, and the pivoted yoke swung back. The tube is filled and cap X is replaced. Then valveV is opened to equalize pressure in the combustion-chamber' and in tube R, after which cap S is withdrawn and screw m advanced to push the fuel from the tube.
L is a cover to an opening above the gratebars.
The apparatus is simple and easy to operate and also an eicective generator of motive gas.
I claiml. In a generator of mixed gases and steam, the combination of a shell A, a chamber b of fireproof material within the shell and divided into two superposed compartments, a canal D between the compartments, a grate with rotary bars ffprovided with projections Z Z Zin the lower compartment, an ash-pit, a conduit N below the ash-pit, a valve Min the conduit, a coal-distributer at the upper part of the lower compartment and consisting of a pipe R, caps S and X mounted so as t-o close and open the ends of pipe R, an air-inlet pipe (Zin communication with the space between shell A and chamber Z), and an exit-conduit I? communicating with the upper compartment,sub stantially as described and for the purposes specified.
2. In a generator of mixed gases and steam, the combination of a shell A, a chamber Z) of fireproof material within the shell and divided into two superpose'd compartments, a canal D between the compartments, a grate with rotary bars ff provided with projectionsZ Z Zin the lower compartment, an ash-pit, a conduit N below the ash-pit, a valve M in the conduit, a coal-distributer at the upper part of the lower compartment and consisting of a pipe R, caps S and X. mounted so as to close and open the ends of pipe R, a pipe, and valve V between pipe R and the inner chamber, whereby pressure may be eqnalized, an airinlet pipe CZ in communication with the space between shell A and chamberb, and an exitconduit F communicating with the upper compartment, substantially as described and for the purposes specilied.
3. In a generator of mixed gases and steam, the combination of a shell A, a chamber Z) of ireproof material within the shell and divided into two superposed compartments, a canal D between the compartments, a grate with rotary bars ff provided with projections Z Z Z in the lower compartment, an ash-pit, a conduit N below the ash-pit, a valve M in the conduit, a coal-distributer at the upper part of the lower compartment and consisting of a pipe R, caps S and X mounted so as to close and open the ends of pipe R, and outlet-pipe and valve fr for pipe R, an air-inlet pipe CZ in communication with the space between shell A and chamber b, and an exit-conduit E communicating with the upper compartment, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.

In a generator of the character described the combination ofa shell A, a iireproof chamber b therein, and separated therefrom by an intervening space, a chamber E above chamber b and also surrounded by a space, a passage between chambers b and E and an inaccessible grate at the bottom of chamber b, said grate having bars geared together and rotatable from the out-side.
5. In agenerator of the character described the combination of asliell'A, aiireproof chamber Z), therein and separated therefrom by an intervening space, a conduit N leading from the ash-pit at the bottom of said shell below the grate, anda valve M between the ash-pit and the conduit N for the discharge of slag, said valve having a casing provided with grooves filled with a packing material such as described.
6,. In a generator of the character described, the combination ofthe ash-pit, the dischargeconduit N, and a valve M interposed between the ash-pit and the conduit N for the discharge oi? slag, the casing of the said valve having grooves filled with a pulverulent or fibrous material, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
7. In agenerator of the character described the combination of a combustion-chamber, fuel-introducing` pipe R, a valve r for escape of pressure from pipe R, caps S and X, screws to which said caps are connected, whereby the caps can be moved to and from said pipe, the edges of the caps being beveled, seats of corresponding shape on pipe R back from the ends thereof against which the caps bear when closing the pipe.
