EMU"!!! UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN C. KATTELL, OF PASSAIG, NEW JERSEY.
RECORD-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,333, dated July 4, 1899. Application filed February 6, 1399. Serial No. 704,689. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN C. KATTELL, of Passaic, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Record-Holder, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in holders or packing-cases for phonographic or other talking-machine records; and the obj cot is to providea holder so constructed that the record will be protected from damage by abrasion during transportation, storage, or while removing it for use, and, further, to so arrange the holder that the danger of breaking a record by striking the end of the holder against a hard substance will be practically prevented.
I will describe a record-holder embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in'the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a partial elevation and partial section of a record-holder embodying my invention. Fig. 2'is alongitudinalsection thereof, showing a record in place; and Fig. 3 is a section showing a record as about to be removed.
The holder comprises a casing 1, having a removable cover 2. These parts may be made of any suitable materialsuoh, for instance, as strawboard or the like.
Extended longitudinallywithin the casing is a tubular mandrel 3, consisting of strawboard or similar material, and this mandrel is tapered to correspond to the interior taper of a record 4:, and at its upper end it has opposite openings 5, through which a persons fingers may be passed to engage with the interior surface of a record to lift or draw, the same from the casing. This mandrel 3 is at tached to the bottom 6 of the casing, and said bottom is arranged inward of the end of the casing, so that it forms a cushion upon which the end of the record may rest, and which will prevent the contact of said bottom with any hard substance against which the holder might be forcibly struck, and thus the record will be prevented from accidental breaking by such striking.
The top portion 7 of the cover 2 is also arranged inward of the end of the cover to e11- gage upon the upper end of the record to serve as a cushion for the purpose before described. It will be seen that the mandrel 3 is of a length greater than that of the casing 1that is, the upper end of the mandrel proj ects above the end of the casing 1 and through an opening in the top 7 of the cover. The wall of this opening is designed to engage closely against the mandrel to'hold it from any possible lateral movement. The object in extending the mandrel above the end of the casing is to form a guide to prevent the outer surface of the record from engaging against the interior of the casing while removing the same, as such contact might destroy or deface the record.
When the holder is used for mailing purposes or transmitting records through the mails, it will be well to provide a cushion 8, of canton flannel or similar soft yielding material, on the outer side of the mandrel. By making the mandrel tubular and open at its top it not only makes a very light construction, but it provides a holder fora card upon which the title of the record may be placed.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent I 1. A record-holder,comprising a casing having a cover, a mandrel secured to the bottom of the casing, the said mandrel having a length greater than that of the casing, and a top for the cover provided with an opening through which the end of the mandrel may pass, substantially as specified.
2. A record-holder, comprisinga casing and a cover therefor, a yielding bottom for the casing and arranged inward from the end thereof, a yielding top for the cover and arranged inward from the end thereof and having an opening, a tubular mandrel secured to the bottom of the casing and adapted to pass through the opening in the top of the cover, and a cover of yielding material on the mandrel, substantially as specified.
