SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,081, dated July 4, 1899. Application filed March 3,1899. Serial No. 707,642. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beitknown thatl, EMIL EINFELDT, of Davenport, county of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Riveting-Maohines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to a rivetingmachine designed more particularly for riveting the ends of metallic wheel-spokes to the to rim; and the invention consists in various improvements directed more particularly to the spoke-clamping mechanism, the mechanism for controlling the action of the same, and the mechanism for controlling the operation :5 of the machine.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal longitudinal sectional plan view on the line a a of Fig. 1,
showing the clamping mechanism for acting on the spoke. Fig. 3-is a vertical longitudinal sectional elevation showing the pressurefinger for acting on the rim of the wheel. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section through z5'the heading-tool, the pressure-finger, and spoke-clamp, showing how the pressure-finger holds the rim down and the action of the heading-toolon the end of the spoke.
Referring to the drawings,',l represents 0 the frame of the machine, of suitable-form and material, adapted to give support to the operative parts hereinafter described. It is formed with an overhanging arm 2, in which is mounted a Vertically-reciprocating rotary 5' heading-tool 3, beneath which is situated a spoke-clamp 4:, adapted to clamp and hold the spoke with its upper end in position to be acted on and headed by the heading-tool.- The heading-tool is carried loosely in a ver- 40 tical slide 5, Fig. 1, mounted in a casing 6,
sustained by the overhanging arm, and reciprocated vertically by a crank-pin 7 on the end of .a horizontal driving-shaft 8, mounted in bearings in the upper part of the frame 5 and driven by a pulley 9, adapted to be connected to the shaft by a clutch 10, as more fully described hereinafter. The tool is rotated by means of a worm-wheel 11, splined thereto and engaged bya worm 12 on ashaft 5o 13, situated above the driving-shaft and rotated therefrom by a driving-band 1&. As a resultof this construction and arrangement the rotation of the driving-shaft will impart to the heading-tool simultaneously a vertical reciprocation and a rotary motion, as usual in machines of thischaracter.
The spoke-clamp comprises two horizontal jaws 15, formedwith verticalextensions 16 above and below the jaws, which extensions are provided with trunnions 17, seated in hearings in the frame and forming vertical axes, on which the jaws rock. The rear ends of the jaws are jointed by means of links 18 to a horizontal rod 19, the connection constituting a toggle-lever adapted-by the movement of the rod to separate'or draw together the rear ends of the jaws, and thereby open or close their forward clamping ends. At its 'rear end the rod 19 has fixed to it a piston 20, working in a cylinder 21, sustained by the frame, and at its forward end the rod slides in a bearing 22, formed in the rear end of a casing 23, situated between the jaws of the clamp. The piston is moved forward to operate the toggle and close the clamp by the admission of air or other fluid under pressure to the cylinder behind the piston,through an opening 24 therein, by means of a valve 25, mounted in a casing 26, fixed to the end of the-cylinder. an opening 27, connected withany suitable source of pressure, and with an exit-opening 2S,communicating with the atmosphere. The valve is provided with a port 29 of such form that when the valve is in the position shown in 8 5 Fig. 6 a communication between the interior of the cylinder and source of pressure is established, and when the Valveis turned to the position indicated bydot-ted lines in said figure the communication with the source of pressure is out 01f and the interior of the cylinder is open to the atmosphere to permit the exhaust of the fluid when the piston is retracted.
In order to provide for the retraction of the piston to open the spoke clamp when the valve is operated to shut off thecommunication with the source of pressure, I apply to the end of the rod 19 within the casing 23 a spiral spring 30, having its inner end bearing on a shoulder 31 on the rod and its outer end The casing is provided with 80 seated in a socket 322 in the casing and bearing on a washer 33, acted on by an adjusting-screw 34 for varying its tension. When the rod is moved forward, this spring is compressed and in expanding positively moves the rod rearward toits normal position, thereby opening the spoke clamp. \Vhile this spring has been found desirable to positively retract the rod to open the clamp in cases where the clamp is arranged in a horizontal position, it will not be necessary in the event of the clamp being disposed vertically, in which case the weight of the piston and rod and jaws will act by gravity to open the clamp.

The pressure-finger is operated to act on the rim by the forward movement of the rod 19, which has fixed to it a head 38, formed with aforward-inclined face adapted to engage and ride beneath a friction-roller 39 011 the rear end of the lever and thereby raise the rear end and depress the forward end carrying the finger.
The valve controlling the admission of the fluid under pressure to the cylinder is operated by a foot-lever 40, Fig. 1, at the base of the frame, which also operates the clutch to control the action of the heading-tool. The foot-lever is pivoted at its rear end to the base of the frame and has connected to it an arm 41, jointed at its end to the lower end of a rod 42, the upper end of which. is pivoted to one arm 43 of an elbow-lever mounted loosely on a shaft 44 extending transversely beneath the driving-shaft. The other arm 45 of the elbow-lever extends downward, and has its end connected bya rearwardly-extending rod 46 toa crank-arm 47, attached to the valve. As a result of this arrangement of the parts the depression of the foot-lever will cause the elbow-lever to be turned downward on its shaft, thereby drawing the rod 46 forward and turning the valve so that its port establishes a communication between the source of pressure and the interior of the cylinder. On the release of the foot-lever the parts are restored to their former positions and the valve operated to open the exitpassage by means of a spiral spring 48, encircling the rod 42 and bearing against the frame of the machine, and a collar 49, fixed to the rod.
In order that when the foot-lever is depressed to operate the valve to admit pressure to the cylinder the clutch will be thrown into action to cause the operation of the heading tool and'in order that the clutch may be operated independently of the valve-operating mechanism in cases where it is necessary to elevate the heading-tool before the smokeclamp is closed, I mount loosely on the shaft 44 a sleeve 50, having two vertical arms 51, provided with pins engaging in a groove in the clutch, and I fix to the end of this shaft at the side of the elbow-lever a hand-lever 52, provided with a finger 53., bearing against a shoulder 54 on the side of the elbow-lever. When, therefore, the foot-lever is depressed, the shoulder on the elbow-lever acts against the finger on the hand-lever and turns the same, thereby rocking shaft 44 and moving the clutch into engagement with the pulley 9.v
When it is desired to operate the clutch independently of the foot-lever, the hand-lever 52 is raised and the shaft rocked and the clutch engaged without moving the elbow-lever or parts connected therewith.
The form and arrangement of the valve, its operating mechanism, and the clutch are such that when the foot-lever is depressed the valve will be first opened to cause the clamp to be closed, and thereafter the clutch will be actuated to cause the operation of the headingtool, the purpose being to prevent the heading-tool from operating before the spoke and rim are properly clamped and held.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The piston being retracted, with the clamp open and the pressure-finger raised, the spoke is set in place between the clamp and the rim applied thereover beneath the pressurefinger. The foot-lever is now depressed, resulting in the operation of the valve to admit the fluid under pressure to the cylinder. The rod is then forced forward, closing the spokeclamp and depressing the pressure-finger on the rim. On the further depression of the foot-lever the clutch is thrown into action and the heading-tool reciprocated vertically and rotated and, acting on the end of the spoke, will form a head thereon above the rim. When the heading operation is completed, the foot-lever is released, its spring 48 restoring the actuating parts to their former position and operating the valve to shut off the communication with the source of pressure and open that to the atmosphere to permit the exhaust. The spring 30 on the rod in expanding positively moves the rod rearward and opens the spoke-clamp, at the same time withdrawing the head 38 from beneath the end of the lever carrying the pressure-finger, which lever by gravity descends at its rear end and raises the pressure-finger and releases the rim. The parts being acted on are now removed and the next spoke set in place to be subjected to the operation just described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a riveting-machine the combination with two pivoted clamping-jaws, of an operating cylinder and piston, apiston-rod joined to the piston and connected with the clamping-jaws, a casing situated between the jaws easpsi and formed with a socket, a spring encircling the piston-rod within the casing and seated in the socket and means for controlling the admission of fluidunder pressure to the cylinder; whereby when the jaws are closed the spring will be compressed, and in expanding will positively retract the rod and open the Jaws.
2. The combination with the spoke-clamp and its operating-rod, of the pressure-finger to act on the rim, a lever with which said finger is connected, and a head fixed to the rod and adapted to engage the lever.
3. In a machine of the type described the combination with the spoke-clamp and its operating cylinder and piston, of a valve for the cylinder, a heading-tool, a clutch controlling the operation of the same, a clutch-operating device, an elbow-lever for operating the clutch, connections between the valve and the elbow-lever, and means for operating the elbow-lever.
4. In a machine of the type described the combination with the spoke-clamp and its operating cylinder and piston, of means for controlling the action of the piston, a headingtool, a clutch controlling the operation of the same, an elbow-lever provided with a shoulder, suitable connections between the lever and the means for controlling the action of thepiston, a hand-lever operatively connected with the clutch-and adapted to engage the shoulder to operate the elbow-lever and movable independently thereof, and means for rocking the elbow-lever.

foot-lever, a connection between the same and the other arm of the elbow-lever, a hand-lever operatively connected with the clutch, movable independently of the elbow-lever but adapted to be engaged thereby on the depres sion of the foot-lever to operate the valve.
6. In a machine of the type described the combination with a spoke-clamp and its operating cylinder and piston of the valve for the cylinder, a heading-tool, a clutch controlling the operation of the same, a clutch-operating device, an elbow-lever to actuate the same, a rod connecting the valve with the elbow-lever, a foot-lever, and a connection between the foot-lever and the elbow-lever.
7. In a machine of the type described the combination with the clamping-jaws, of an operating mechanism therefor comprising a cylinder and piston, a controlling-valve for the'cylinder, a heading-tool, a clutch controlling its action, alever for operating the clutch, a foot-lever, a connection between the footlever and the lever for operating the clutch, and a connection between the latter lever and the valve.
8. In a machine of the type described the combination with the clamping-jaws, of an operating mechanism therefor, a controlling device for said operating mechanism, a heading-tool, a clutch controlling its action, an elbow-lever to operate the clutch, a rod connecting one arm of the elbow-lever with the controlling device for the clamp, a foot-lever, and a rod connecting the foot-lever with the other arm of the elbow-lever.
