COUNTER MECHANISM FOR METAL-WORKING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,043, dated July 4, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Nonennr SPERBER, a citizen of the German Empire, and a resident of Goppingen, in the Kingdom of WViirtemberg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Counter Mechanism for Metal-Working Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to counter mechanism adapted for use in connection with swaging or stamping machines, shearing apparatus, and like metal-working machines; and it consists, substantially, in such features of improvement as will hereinafter be more particularly described.
The object of the invention is to provide means in. any machine of the kinds referred to for increasing or practically doubling the 'eifective or working strokes of the operative devices thereof by the same throw of the crank-shaft and without increasing the driving power of the shaft.
The arrangement as applied, for instance, in the case of swaging or stamping machines or presses comprises counter-cranks mounted on the shaft of the press, one pair of which cranks is connected with the table and the other with the stamp-guide, while the sheetmetal holder is freely movable. By this means with the same throw of the crank and no increase in the consumption of power donble the swaging depth is obtained as would be the case with a single crank. As the resistance between the punch and die or swaging blocks. is absorbed by the cranks and crank-rods, the uprights and bed-plate are relieved of strain and shock, and the former serve merely for guiding the parts traveling between them, thus allowing of a much lighter construction of same. The gripping and retention of the sheet metal is, in this machine, effected by means of toggle-like links. These are arranged in such a way that when in position for work the table, the plate or sheetmetal holder, and the toggle-links form a whole, and are movable as a whole, whilein the ordinary elbow-lever sheet-metal holding devices hitherto employed, either the table or the plate-holder is fixed. These plate-holders also difier from the known apparatuses by the toggle-links in this case having only to endure the pressure between the table and the .plate I or sheet-metal holder, .while hitherto the el bow-levers had to receive the pressure of the stamp or. punch and also. that of the. plate holder, so that in the present invention the cranks are relieved of this load. The pressure on or gripping of the sheet metal (or metal plate) is attained and regulated in the simplest manner by adjusting the table itself by means of a worm and worm-wheel.
' In the accompanying drawings a doublecrank arrangement with toggle-like plateholding device is shown in connection with a heavy swaging-press.
Figure 1 isa vertical elevation in part section, andFig. 2 is a side view thereof, also in part section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line as m of Fig. 2. Figs. 4 and 5 are diagrams of simpler double-crank arrangements, such as maybe employed for swaging or stamping machines or presses of medium or less strength.
The machine consists, essentially, of a crank-shaft C, mounted in a frame J and 0perated by cog-wheels r R and r R and connected by means of connecting-rods H with a table G, traveling between the uprights K,
.and by means of connecting-rods B with a stamp-guide cross-head A, on which the sheet or plate holder P is suspended by means of bars p p and pressed downward by means of springs to. The sheet or plate holder P is adjustably connected with the table G by the double toggle-like links S Sin such a way that the free ends of the shorter links of the toggle are firmly connected with the holder P by pins u and those of the longer links with the table by means of pins a.
Before the machine comes into action the cranks c in the crank-shaft 0 stand in the lowest-position and the cranks 0 on wheels R R in the highest. When the sheet-metal disk W, lying on the tool M, is to be stamped or swaged, the cranks 0 move in the direction shown by the arrow,'Fig. 2, upward with the table G, and the cranks c downward with the stamp-guide A, plate-holder P, and tool 19, attached to the latter, while the toggle-links S S, which are extendedand are in connection with the table G and plate-holder P, are shortened above until the crank assumes a position of ninety degrees. At this point, as shown in the drawings, the tool 1), attached to the plate-holder P, rests on the plate, and the latter in turn rests on the tool M, and the plate is then gripped by means of the togglelinks S, having rollers 0, which engage between guides k, while the stamp D, mounted on the stamp-guide A and adjustable by means of a screwed spindle (1, still stands somewhat above the sheet-metal disk W, Fig. 1. By a further rotation of the double-crank shaft 0 again of ninety degrees the disk is swaged, and on a further rotation of ninety degrees the stamp-guide A moves upward, while the plate-holder P, table G, and tools 19 and M, also toggle-links S, descend. In the position of two hundred and seventy degrees of the cranks the toggle-links S, or, rather, their rollers 0, emerge from between the guides 10, and the shorter members of the toggle-links are spread outwardly and downwardly, and they move in the latter direction, together with the longer members or links and the table G and tool M, While the plate-holder P and tool 19 are carried along with the stamp-guide A by means of the rods 19 on the further rising of the said stamp-guide until the highest position is reached, when the operation recommencesafresh. The necessary pressure be tween the tools 19 and M is regulated by an adjustment of the table G by means of a worm n and worm-wheel N, 1.
Two cranks or even only one crank, according to the power of the swaging-press, may be employed for operating each tool or swageblock. For instance, in Fig. 4 two cranks are employed for moving the table and only one for the stamp, while in Fig. 5 only one is employed for each of the two tools.
The ejection of the swaged piece takes place by means of an ejector E to be employed as required and adjustable in height by means of a spindle e, the ejection being made through an opening provided for the drawn pieces.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of mysaid invention and in what mannerthe same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a movable table or support operated thereby, a movable cross-head also operated by said shaft, a plate-holder and a tool moving with the cross-head, and movable connections between said table and plate-holder.
2. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a movable table or support operated thereby, means for adjusting said table, a movable cross-head also operated by said shaft, a plate-holder and a tool simultaneously moving with the cross-head, and movable connections between said table and plate-holder.
3. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a simultaneously reciprocating support and plate-holder operated from said shaft, and movable connections between said support and plate-holder, as set forth.
4. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a simultaneously reciprocating support and plate-holder operated from the shaft, and toggle-links connecting the said support and holder.
5. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a simultaneously reciprocating support and plate-holder operated from the shaft, a tool also reciprocating with said holder, and toggle-links connecting the said support and holder.
6. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, of a simultaneously reciprocating support and plate-holder operated thereby, a reciprocating tool, and toggles comprising long and short links, with the ends of the latter. movably connected to the holder, and the ends of the former connected to the support. 7
7. In mechanism for the purpose described, the combination with a crank-shaft, 0f amovable table or support operated therefrom, a movable cross-head, connections between the cross-head and shaft, a tool and a plateholder carried by the cross-head, toggle-links connecting the table and holder, and an ejector for the finished article.
8. In a counter-crank arrangement such as described for swaging or stamping machines, shearing apparatus, eccentric presses and the like, a double toggle-like link-gear freely movable with the table and plate-holder and only receiving the pressure of theplate-hold er, the links of said double toggle being so connected with the table and plate-holder that when in an extended position they form a movable whole therewith, substantially as hereinbefore described.
