REGISTERING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,971, dated July 4, 1899.
Application filed June 24,1898.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that 1, MAX LUDWIG AMANDUS BOHLE, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registering Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to registering apparatus, and more especially to the combination of a registering mechanism with appliances for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another-as, for instance, with appliances for loading and unloading vehicles and boats or for otherwise shifting materials from one point to another; and it has for its object the provision of means whereby each load shifted isautomatically registered.
The invention has for its further object the provision of means whereby a fraudulent registration without the connivance of the person having charge of the apparatus is rendered impossible, or practically so; but that my invention may be fully understood I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figures 1 and 2 showin elevation an apparatus embodying my invention, the mechanism in Fig. 1 being shown in its normal position and in Fig. 2 in its position when a load is suspended from the apparatus, the back cover-plate in both figures being removed.
In said figures of the drawings, G indicates a casing of suitable form and material, in which is secured an angular or L-shaped bracket 9 having an opening in its horizontal member, in which is guided the upper end of the shank a of a hook a, to which the load to be shifted is suspended, said shank 66 being furthermore guided in a suitable opening 9 in the bottom of the casing G. To the shank a of a hook a. is secured a sleeve a which has a circular flange a engaging notches in the proximate faces of the hubs of two levers 0 e pivoted in the casing G on pivots 0 one on each side of the hook-shank Cb. These levers are acted upon by springs ff likewise secured in the casing and tending to move said levers apart or into a normal position, Fig. 1. i

The levers 0 0 are connected with an actuating-rod c by means of links a 0, so that when the levers are moved toward each other to bring the latches b and If into engagement said rod 0 will be moved upwardly.
In its upper part the casing G'hasa chamber or housing for the registering mechanism B, through which housing the actuating-rod extends, and said casing has at its said upper end an eye G for connecting it to the hoisting and shifting appliances. The registering mechanism may be of any well-known construction and the prime mover may be a ratchet-wheel, to which a step-by-step movement is imparted either at each upstroke of the actuating-rod c or at each downstroke thereof, to which end said rod is to be provided at its upperend with a spring-controlled pawl arranged to turn the ratchet either durin g its upward or during its downward stroke, and as such appliances are commonly used for imparting a progressive movement to a prime mover of a registering mechanism I have deemed it unnecessary to either illustrate or describe the same.
From the hub of the lever 0 projects a radial arm 0 connected by a rod gwith a mousing or guard d, pivoted to the hook at to close the entrance thereto.
At a suitable point in the front plate of the casing G is formed a keyhole 6, so that when a key is inserted and turned its bit will engage the fiange on the plate b of the latch 17 when'the latches b'b are locked together to move the former against the stress of its spring out of engagement with its companion latch b a i The operation of the apparatus is as follows: If a load is attached to the hook at, Fi 1, and lifted clear of its support, the weight will draw said hook down or outwardly and the flange a on sleeve a will cause the levers 0 a to move toward each other until their latches are engaged, when said sleeve will seat on the bottom of the casing, and thus stop further downward movement of the hook. At the same time the actuating-rod is moved upwardly by the links a 0, its pawl imparting a partial 'iotation to the primemoving ratchet, causing a suitable hand to move a given distance over a graduated scale .on the dial of the registering mechanism, while the radial arm {1 draws the mousing orguard (Z outwardly to close the entrance to the hook, as shown in Fig. 2. It is obvious that unless the latches Z) b are disengaged the load cannot be removed from the hook a, and it is further obvious that this cannot be done until the said hook is relieved of its load by placing the lattenupon a suitable support, when the latch b can readily be disengaged from latch b by means of a key, When the springs ff will move the levers c o apart, thereby moving the load-supporting hook and the actuating-rod 0 in opposite directionsnamely, downward and upward, respectively-and simultaneously therewith the hook-mousing g to open the entrance to said hook, as will be readily understood. The latches b b are disengaged by the introduction into the keyhole e" of a key, which on being turned Will bring its bit into contact with the flange on the plate I) on latch b, thereby depressing said latch against the stress of its spring and disengaging it from the latch b I have herein shown a simple and somewhat primitive means for moving the latch 19 against the stress of its spring by means of a key as an example only, as it will readily be understood that appliances well known in the art of constructing locks which may not be readily tampered with. may be employed to disengage the latches b and b so that any fraudulent registration cannot be made without the connivancc of the person having possession of the key.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a toand-fro-movable load-support, means forconnecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism, a to-and-fro-movable actuating-rod therefor, and mechanism for transmitting the movements of the loadsupport to said actuating-rod, for the purpose set forth.
2. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a toand-fro-niovable load-support, means for connecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suit able registering mechanism, a to-and-fro-movable actuating-rod therefor, mechanism for transmitting the movements of the load-support to said actuating-rod and means for limiting the to-and-fro movements of said support and rod, for the purpose set forth.
3. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from 'one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted comprising a toand-fro-movable load-support, means for connecting'it with the hoisting'appliances, a suit able registering mechanism, a to-and-fro-movable actuating-rod therefor, mechanism for transmitting the movements of the support to said rod, and means for locking both against motion, forthe purpose set forth;

5. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a toand-fro-movable load-support, means for connecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism, a to-and-fro-movable actuating-rod therefor, mechanism for transmitting the movements of the support to said rod, and key-operated means for looking both against motion, for the purpose set forth.
6. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a to-and-fro-movable load-supporting hook, a
mousing for closing the entrance to said hook,
means for connecting the latter with the hoisting apparatus, a suitable registering mechanism and a to-and-fro-movable actuatingrod therefor, in combination with mechanism for transmitting the movements of said hook to said rod and simultaneously therewith move the hook-mousing to close or open the entrance to the hook according as the latter moves in one or the other direction, for the purpose set forth.
7. In apparatusfor hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a movable load-support adapted to be moved in one direction by a load, means for connecting the support with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism and an actuatingrod therefor, in combination with mechanism for transmitting the movement of said support due to the load thereon to said actuatingrod, and means for moving the rod and the load-support in an opposite direction when the load is removed, for the purpose set forth.
8. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprising a movable load-support adapted to be moved in one direction by a load, means for connecting the support with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism for transmitting the movement of said support due to the load thereon to said actuating-rod, and means for automatically moving the rod and the load-support in an opposite direction, when the load is removed, for the purpose set forth.
9. In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted, comprisinga casing provided with means for connecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism contained in said casing and a to-and-fro-movable actuating-rod for said mechanism, a load-supporting hook whose shank has free motion in suitable bearings in said casing, a pair of levers, means operated by the hook to move saidlevers toward or from each other according as said hook moves in one or the other direction, and means whereby rectilinear motion in one or the other direction is imparted to the aforesaid actuating-rod through said levers according as they move toward or from each other, for the purpose set forth.

I11 apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one .point to another, means for registering the loads shifted com prisin ga casing provided with means for connecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism, contained in said casing, and an actuating-rod for said mechanism; in combination with a load-supporting hook whose shank has free motionin bearings in the casing, a pair of levers, springs acting thereon to move the same apart, means operated bying provided with means for connecting it with the hoisting appliances, a suitable registering mechanism contained in said casing and an actuating-rod for said mechanism; in combination with a load-supporting hook whose shank has free motion in hearings in the casing, a pair of levers, a locking-latch rigidly secured to one of said levers and a like complementary spring-actuated latch pivoted to the other lever, springs acting on said levers to move the same from each other, means operated by the hook when loaded to move the levers toward each other and the latches into engagement, appliances for imparting rectilinear reciprocating movements to the afore said actuating-rod through said levers, and means for disengaging the movable latch from its companion latch, for the purpose set forth.

In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering theloads shifted comprising a casing provided with means for connecting it with'the hoisting appliances, the load-supporting hook a whose shank a has free motion in bearings in said casing, the flanged sleeve a secured to said shank, the levers 0 0 fulcrumed in the casing and having notches in their hubs engaging the flange on said sleeve (1, the latches b and b at the free ends of said levers and the springsfand f acting on said levers to move them from each other; in combination with the actuating-rod c the links a respectively pivoted to the aforesaid levers and rod, and means for disengaging the latches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In apparatus for hoisting and shifting loads from one point to another, means for registering the loads shifted comprising a casing provided with means for connectingit with the hoisting appliances, the loadsupporting hook a whose shank a has free motion in bearings in the casing, the mousing d pivoted to said hook, the flanged sleeve secured to the hook-shank within said casing, the levers 0 0 fulcrumed therein and having notches in their hubs engaging the flange on said sleeve a the connectingrod g pivotally connected with the hub of lever c and with the aforesaid mousing, the latches b and b at the free ends of said levers and the springs f and f acting on the levers to move them apart; in combination with the actuating-rod 0 the links 0 a respectively pivoted to said levers and rod, and means for disengaging the aforesaid latches, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 7

The combination with the casing provided with a keyhole c, the levers c and e and the latches b and b at the free end of said levers, said latch 19 provided with a depending flanged plate 6' arranged to lie below the aforesaid keyhole within reach of the bit of a key when said latches are in engagement; of the load-supporting hook at whose shank has free motion in hearings in the casing, means controlled by said hook when loaded to move the levers toward each other, and the latches into engagement, means for moving the levers apart and therethrough the hook when the load is removed, the actuating-rod c and the links 0 a respectively pivoted to said'rod and to the aforesaid levers, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
