UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIPP MEYER, OF MAGDEBURG, GERMANY.
FOLDING UMBRELLA-STICK.
SPECIFICATION forming' part Of Letters Patent N O. 627,780, dated J' une 27, 1899,.
Application filed November 7,1898. Serial No. 695,687. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIPP MEYER, asubject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Magdeburg, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Sticks, of which the following is a specification. T
The object of my invention is to provide means allowing an umbrella to be shortened, which has been possible heretofore only with umbrellas the sticks of which carry stopsprings on their surfaces.
In the drawings illustrating my invention and which form a part of this application, Figure l represents a longitudinal sectional view of an umbrella-stick madein accordance with my invention, showing the stick extended. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the stick retracted and folded. Figs. 3 and 4 are details of a portion of the stick.
In the hollow stick A of the umbrellal have inserted a sliding hinged rod adapted to be rotated and formed in three sections D D D2. The part D has an extension at its lower end provided with an annular groove L and extending into a corresponding recess in thev part D', through which extends a pin Z, moving in said groove L as the partsD Dl are turned, whereby the said partsare movably connected with each other. The part D is connected with the part D2 through the joint d and by the rivets d' and d2, and the handle K is secu red to the section D2in any suitable manner. Within the hollowpart of the section D2 above the handle is arranged a latch f, by means of which the entire hinged rod is held or locked in the double bayonet-joint z',
i', and 2 on the lower end of the stick A. By this means of locking the rod I may dispense with the stop-spring usually arranged on the surface of said stick and may employ any form of frame or mounting with the latter.
At the lower or ferrule end of the part D of hinged rod is a rod h, which connects the part H, forming the ferrule end `of the umbrella-stick, with the section D. Surrounding said connecting-rod his fitted a spiral spring g, one end pressing against a stop g', secured within the stick-A, and the opposite end bearing against the ferrule end H.
As the entire rod is withdrawn from the stick A the connecting-rod h, as Well as the part H secured thereto, is caused to slide within the `hollow stick A, whereby the length of umbrella will be shortened by the length of the ferrule end II and, when the said handle K will be folded at the joint d, at the same time by the length of handle K. Y
The latch f is normally held down by a spiral spring which surrounds it, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2.
By the construction shown I secure a folding umbrella-stick on which there is no pro# jection eXteriorly except the latch f, and this being near the handle end does not interfere with any device that maybe employed for raising the umbrella-frame.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An umbrella-stick composed of a cylindrical casing, a rod arranged within the casing and composed of a ferrule-section, a handle-section and an intermediate section, a hinged connection between the handle-section and the intermediate section, the spring g, and a bayonet-joint in the handle-section, substantially as set forth.
PHILIPP MEYER.
