SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,659, dated June 27, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN B. SPRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plym: outh, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Expanding Au gers,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to expanding angers for boring or drilling holes of varying diameter or size.
I The chief objects of ,my invention are to improve prior constructions of expanding augers, to provide a new and improved anger of the character referred to wherein the screw tip or worm and the radially adjustable or expanding cutter can be conveniently and quickly removed and replaced and the-radially-movably cutter canbe adjusted in a simple manner and when adjusted to the desired position is firmly and securely held, and to provide a strong, substantial, and durable connection of the radially adjustable or expansible cutter with the screw tip or worm' and a head on the twisted 0r other-shaped auger-shank.
To accomplish these objects, my inventioninvolves the features of construction the combination or arrangement of parts, and the principles of operation hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an anger embodying my invention. Fig. 2'is a similar view looking at the anger in a direction at right angles to the view Fig. 1. Fig. 3 isa detail longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 4 at, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the screw tip or worm, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the radially adjustable or expansible cutter. y
In order to enable those skilled in the ar to make and use myinvention, I will now de? scribe the same in detail, referring to 'the drawings, wherein- The numeral l'indicates the shank of the auger, which may be spirally twisted, as shown, or of any'other form, shape, or configuration suitable for the purpose in hand, for which reason .I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to a spirally-twisted shank, although such construction may be preferred. The shankis formed with a flattened end, (indicated in Fig.1 by the numeral 2.) This flattened end is' approximately rectangular and fits a correspondingly-shaped socket in a more or less flattened solid metallic head 3, the head and the flattened end 2 being rigidly secured together in any suitable manner, preferably through the medium of a transverse bolt, pin, or rivet 4. The head 3 is constructed in the end opposite the end in which the flattened extremity 2 of the shank 1 is socured with a longitudinal rectangular socket 5 and a transverse rectangularsocketfi, which intersects the longitudinal socket and is arranged at right angles thereto. The head is also provided with a transverse orifice 7 for the reception of a removable and replaceable pin 8, preferably in the form of a split springpin, which will remain in position when introduced into the perforation. The augerbit or screw tip or worm 9 is provided with a flattened rectangular extremity 10 of such dimensions as to more or less accurately fit the longitudinal socket 5 in the head 3, and this flattened rectangular end 10 is formed or provided with a series of longitudinal corrugations or serrations 12 and a transverse perforation 13, designed to register with the perforation 7, so that when the corrugated or serrated flattened extremity 10 is inserted into the longitudinal socket 5 the pin 8 can be passed through the perforations 7 and 13 to securely connect the auger-bit or screw tip or tions or serrations 16, which when the arm 15 is inserted into the transverse socket may be made to interlock with the longitudinal serrations or corrugations 12 of the flattened extremity 10 of the auger-bit or screw tip or worm 9.
In practice the laterally- 'n'ojecting arm 15 of the adjustable or expansible cutter 14 is first introduced into the transverse socket G, and subsequently the auger-bit or screw tip or worm 9 is inserted lengthwise into the longitudinal socket 5, so that the corrugations or serrations 12 of its flattened extremity 10 may slide into engagement with the transverse corrugations or serrations 16 in one side of the arm 15. Vhen the perforation 13 in the corrugated or serrated extremity of the auger-bit or screw tip or worm 9 coincides or registers with the perforation 7 in the metallichead 3, the pin 8 is introduced, and by this means a strong, substantial, and-durable, but adjustable, connection between the metallic head, the radially adjustable or expansible cutter, and the auger-bitorscrew tip or worm is obtained.
The improved expansible anger is susceptible of boring or drilling holes of varying diameter or size, it only being necessary to radially adjust the cutter, which adjustment is effected by first detaching the locking-pin 8, removing the auger-bit or screw tip or Worm 9, adjusting the cutter 1a to the desired position, and then replacing the auger-bit or screw tip or worm and locking-pin so that the corrugated or serrated end 10 interlocks with the corrugated or serrated side of the arm 15 of the cutter, as before explained.
The provision of the transverse and longitudinal sockets in the metallic head and the interlocking of the extremities of the adjustable or expansible cutter and the auger-bit or screw tip or worm secure a very strong, substantial, and durable connection of the parts, which is very advantageous, while the expansible cutter can be conveniently, quickly, and radially adjusted for adapting the auger to bore or drill the diameter or size of hole required.
The solid metallic head is formed at one corner with a lateral flange 17, projecting slightly below the lower end of the head in the form of a finger 18 for the purpose of affording a firm base of support to the cutter, whereby the latter is braced in a strong and substantial manner.
The metallic head,constructed as described, can be fitted to one extremity of any kind of an auger-shank, and by having one side cutter only the auger will cut easier, quicker, straighter, and smoother than if a plurality of side hits were used.
The cutter can be connected with or 'disconnected from the metallic head without the use of a wrench or other separate tool by merely removing the pin 8 and drawing the auger-bit or screw tip orworm outward. A number of the cutters maybe sharpened and carried about in a miners pocket, so that if the cutter which is in use becomes dull ordainaged a new cutter can be conveniently and quickly substituted for it.
The device is particularly designed for boring or drilling coal and rock; but obviously it can be used for many other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of a head having a longitudinal and a transverse socket opening into or communicating with each other, an angerbit or screw-tip having a shank fitted into the longitudinal socket and provided with a series of corrugations or serrations, a radially-adjustable side cutter having an arm fitting into the transverse socket and provided also with a series of corrugations or serrations which interlock with the corrugations or serrations on the end portion of the auger-bit or screwtip, and means for holding the auger-bit or screw-tip in operative connection with the head, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a head having a longitudinal and a transverse socket, of an auger-bit or screw-tip constructed to fit the longitudinal socket and provided with a series of corrugations or serrations, a radially-adjustable side cutter having an arm constructed to fit the transverse socket and provided with a series of corrugations or serrations which interlock with the corrugations or serrations of the auger-bit or screw-tip, anda removable and replaceable locking-pin passing into the head and through the corrugated or I serrated end of the auger-bit or screw-tip, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in an expanding auger, of a shank having a flattened extremity,
a head having at one end a socket to receive said flattened extremity and at the other end a longitudinal and a transverse socket opening into or communicating with each other, an auger-bit or screw-tip having one end constructed to fitthe longitudinal socket and'having a series of corrugations or serrations, a radially-adjustable side cutter having an arm to fit the transverse socket and provided with series of corrugations or serrations which interlock with the corrugations or serrations of the auger-bit or screw-tip, and means for rigidly holding the latter in connection with the head, substantially as described. 7
