Be it known that I, JOHNZ'UNDOPLFF, of New York, inthe county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a lNewand Improved Safety-Valve for Steam Boilers; and I do herebytdeclare that the follows ing is a i'iill and exact description thereof', reference being had `to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters 0i' reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation.
Figure f3 is a longitudinalsection.
Figure 3 'is'an edge view.

. i Y v Ucristrzti'z'on and Operation.
The cylinder c1 and case :7c are made as-slro'wn by figsil, 2, 3; the pipe r is then attached by the ineans ofilange c; the piston b and cap al are then made; the packing ring E is fitted on the lower end of the piston-rod I); the packing ring E is made in three parts; the inside ring u ismade the full length ofthe packing, with a longitudinll slot, ai; the 'outside rings areumade in two 'eqilal parts t t', with their diagonal slots a am; the packing is held in Vposition `on the piston by means of the flange hf'at the top end of the packing; the cap and flange t are put on at the lower end and made fast by means of'screw 1W; the piston b and cap flare then fitted into the cylinder a and Apipe r; thejspring` C is then put into the cylinder a, the large end resting. in the cap'd; the spring C is depressed by the means ofthe lever l; the powerof the spring is regulated by set-screw Y,"whiclrhas a cup on the under side of the lever Z te receive the small end ot' the spring Crthc set-screw Y is held firm lin its position by the means of the jam-nutZ. The remainder of the works is then iitted into the case as shown in tig. 2; the enlarged or sphericalformedfpiecewvith its exhaust pipa q, is then attached; the spherical-form piece put on to the pipe 1' over thestea'm ports G G G GH', and fastened there by soldering or brnzing. Allrof the several partsliaving been put together, and lthe packing ring E adjusted to the proper-distance in the pipe 7' below `the ports G G GrL G", the cover-.V closed and lockedv by means of look V and key'W, the steam valve is non' ready Afor use. I
. 4 i `Opergtt'on'.
The steam valve, after being made and manipulated so as to work perfectly free and easy, is adjusted to the steam, boiler 'by means of screw flange or in any other known way; the shipperf on the indicator t' is set at the desired point according to the number of pounds 0"steam that-isdesired to bev carried by the boiler; the steam is then gott-en up; the capacity of the pipe r is rated by square inches; the spring C is graduated accordingly; the figures on the indicator t indicate at the point on shipper'f the number of pounds of steam. When the steam becomes higher than it is desired to be, it pushes the valve E, on the lower end ofthe piston-rod I), up above the `p nts G G' G" G", and allows the steam toescape through the ports 'into the enlargement or spherical piece oilpipc p, from thence conveys it through the waste pipe y. Should the steam become so-high to lift the valve up above the ports G G Gi G", theshipper g that is attached tothe cup d will pass the shipperf that' is fazsteuedand made movable to the shipper bar h, and through the shipper barback at the lower-end, or turns it on the pivot 7W; by that means the'arin on onthe shipper bar is elevated; that, lifting Athe arm m ou the latch j, by turning ou pivot L/f, causes the latch to relinquish its hold on the arln 'nt of lat-ch K; latch K thei1.lets vgo on thecatch Z' that is made a part of the lever Z that d'eplesses or keeps the spring C to its proper place. When `the latch K is. disengagedwith the catch l, the lever l is lifted up, and by that means the spring e and piston L are at liberty to rise up so as 4to let the valve come above the ports G G Grl G', thereby allowing the steam to escape freely, and causing instant relief to the boilers. There may be a whistle attached to the blow-oil` pipe q, so as to call the attention of the engineer to the fact that he has on more steam than he is'required to carry.
4 Advantages.
The advantage of my Yinvention consists in providing a neat, compact, and reliable steam safety-valve that can be applied to locomotive as well as stationary boilers, and when applied the working parts are locked up sons ro prevent their heiligV interfered with by any one, except those .in charge of the boilers. `At the same time, the peint o, on the outside of the cylinder'a, points out-on the indicator n the amount of steam in the boiler..

2. The combination of the mlve'E, and ports @GWG/ G", for the-purpose specified. 3. The spring b, in combination with the piston d, shippers g andf, vh-en operated as above described. VJOHN ZUNDORFF.
