Description

@ritten tute getint @fitte- Zeiten-s .Patent ro. 52,721, dated March 5, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM VALVES,
@In 'dgihulr ntitrrhfiu in tliisc iitn's hlteit zint mating nrt nf tigt sami.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN ZUNDORFL, oi' the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a. new and improved Steam Valve; :ind Ido hereby declare that the 'following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the nccoinpnnyin'g drawings, and to the letters of reference mnrked'thereon. i
Figure l is n side elevation.
Figure 2 is nlongitudinnl section.
a is the cylinder containing the works; bis the egpnnding ring for closing the parts of the valve; c c :tre the plates forming the ends oiv` expanding-ring b,- d isthe pistonl and ratchet; e is'the lever; f is`the pinion; g is the nut for gouging the stroke; VL ere the cylinder bends; k 7: :ire the steam-pipe connections; Z is the nnt on end ol" piston; m mi etre the stenmports; n is the slot in the expanding ring Z.
The nature of my invention consiste in a simple and secure steam vnlve for the purpose of cuttingf oif .stenm effectually without regard to the amount of pressure produced.
To'ennble others skilled in the t.rt tomo-ke and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its conetrnction and operation. l l
Construction v The cylinder a is formed oi' inetnil to the required cnpz-tcity with itsstenm-pipe connections, t', with its steam-port holes, 'm m', tra-nsversewisc of the cylinder from connection k t0 fr. Thecylinder -hends /L /i nre then iittedns shown in tige. l and 2. The expensive ring is then made with its longitudinal slot u end trztnsversc ports m'm of size and dimension corresponding with the bore of cylinder a, the plates b b being runde and fitted with apertures in their centres to'receive the piston and ratchet-rod d. The expansive ring b, plates r: and :md ratchet-rod d, nre pnt together und im'erted'into'the cylinder a. The pinionf and the lever f being adjusted, the valve is ready for use.
Operation.
'lhe steam vnrlve being adjusted for use, its operation is ns follows: When stenm is let on the ports :1re closed by the expansive ring I), so as not to ndmitisteem lthrough the v-.tlve opening. In order that the steam shell pasa; through the valve opening, the lever c is depressed, as shown in fig. 2, thereby giving free circulation to the steam through the vulve opening and pipes for conducting the steam to any desired place.
The expansive ring ismnde of nny known flexible metal turned or worked ofi' eo as to it the cylinder, the cylinder being mede it-little tapering at the end in which the ring is inserted, so that the ring hais to be cr'owdcd in by force; then, :is the ring` :Lnd cylinder weer by use, the ring expands and :tlwnys fits the cylinder, thereby keeping the valve niwnys tight. K v
Whitt I claim :is my invention, :wd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
'lhe expansive movable ring I1, with longitudinal slot n and ports m m', when constructed substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
