UNrrED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W'ILLIE ERASTUS STURDAVANT, OF SPRINGFIELD, MISSOURI.
METALLIC CAR-ROOF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,151, dated June 20, 1899.
' Application filed January 23,1899. Serial No. 703,207. (No model.)
To atZZ whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WILLIE ERAsTus Srun- DAVANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Greene and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Oar- Roofs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic car-roofs, the object of which is to provide a cheap, simple, durable, and convenient device to be used as a car-roof and one that is not effected by the bending or twisting of the car while in motion and one that may be removed in sections without taking off the wooden part ofthe car-roof. This object I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which-- Figure l is a vertical cross-section lengthwise of the car. Fig, 2 is a vertical crosssection of the end of the car. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing one of the plates. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing one of the braces or supports for holding the ribs in place.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A is a plate or sheet of metal, made of any suitable material, preferably of galvanized iron, to be used in the roof of a car and is made to enter a groove G2 in the side of a ridge-plate G at one end and extends down to the edge or caves of the car I-I, just behind the frieze 1-1 which holds it in place and prevents it from slipping out. Said plate A is provided with upturned edges A which enter the grooves Win the ribs B. Said plates or sheets A are made of any desired width, preferably to extend from one carline to the other.
B is a rib, made of any desired material, preferably of iron, and is made to enter a groove G in the side of the ridge-plate G and extend down to the edge or cave of the car, where it is held firmly in place by means of the braces or supports 0. Said rib B is made of any desired material, preferably of iron, and is T-shaped, as-shown in Fig. l, and is provided with grooves H for receiving the flange A of plate A and has flanges B which are provided With holes B for receiving bolts or securers D for fastening the ribs to the upper covering or framework of the car. Rib B is also provided with an opening B for re= ceiving the end of the support 0, which se cures the lower ends of ribs B to the edge of the car.
G is a support or brace and is made of any suitable material, preferably of iron, and is made so that one end enters the opening B" in rib B, and the other end is provided with openings for receiving screws or bolts for fastening the support to the side of the car. This device allows the plates A to be removed or slipped out by removing the frieze-board H without disturbing any other part of the roof and also allows the car to bend or twist without tearing or breaking the plates A.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a car-roof the plate A having upturned edges A in combination with ribs B provided with grooves 13 flanges B holes B and opening B with a support 0, and ridge-pole G, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIE ERASTUS STURDAVAN'I.
