ADVERTISING APPARATUS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,952, dated June 13,1899.

Be it known that I, HERMANN WOINKE, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Gross-Lichterfelde, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to means for exhibiting advertisements in which the separate letters or parts of some advertising sentence with accompanying illustration, if any, are exhibited successively until the whole sentence is in view, whereupon after desirable lapse of time all such letters or parts are simultaneously obscured and rendered invisible, to be replaced in a similar manner by an other sentence, and so on until the whole of the series for which the apparatus has been adapted has been shown and is in the same manner recommenced. Apparatus fulfilling this purpose and arranged for six successive sentences is shown in the annexed drawings,

in which Figure 1 is an elevation of so much of the apparatus as is adapted for showing four letters or parts of an advertisement. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, thereof; and Fig. 3 is a plan .view.

In a suitable frame R are rotarily mounted a number of disks B 13 13 13 850. on a similar number of shafts A A A A", &c. Each disk l3, &c. ,may be considered as divided by radial lines into a number of fieldsfor example, twelve, as in the drawings, of which the half say six-having perforations a, forming windows, alternate with the other half, which are opaque, as at 1). Corresponding to each field there is in the edge of the disk a slot S-for example, twelve slots equidistant from one another, and in relation to the disks B B B Bfldvc. ,there are mounted an equivalent nu mber of wheels 0 (J C O, &c., and in these wheels are pins D D D D ,&c., one on each, and also pins- E E E E &c., one on each. The wheels have gear, which causes them to revolve equally, and they are so geared that all the pins D D D D occupy the same angular relation on each wheel, whereas the pins E E 131 E occupy different angular relations namely, the pin E having a desired angular relation to pin D,while the pin E has a greater angular relation to pin D and the pin E a yet greater angular relation to pin D and so on, the angular relation in the direction of revolution increasing for each wheel.

,The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, all the pins D D D D gear simultaneously with the slots S'of the'disks B- B B B", respectively, and on the further rotation of the wheels all the disks B B B 13 ,850., will be simultaneously revolved. (The drawings illustrate the middle phase of this part revolution.) This movement corresponds to the extinction ofvisibility of the advertisement, since thereby the series of orifices a, which were illuminated, are moved from the sphere of illumination and replaced by opaque parts b of the disks B B B B &c. When the pin E, which bears the smallest angular relation to its fellow pin D on the same wheel, in the course of revolution of the wheel arrives at the periphery of disk B it will partially revolve the disk B, so as to render visible the first letter or part of the next advertisement, and the pins E E E successively moving the other disks B B B the following letters or parts of the advertisement will be brought successively into view until the whole of this advertisement is visible, which visibility will continue until the pins D D D 1) again simultaneously cause part revolution of the whole of the disks B l3 l3 l3 and so cause the advertisement to disappear.

It will thus be understood that in the apparatus illustrated'six advertisements may be caused to successively appear and that each of these appears gradually by letter or part and disappears as a whole.

Having therefore described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' An exhibiting device comprising in combination a series of rotary disks having transparent fields alternated with opaque fields and having recesses equivalentin number to said fields, a series of wheels, gear connecting said wheels, and pins on said wheels adapted on their revolution to give intermittent part revolution to the disks aforesaid, the said pins being disposed in two. groups whereof the one group is so placed as to simultaneously move the disks and the other group to successively move the disks for the purpose set forth.
