IMPROVEMENT I IN HOSE-COUPLINGS.
i l'Bc it knownthat we, WILLIAMJOHN ,Os'noUnNE und G. B. Mnssnr, of Nerv York, in tho county of New York, und Stute ci' New York, have invented eert-nin new orldv useful Improvements in Hose-Couplings; und we do hereby declare that the following is uV full,.,cle ur, und erect description thereof, reference being hed to the uccompnnying d1awings,'maki1 1g pcrt of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thcreon, likc letters indicating like ports wherever they occur. 4 l i To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
` i Our invention ponsists'in ,nV novel method of securing the hose pipes or couplings, und in a. novel errunge- `ment of devicesfor. coupling or 'locking tho joints of pipe together.
Figure 1 is .n longitudinal section pf 'the coupling und pipe when united. Y, Figur 2 yis a side view of the coupling devices separated. l f Our invention has for its object theproduction of c'coupling that cnu'be quickly und easily united without -the useof .nnyspeciol tools forthat purpose, und which shall be so constructed that there shall he no screw- `thread liable tio be bruised or' injured by felling on the stones of the psvemrent, or by similar ineens; and in providing n sirnpl'ennd efficient means'of uniting the hose Vto the pipe.
To accomplish these objects. .we construct the coupling of two ports, A nndvB, as shown in iig. On the i pnrt Afan enlargement or.hend,.1), is formed. For nboutone-hulf of its circumference this heed, D, has a. lip, i QF, projecting, as shown in fig. V2, und ou the inside ofuthis projecting part, F, there is formed a. circumferential 'groove or recess, n, ns shown in iig. 1; The part B consists of c'siiuple tube, with escrow-thread cut externslly in its.. end, and on this is litt-ed a. collar, E, huvingn corresponding thread cut on it internally, so that by turning n -ithe collar E it muy be screwed bocliwsrd or forward oh the tube B.V This collar, E, hns's. flange, e, projecting Vredis-ily from itntono end, as shown, this ilonge, e, boing` suited toit in the recess or groove n inthe projection 'lhc collur'E is also provided with lugs or handles, hens shown',fby which it4 con beftu'rned when desired. 'Within the' head Da. recess formed internally, to receive u ring of leather 4or other sui'tnble packing, as rcpresented by fniig. 1. 4 To unite the parts AcndfB the collet` E is screwed forward tothe end of B,Von d. its flange,
e, then dropped into the groove 1t of the projectinglpurt F ofthe head D. The coller is thenvturnod bn-clcwnrd, V bywhich means the tubo B is forced forward until Vits end impinges tightly 'ngainstr'the packing ring a, thus uniti-ng 'the two parte nud `closing the joint tight. By this method of construction wo cvoid the necessity oil` turning the projecting lip 17', which may thus'bc left stutionuryfin proper positionA t'oihnve the collar E 0n, the
opposite end of tbc coupling dropped therein, thecllur being turned instead .of V the lip F to tighten thejoint.
As it is necessary that the end oi' the tube B should coins so as to bcar'directly on thcpocki'ng ring and vns thisrwould not be 'certain 4to occur if the port F werev -turnefhas in that cose the coller might slip wholly ,or partially out before being tightened,A it will be seen thst'this arrangement of thoparts'constitutcs en importent "feature of our invention. In no cane docs' either portion: of thetubeAj'or B require to b'e tiirned, the turning 'of-tho ellsx Lnlcue being necessary to closo the joint. Thus all twisting of the hose is entirelyuvoidcd, und the coupling elfe-ated in o. inost speedy und certain manner, It will ,be observed that the pnrts A and B nre 'euch of them somewhat reduced in circumference at tho points o, by having their outer surfuccjcu'tnwny there, so us -to form :in inclined.surface-which is largest toward the outer Aend. On this inclined surface a screwthrea'd is cut, as shown. A ring, b, of proper size to slip over vthe tube isprOvided, this ring being mode tapering, to correspond with the inclined orl tapering portion of the tubes, and has n scrow-thrcsdcut on its interior surface. The ring?) beiugrst slipped on to the tube, the hose C is then lforced on until'its eudlcovers the inclined sur- .ince on. the tube, when Vthe ring b 'is brought beek ovorits end und screwed tight, thus compressing nd securing the hosetightly between the ring and th'e tube. `'.lhe ring b hnslugs, with which to turn it, as represented in lig. By this menus the hose con be quickly-ond securelyfnstened to the coupling, or detnched therefrom, ne muy be desired. v `1 Itis obvious thutths mnnnor of uniting the pipe or hose tu thc coupling maybe used iu `ull 'cites where'it 4isdesired to unito hose to :my kind tof I metal pipe. InstcmLof having the projection D'egrtend half-weyronnd. vvun in this cose,it muy consistsiniply `of lugsl on .opposite-4 sides, with n lug-fut' the bottom side to prevent the Having thus described our invention, what we claim. is-f 1. The tube A, provided with the projecting lipvF, having a. groove, n, formed therein, in combination with the/libe B, having the collar E provided with the flange ve thereon, when said parte are arranged to operate as M4dfor the purpose set forth. l I 4 2.' We' claim securing the hose to Athe tubes' .by means of the inclined surfaces and/che ringe b, constructed and arranged tc operate as set forth. V 5 I WILLIAM JOHN OSBOURNE,
