STATES N'rn T 'ATEN'I OFFICE.-
FREDERICK \VILLIAM CHEETHAM, OF HYDE, ENGLAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,456, dated June 6, 1899.
Original application filed November 26, 1898, Serial No. 697,431. Divided and this application filed March 22, 1899. Serial No. 710,064. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WILLIAM CHEETHAM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Norbury House, I-Iyde, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vork-I-Iolders for Sewin g-Machin es, of which the following is a specification, and for which I have made application for patents in Great Britain, No. 12,709, dated June '7, 1898; in Austria, filed September 17, 1898; in Belgium, filed September 19,1898; in France, filed August 22, 1898; in Germany, filed September 17, 1898, and in Italy, filed September23,1898.
My invention relates to improvements in work-holders for sewingunachines for makin g hat-linings; and it consists in improved means for holding the tip or central portion of the lining on the turn-table.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan View, the latter partly in section, of a sewing-macl1ine embodying my improvements. Fig. 1 is an end .elevation of the turn-table. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the top or central portion of the hat lining and its backing. Fig. 4: is a similar view illustrating the form assumed by the parts when the tip is clamped on the turntable, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the slotted backing for the tip.
In the drawings,1 is the bed-plate and frame of the machine; 2,the cloth-plate or feedtable; 3,the stitch-regulator 4,the plaiting-plate; 5, the spring-shaft, and 6 the driving'shaft.
12, 13,14, 15, and 16 show parts of the mechanism for transmitting the motion from the driving-shaft 6 to the spring-controlled shaft 5, which carries the plaiting-blade 4. As this mechanism forms the subject-matter of an application for Letters Patent of the United States, Serial No. 697,431, filed November 25, 1898, and of which the present application is a division, it Will not be necessary to refer to said parts, as they form no part of the present invention.
In carrying out my invention I mount the tip orcentral portion 19 of the hat-linin g upon a backing or foundation 20, of paper or other suitable material, which is slitted at midwidth at 21, Figs. 3 and 5, to receive one-half or other part of the clamping-plate 22,which is pivoted at 23 at mid-Width to the turn-table 9 and is clamped over the paper backing 20 by a pivoted wedge 24, moved by a handle 25. By this means the tip or central portion 19 of the lining is held upon the turn-table 9, ready for the side lining 17 to be attached to it,without the use of pins, as now customary, and thus I avoid the unsightly holes hitherto made in the tip by the pins ordinarily employed to secure it to corks in the turn-table.
I claim In combination, the turn-table, means for holding the top of the hat-lining to the turm table comprisinga clamping-plate pivoted at its middle to the turn-table and having its edge arranged to clamp the lining between itself and the turn-table, and means for form ing the edge of the clamping-plate toward the turn-table and holding the same in this position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
FREDERICK WILLIAM CIIEE'IIIAM.

H. BARLOW, HERBERT R. ABBEY.
