TO AIL WHOM IT MA.Y CONCERN: 4
Bo it known Vthat I, CYnUs Cn'orrnn; of' the city of Cincinnati, county of Hamilton, and State of Ohio, have invented a new improved Paper-Cutting Machine; and I do ,declare thatthc following ia a full, clear, und exact description of the construction und operation of the sume, reference being had to the annexed drawings, mu'king a. port ofthis specification, in which- -Figure 1 is a perspective view'.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal elevation. l
Figui-e3 is a. detail front vieu of com for oscillating the knife.
A, iig. 1, represents the table o f machine. :B B the sides or legs. C the knife-bur.A D the pressure-bnr, fr holdin gA thel paper firm. E the screw operating the pressure-bar. Fis a slotted end of the knife-bar, in which the com or eccentric-G work to produce the oscillating motioirof the knife. H is a. pair of bevelled pinions, meshing into each other and uponthe opposite end of the shaft. M i .a pair of `similari wheels, communicating the motion from the eheft K, upon the end of which ure the ily-wheel and crank vJ', P P are the slots or guides in the upright side-SrL L,
in which the kuife-barslides N is a rackfsttaehed to the end of s. rod, 0l with a smell pinion meshing in it; thin Ain todraw' the knife-bar down, and While it is being drawn down the bar is moved laterallyto andfro by means of the bevelled pinions nucl the eccentric or cam G. fII Z are spnr-whcel'sund pinions, so arranged as to goin power in operatingvthe knife. Fig. 42, a is an vextension-joint or swi'velQfo'r tl\e purpose of regulating the position of the knife should the knife be ground o'r set unevenly invthe machine, viz, one end higher than the other. This extension-joint admita of its adjustment, a, being mndewith-a screw-thread cut ineach end, -on'd the rod O being in two pieces, with screw-thread on the Vends, which threads must be right-and left, so that by' turning the joint A the length of the rod is extended orcontracted. Fig. 3, G- is the cam or eccentric that Tn operate the machine, the pressure-bar is raised bymeans of the screw 'Material Yto be cut is then placed in the proper position on the table A, and the pressure-bar brought down upon it to hold it iirm. By turning theilyfwheel J, the knife is lthen brought down upon and through the paper with n lateral to-and-fro motion, cut't-ingthe paper readily. The motion of the knife is indicated with dotted lines :c x.
What I claim as nemend desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I I 1. Thejknifc, operated laterally to and fro, nt the same time it is descending. by menus of a. cam or eceen'- trie working in e. elot in one ond of the knife-ban, substantially and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. The rack and pinion, for the purpose of drawing down and raising the knife, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The adjustable joint -a in the rod O, forthe purpose of regulating the position of the knife C, substnntally as herein set forth;
. In testimony of which I hereunto set my hand.
O YRUS. CROPPER.
