Description

No. 625,264. Patented May [6, I899. F. HOFFMANN & w. OHLSEN. ELECTRIC HAND FUSE FOB GAS BURNEBS.
(Application filed Nov. 19, 1897.)
(No Model.)
THE mums mus 00,. mnraumm wamns'ran, 04 a UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRIEDRICH HOFFMANN AND WILHELM OHLSEN, OF KIEL, GERMANY.
ELECTRIC HAND-FUSE FOR GAS-BURNERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,264, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed November 19, 1897. Serial No. 659,154. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRIEDRICH HOFF- MANN, agent, and WILHELM OHLsEN,engineer, of Kiel, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Hand- Fuses for Gas-Burners; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and ex act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention provides for the ignition of the gas by a movable igniting-tube which is attached to the cock and in the operation of turning on the gas is turned past the main gas-burner and at the same time past a sparking-contact, so as to ignite the gas passing through same and in turn ignite the burner and then to pass away from the burner and be turned off as the cock is turned to the full-on position. The advantage of this construction is that it is very simple and prevents injury to the auxiliary-burner tube by the heat of the main burner, as such tube is removed from proximity to the main burner when the latter is turned full on.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a gas-burner with our lighting attachment. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is an elevation at right angles to Fig. 1, showing in dotted lines the two extreme positions of the auxiliary-burner tube and in full lines the middle or igniting position of such tube. Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views of the cook.
The main-burner tube, whose channel is indicated at a in Fig. 2, has the usual valve or cock 0, controlling by its channel a the passage of gas through same, and to this cock is attached the auxiliary-burner tube b,whereto the gas is admitted by a channel 0, formed in the cock 0 and cooperating with suitable ports in the seat of the cock, so as to cut oif such communication when the main cock-aperture is in either thefull-offorfull-on position, but to open it at an intermediate p0- sitionnamely, at the moment when the end of the tube b is passing the main burner. At this moment a contact I) on the said auxiliary tube 1) passes and makes contact with a fixed contact d on a stationary post d, affixed to the main burner, thus closing an electric circuit. This results in a spark, which ignites the gas issuing from the auxiliary burner, and the latter then in turn ignites the main burner. The small jet issuing from the auxiliary burner is much more readily and certainly ignited than the main jet would be directly.
Having thus described our invention, the following is what we claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination with a gas-burner and a valve 0 having a channel a controlling the access of gas thereto and having an additional channel 0', of an auxiliary-burner tube,
carried by said valve 0 and having the access.
of gas thereto controlled by said channel 0, a contact on the auxiliary-burner tube and a fixed contact engaging therewith, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof we hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses- FRIEDRICH HOFFMANN. WILHELM OHLSEN. Witnesses:
THEODR. REUTER, HERM. STIJTZEE.
