NAPOLEON EDlVARD BEAUDOIN, OF JERSEY CITY, NElV JERSEY.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,239, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed September '7, 1898. Serial No. 690,403. (No model.)
1 BEAUDOIN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a toy of a class which requires skilful manipulation of the device to attain a desired result, and thus conduce to the amusement of the operator.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of one main portion of the toy. Fig. 2 is a detached side view of the remaining portion of the toy. Fig. 3 is a partly-sectional side view of the two parts of the toy in loose connection with each other, and Fig. 4.- is a partly-sectional plan view essentially on the line 4 4c inFig. 1.
The device in part consists of a fiat-bottomed pan A, having a low border flange a around the edge, said pan being shown circular in form, but may have a differently-shaped edge, if preferred. At a suitable point, preferably near the center of the pan, a vertical perforation is formed in it for the reception of a post B, that is preferably cylindrical in its body and has its upper portion tapered to a blunt point b.
' The post Bis held in place by the frictional contact of its body within the wall defining the perforation in the pan A; but said engagement of parts is such as will permit the post to be raised or lowered, so as to locate the point I) at a suitable distance from the bottom wall of the pan A, as will be further explained.
The remaining portion of the toy comprises a base-block O, that may with advantage be formed as shown in the drawings, having a cylindrical body tapered at the upper portion and flat on the bottom.
A staif D, carrying a small flag E, preferably the United States colors, is fixed in the top of the base-block O, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and axially coincident with the flag- The base-block O has sufficient weight to insure the vertical support of the staff D and flag E when said block is seated upon a level surfaceas, for example, upon the upper fiat face of the pan A. The toy is operated for amusement as follows: The operator takes the pan A in one hand and holdsv it level, or nearly so, with the base-block O seated thereon at a selected point. By dexterous jolting manipulation the player strives to throw the base-block and attachments thereon upwardly and in direction of the point I) of the post B, so as. to effect a lodgment of the base-block on the pinnacle of the post, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, whereby the flagstatf D is positioned vertically and the flag E is outwardly spread.
In will be seen that it requires considerable dexterity of hand and judgment as to distance to successfully manipulate the novel toy. Furthermore, the provision made for adjusting the post 13 so as to raise or lower its point 1) with regard to the surface of the pan A increases the difficulty of successfully tossing the base-block and flag so as to deposit the block on the point b, as stated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A toy, comprising a post having its upper end tapered, a pan whereon the post is erected, a free weighty block having a perforation and normally seated in the pan, but adapted to rest upon the tapered end of the post when tossed from the pan so asto receive said end of the post within the perforation thereof, substantially as described.
2. A toy, comprising a pan, a post adjustable for height on the pan and having a tapered upper end, and a base-block perforated in the bottom to engage with the top of the post, said base-block carrying a staff and flag at the lower end, and a flagstaff and flag prothereon, substantially as described. jecting from the top of the base-block, sub- :0
3. The combination with a flat-bottomed stantially as described. pan, and a cylindrical post adjustable for 7 height in a perforation of the pan, said post NAPOLEON ARD BEAUDOIA' being tapered toward the upper end, of a WVitnesses: I weighty base-block Vertically perforated in JAMES THOMAS SULLIVAN, its flat bottom, said perforation being cupped HERBERT DUNZEE MEEKER.
