PAPER-REGISTERING INSTRUMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,095, dated May 1e, 1899.. Application filed January 16, 1899. Serial No. 702,265. (No model.)

Be it known that I, TALBOT C. DEXTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pearl River, in the count)7 of Rockland, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Paper-Registering Instruments, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to the class of automatic paper-registering devices which are usually designated point-feed registering and which effect the registering of the paper by means of a pin or point entering a slit or perforation made in the paper preparatory to registering the same; and the invention relates more particularly to the form of the registering pin or point and to the means for operating the same. v
The object of the invention is to simplify the construction and at the same time insure the ef ciency of said registering devices; and to that end the invention consists of a vertically-movable registering-pin provided with a conical or analogous tapered point to enter into the perforation in the paper and suspended from its support to allow said point to yield horizontally to its contact with the edge of the perforation and means 'restoring the entered pin to its vertical position, and thereby pushing the paper to registering position; and the invention also consists in novel devices for operating said registering-pin, all as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.

Transversely over the paper-supporting bars a' a is a stationary bar b, secured at its ends to standards b', fastened to the sides of the frame A. On said transverse bar are mounted two riders c, which are sustained laterally adjustable -in relation to the su'bjacent paper-supporting bars a by means of screws d, disposed parallel with the bar b and pass- Y ing through the screW-threadedears d', rigidly The outer ends of said screws are journaled in suitable hearings on the frame A and provided with handwheels d2, bywhichto turnthe screws. These screws may be coupled together, as represented at cl3, when desired to operate the two screws simultaneously. To each of the riders is secured a horizontal arm N, which eX- tends toward the folding-rollers B B, and on each of these arms is mounted a bracket O, which4 is adjustable longitudinally thereon. To this bracket is pivoted a bell-crank c, from the Vhorizont-al arm of which issuspended the registering-pin P, which ispreferably of cylindrical shape and formed with a conical point I on its lower end and is preferably provided with a disk f, of rubber or other suitable material, immediately above said point. Between the under side of the aforesaid arm of the bell-crank and a shoulder f on the pin is interposed a spiral spring e', which serves to transmit downward pressure from the bell-crank to the pin P. The downward movement of said arm is lim- IOO ited, preferably, by means of a set-screw e2, adjustably connected to an ear projecting from the side of the bracket O, which set-screw is in the path of the aforesaid arm, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. From the side of the bracket O projects also a shoulder g, against which the pin P rests when in its vertical or normal position. At the opposite side of said pin is a jaw g, which slides in horizontal guides h h, attached to the bracket O. To this jaw is connected a rod h', which passes through a guide h2, preferably attached to the shoulder g. To this rod is connected a pitman p, which receives intermittent reciprocating motion from a rockarm pattached to a rock-shaft p2, to the end of which is attached a lever p3, which is actuated by a rotary cam r, shaped to impart the properly-timed rocking motion to said lever. By means of the aforesaid pitman the jaw g' is caused to move at predetermined intervals toward and from the shoulder g for the purpose hereinafter explained.
A spiral spring j is suitably arranged to actuate the bellcrank in a direction which causes the pin P to be lowered to enter it into a circular perforation in the underlying paper, which is supported thereat by a plate a2, adjustably supported between two of the bars a', and is provided with a slot a3 for the passage of the point P in entering the aforesaid perforation.
To actuate the bell-crank e to lift the pin P from the paper, Iypreferably attach to the rod h a tappet c', which engages a lug or pin t" on the vertical arm of the bell-crank.
In order to move the jaw g from the shoulder g, and thus prevent said jaw from gripping the pin P in advance of the lifting of said pin, I place the tappet in a position to produce the necessary lost motion between the jaw g' and bell-crank e.
The operation of the described registering instrument in conjunction with the paperfolding machine is as follows: The paper is carried into the machine by the tapes c; a and arrested by the front stop or gage E in the usual and well-known manner. The arrested paper is then automatically shifted laterally to side-register, which shifting may be effected by any suitable registering device. Its location is indicated by dotted lines o in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and its form may be similar to the gripper shown in my Letters Patent No. 599,319, dated February 22, 1898, and operated in a similar manner. Vhen the paper is thus side-registered, the circular perforations in the paper are under the two registering-pins P P, which have been in the meantime sustained in their elevated position by the bell-cranks e. The pitmenp then move in a direction to release the bell-cranks from the tappets and allow said bell-cranks to be actuated by the springs j, which tilts the bellcranks so as to lower the pins P P and enter the conical or tapering points P P thereof Ninto: the perforations in the paper. In entering said perforations the contact of the beveled sides of the points P/ P with the front edges of the perforations crowds the lower ends of the pins rearward, and thereby throws the said pins out of their vertical or normal position, as represented by dotted lines in Fig. 8 of the drawings. A further movement of the pitmen p in the aforesaid direction draws the jaws g forward sufficiently to cause them to push the pins into vertical or normal position. (Shown in full lines in Fig. 8 of the drawings.) This latter movement of the registering-pins P P pushes the paper into its longitudinal registering position. As soon as this registering is completed the two pitmen p first push the jaws g out of engagement with the registering-pins P P and then tilt the bell-cranks e e, so as to lift said pins out of the paper. The folding-blade then tucks the paper into the bite of the foldingrollers B B, which draw the paper down between them and impart the first fold to the paper in the usual and well-known manner.
The described registering instrument may be located to carry the registering-pin P in proximity to or directly over the bite of the folding-rollers B B, as represented in Figs. 9 and 10 of the drawings, in which case the pin P is to be formed with an oifset P2 to permit the bracket O to be placed out of the way of the folding-blade C, which is to be provided with an opening Z (shown in Fig. 11 of the drawings) for the passage of the lower end portion of the pin P. The upper end portion of the pin is squared, as shown atP3, to fit to the adjacent side of the shoulder g, and thus prevent the pin from turning.
I do not limit myself to the details of construction herein illustrated and described, as it is obvious that they are susceptible of many modifications.
The salient feature of my present invention is the registering-pin provided with a conical or analogous tapering point 4for entering into the perforation in the paper and capable of yielding laterally or in a horizontal direction, and thus guiding itself into the perforation in the paper to be registered, and suitable means for automatically restoring the entered pin toits normal or erect position, and thereby shifting the paper to registering position.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A paper-registering instrument comprising a vertically-movable pin having its lower end shaped to enter a perforation in the pa- 'per and supported yielding in a horizontal direction to guide itself into the perforation and become thereby displaced from its normal position, and means restoring the entered pin to its normal position and thereby pushing thel paper to registering position.
2; A paper-registering instrument consisting of a lvertically-movable pin provided with a tapered point to enter into a perforation in the paper and suspended from its support to allow said point to yield horizontally to its contact with the edge of the perforation, and

3. In combination with the paper-conveying tapes, a stationary bracket, a verticallyinovable registering pin carried on said bracket and having its lower end free to yield laterally and tapered to enter a perforation in the paper and become displaced from its normal position by the contact of the taper of the pin With a portion of the edge of the perforation, and means restoring the entered pin to its normal position and thereby pushing the sheet to registering position as set forth.
4. In combination with the paper-convey.- ing tapes and front stop, a stationary bracket, a lever pivoted to said bracket, mechanism imparting intermittent rocking motion to said lever, a paper-registering pin suspended from said lever and provided with a tapering point for entering' a perforation in the paper and becoming thereby thrown out of vertical position and means restoring the entered pin to its vertical position and thereby pushing the paper to registering position as set forth.
5. In combination With the paper-conveying tapes and front stop, astationary bracket, a lever pivoted to said bracket, mechanism imparting intermittent rocking motion to said lever, apaper-registering pin suspended from said lever and provided with a tapering point for entering a perforation in the paper and becoming thereby thrown out of vertical position, a disk secured to the pin immediately above the aforesaid point, and means'restoring the pin to its vertical position and thereby pushing the paper to registering position as set forth.
6. In combination With the paper-conveying tapes and front stop, a stationary bracket, a lever pivoted to said bracket, mechanism imparting intermittent rocking motion to said lever, a registering-pin suspended from said lever and provided with a conical point for entering a perforation in the paper and becoming thereby thrown out of vertical position, a stationary shoulder on the bracket and disposed to bear on one side of the pin When in its vertical position, a jaw on the bracket at the opposite side of the pin and y movable to and from the same and means moving said jaw to push to the stationary shoulder the pin entered into the perforation in the paper as set forth.
7. In combinationwith the paper-conveying tapes and front stop, a stationary bracket, a bell-crank pivoted to said bracket, a registering-pin suspended from the horizontal arm of said bell-crank, a stationary shoulder on the bracket at one side of said pin, a jaw on said bracket at the opposite side of the pin and movableto and from the same, a spring actuating the bell-crank to lower the registering-pin, a stop limiting said action of the bell-crank, a pitman connected to the aforesaid jaW and means transmitting motion from the pitman to the bell-crank in opposition to its aforesaid actuating-spring and having lost motion to move the jaw from the registering-pin in advance of the action of the bell-crank to lift said pin substantially as Set forth.
