H. E. WINDRATH. HYGIENIC HEADREST.
(No Model.)

NITE
HERMANN EMIL IVINDRATH, OF AIX-LA-OHAPELLE, GERMANY.
HYGIENIC HEAD-REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,717, dated May 9, 1899.
Application filed October 9, 1897.
T0 alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN EMIL WIND- BATH, ofAix-la-Ohapelle, in the District of Aix-la-Ohapelle, Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Rests, of which the following is a complete specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to produce an improved head-rest for barber's chairs and the like that is designed to promote cleanliness and afford protection to the occupant of the chair from infectious skin diseases.
Chairs ordinarily employed by hair-dressers and barbers, for example, in their business are provided with rests that are usually adjustable and are designed to support the head and neck of an occupant of the chair. Such head-rests are used for all comers and are not only objectionable to persons of fastidious tastes, but in some instances serve, as is confirmed by medical opinion, as the vehicle of communication of disease from one occupant of the chair to another.
By my invention a head-rest of the kind referred to is provided with a superficial covering which may be changed for each customer, thereby affording a clean and unused support for the head of each new occupant.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of a portion of a chair provided with my head-rest, showing an occupant seated in the chair. Fig. II is a front View of the head-rest detached, showing the outer layer or covering partially removed. Fig. III is a sectional View on the line A B Fig. IV is a side elevation of the subject-matter of Fig. II. Fig. .V is a lower edge View of Fig. II, looking upwardly. Fig. V1 is a section on the line C D of Fig. 'II.
Referring to the figures on the drawings, 1 indicates the head-rest support or framepiece, which is of any suitable shape, dimensions, and contour and made of any suitable material-for example, wood. It is adapted to be attached to a chair by any suitable. means-for example, a hinge connectionE- whereby it may be adjusted upon a chair in use. I
The inner face of the frame 1 is provided, preferably around its upper edge, with an inturned flange 3 and on the lower side with suitable fastening mechanism-for instance, screw-clamps or buttons 4. The flange 3 and the fastening mechanism (represented by the Serial no 654,718. (No model.)
elements 4:) are designed to detachably support a suitable protective covering for the frame 1.
I prefer to construct the covering with a base 5 of stiff material-as, for example,cardboard-that fits under the flange 3 and may be secured thereto, as by the clamps 4. The base 5 carries a series of layers 6 of suitable material, preferably sheets of paper or parchment, which afford a cushion upon the headrest frame 1. Thebase 5,with its layers 6, constitutes What may be called a pad or cushion for the head. Each individual layer may be so prepared that no moisture, as of perspiration or the like, can penetrate it, so that only the topmost sheet is afiected in use. By this arrangement the top layer of paper may be removed after it has been once used and the next succeeding layer of the series presented for use until each layer of the series has been exhausted, when the base 5 may be removed and a new base, with its layers of paper, inserted in place.
The sheets of paper upon the base 5 may be of any desired shape; but I prefer to provide them with a depending tailpiece, which, falling over the upper portion of the back of the chair to which the head-rest is attached, may serve as a protection for the neck as well as for the head of the occupant of the chair.
As a means of puttinga check on the amount ofwork done by the operators the sheets of each pad may be consecutively numbered. Each sheet as it is stripped off with its number attached indicates that the chair has been occupied and the workman is therefore chargeable for its use.
What I claim is 1. As a part of a head-rest, a frame provided on one side witha retaining-flange, and onthe opposite side with buttons to securely hold a pad in position, substantially as set forth.
2. In ahead-rest pad, the combination with a base, of a plurality of superimposed layers,
each of the layers being provided with a tail piece constituting a neck protection, sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony of all which I have hereunto subscribed my name.
HERMANN EMIL VVINDRATH.
