SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,644, dated May 9, 1899.

Be it known that we, ST. JULIAN GIRARDEAU, VIRGINIUS DAVIS THOMPSON, and ROBERT LYLES BEAL, citizens of the United States, residing at Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Sewing-Machine Attachment, of which the following is a specification.

machines, and more particularly to a motive power for operating the said machine, the ob.- ject being to provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and efficient hand-power which can be used independent of orin conjunction with the foot-treadle.

Another object of the invention is to provide a mechanism which can be applied to any of the sewing-machines now in use and can be adjusted to suit the various sizes of machines.

With these objects in view our invention consists, essentially, of a clamp adapted to be attached to the table of the sewing-machine, an adj ustable lever pivoted to said clamp, and a pitman adapted to be connected to the drivewheel of the machine and adjustably connected with the lever, the reciprocation of said lever causing the rotation of the drive-Wheel.

The invention consists also in certain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the end elevation of a machine provided with our attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the operating-lever. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the clamp to which said lever is pivoted. Fig. 4 is a sectional view of said clamp, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 f Fig. 2.

In carrying out our invention we employ a clamp-bracket A, essentially in the shape of an open rectangle and having a set-screw A working through one member thereof, the inner faces of the members and the set-screw being covered with rubber or other suitable material A the surface of which is roughened in order to bind tightly upon the edge of the machine-table when said bracket is clamped thereto, as shown in Fig. 1.
