GEORGE S. GALLAGHER, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR, BY DIRECT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO ZILLIAII B. GALLAGHER, HENRY F. GALLAGHER, EMMA G. GALLAGHER, AND JULIUS M. .FAIRCHILD, OF SAME PLACE.
COPY-HOLDER FOR TYPE-WRITING MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,641, dated May 9, 1899.
' Application filed May 12, 1898. Serial No. 680,447. (No model.) i
T (1. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GALLAGHER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Copy-Holders for Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In many type-writing machines the sheet of paper upon which the impression is made I0 is passed around a roller above the circular range of types that are thrown up successively by the action of the keys and the copy either in the form of manuscript or stenographic notes has been held upon a plate or [5 other support at the side of the type-writing machine.
The object of the present invention is to support the copy immediately tDOVGthG typewriting machine, so as to be more easily ob- :0 served by the type-writer and to be near the sheet that is being written on, so that they can easily be compared, and the copy-holder is supported with reference to allowing the typewriting machine to be actuated in the usual mannerthat is to say, for the rolleraround which the sheet passes to be swung back to examine the writing from time to time-and when this is done the copy-holder is moved to the rear, and when the roller of the type- 0 writing machine is returned to its normal position the copy-holderis restored to its position for convenient examination.
In carrying out this invention a jointed column is made use of containing an adjustable pivot-rod that can be raised or lowered and also swung around laterally, and the copyholder in the form of a plate or similar support is upon an arm extending out from a joint, and the copy-holder is supported upon 40 a roller or bar connected with the carriage for the roller upon the type-writing machine, so that such carriage can move, as usual, beneath the copy-holder, and when the carriage is swung up for examining the writing the 4 5- cOpy-holderis carried to the rear, the two joints allowing for the swinging motion in carrying the copy-holder to the rear, as well as when such copy-holder is restored to its normal position.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View, partially in section, of the improved copyholder, illustrating the position of the same in'relation to the type-writing machine; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation.
The socket A can be either attached upon the type-writing machine or upon the table or bed supportingthe same, and this socket A has a vertical hole adapted to receive the base of the two-part column B B, so that the column and the parts carried by it can be lifted out from the socket and rem oved or replaced, as desired. This gives facility for connecting the copy-holder in place or for removing the same when the'machine is to be covered or housed.
The column B B is provided with the hinge O, that connects the two parts, and this hinge is advantageously made as a stop-hinge, so that the upper part of the column will be ar rested when in line with the lower part; but the upper part of the column can be swung to the rear whenever desired, and there is a spring 2, that tends to bring the parts of the column into linewith each other. This spring may be of wire coiled around the pivot of the stop-hinge and having one arm extending upward and the other downward to act against the respective parts of the column.
The upper part B of the column is tubular to receive the vertical rod or pivot D, which carries the other parts of the copy-holder, and this rod D can be raised or lowered in the tubular portion B of the column, and there is a collar E,with a screw 3, by which it is clamped upon the rod D at any desired point after raising or lowering such rod D and the copy holder carried by it, and it is advantageous to provide a key or projection A upon the upper end of the column B, entering a notch in the under side of the collar E when the parts 0 of the copy-holder are'in position for use; but by lifting the rod D sufficient to separate the key 4 from the groove or notch in the collar E the copy-holder can be turned aside upon the vertical rod B as a pivot.
At the upper end of the rod D is a hinge 5, I by which the arm F is connected to the rod D, and thisarm F carries at its end the copyholder G, which is preferably in the form of a plate having a bottom ledge or support 6 for sustaining the copy, and this holder may be of any desired size or character. The arm F is preferably of wire passing through a hole in the hinge-piece 5, there being a screw 7, by which the wire of the arm can be clamped,
and such wire arm can be moved one way or.
parent that the arm F can be bent more or less in bringing the copy-holder to the proper position in relation to the type-writing machine.
It is generally advantageous for the copyholder to be immediately over the type-writ ing machine and central to the same, and it also should be supported so that it will not vibrate by the action of the type-writing machine. With. this object in view a bar or rod H is supported over the rear portion of the carriage L, and a roller I upon the back and lower portion of the copy-holder rests upon this rod H. Any suitable means may be made use of for securing this rod H to the carriage in the type-writing machine. I have shown and prefer to use the clips K, that are adapted to grasp the carriage or frame L of the typewriting machine at their lower ends, there being screws 9 to tighten the clips, and by providing alower rod H, preferably square, passing through theclips K, these clips can be placed nearer to or farther from each other, according to the convenience in the attachment of the rod to the type-writing machine, and when each clip is made in two parts, as represented, the screw tightens such clip upon the rod H, as well as upon the frame or carriage of the type-writing machine.
When the frame or carriage of the type-writing machine is raised and swung back, the rods H and H and the clips are carried with it, and the rod H, acting upon the roller I, carries the copy-holder G bodily to the rear, and the upper part B of the column swings on the hinge O, and the parts also turn more or less upon the hinge 5, so that the copy-holder does not interfere with the type-writer in the examination of the typewritten matter, and
when the carriage of the type-writing machine is swung down to position for use the parts are restored and the weight of the copy-holder and copy is taken by the rod H, but such rod H moves backward and forward in operating the type-writing machine.
At M a portion of the rear of a type-writing machine is indicated, and when desired a spring-finger 0 may be provided to steady or hold the copy-book or manuscript on the plate or holder G, as shown in Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention- 1. The two-part column B B and connecting-hinge O, in combination with the socket A by which such column is supported, the rod D received into the upper part of the column, the copy-holder and arm F and the hinge by which the arm is connected to the upper end of the rod, and a collar and screw for sustaining the weight of the parts and allowing for their vertical adjustment, substantially as set forth.
2. The two-part column B B and connecting-hinge O in combination with the socket A by which such column is supported, the rod D received into the upper part of the col- 11 mn, the copy-holder and arm F and the hinge by which the arm is connected to the upper end of the rod and a collar and screw. for sustaining the weight of the parts and allowing for their vertical adjustment, a key upon the upper end of the column and a notch in the collar for retaining the copy-holder in position horizontally, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with the copy-holder and an arm, of a column and a hinge connecting the column and the arm, a roller upon the copy-holder and a horizontal rod connected with the type-writing machine and upon which the roller rests, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with the copy-holder and its arm, of a column and hinge to connect the arm and column, a roller upon the copyholder, a rod upon which the roller rests and clips for connecting the rod and the type-writing machine, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 10th day of May, 1898.
