BOOT OR SHOE JACK.

Be it known that we, CHARLES FREDMAN and JAMES HALLAS, citizens of the United States, residing at New Hamburg, in the county of Dutchess and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot or Shoe Jacks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to devices for use in placing overshoes on the feet; and the object thereof is to provide an improved combination device of this class which may be placed in a hall or other convenient location and which in addition to being used for the purpose above specified is also designed for use as an umbrella rack or holder.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a perspective view of the device which forms the subject of this application.

In the practice of our invention we provide a base-plate or support 5, the ends of which are supported by or rest upon cross strips or bars 6, which are secured to the bottom of the said base plate or board, and secured to the rear of said base plate or board is a standard 7, the upper end of which is provided with outwardly and forwardly curved arms 8. The base plate or board 5 is provided with an opening 9, having cross plates or bars 10, and in practice a pan or suitable receptacle is inserted beneaththe base plate or board under the opening 9, said pan or receptacle being adapted to receive the drip from umbrellas and other substances passing through the opening 9. The said pan or receptacle is not shown in the drawing for the reason that it forms no part of this invention, and mounted in front of the opening 9 and secured to the The object of this device is to aid in placing an overshoe on the foot, and for this purpose the cross-head 13 is placed in the heel of the overshoe so that the toe of the shoe projects forward, and by grasping the arms 8 of the standards and leaning forward the toe of the foot may be passed into the toe of the overshoe and the heel thereof forced downwardly in to the heel of the overshoe, the segmentallycurved cross-head 13 serving to facilitate this operation, and then by depressing the crosshead 15, which is pivotally connected with the front end of the lever 12, the segmental head 13 will be drawn from between the heel of the shoe and the heel of the overshoe, as will be readily understood.

This device is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and in using the same as an umbrella-holder the ferrule end of the umbrella-stick is inserted into the opening 9 between the plates or bars 10, while the handle thereof rests in the yokeshaped holder formed by the arms 8 of the standard 7.

Having fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a device of the class herein described, a base-plate provided with devices for placing an overshoe on the foot, consisting of a pivotally-supported lever, the rear end of i which is provided with a segmentally-curved cross-head, and the front end of which is provided with a depending cross-head which is pivotally connected therewith and suspended therefrom, substantially as shown and de scribed.

2. In a device of the class herein described, a baseplate provided with supports at each end and with an opening formed therein, said base-plate being also provided in front of said opening with means for placing an overshoe on the foot consisting of a pivotally-supported lever the rear end of which is provided with a segmentally curved cross head, and the front end of which is provided with a depend ing cross-head which is pivotally connected therewith and suspended therefrom, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a device of the class herein described, a base-plate and devices connected therewith for placing an overshoe'on the foot, said means consisting of a pivotally-supported lever, the rear end of which is provided with a segmentally-curved cross-head, and means for oper'-' ating said lever, substantially as shown and described.

4. A device of the class herein described, comprising a base plate provided with an opening having cross plates or bars, a handhold at the rear endof the base-plate, and devicesfor placing an overshoe on the foot, consisting of a pivotally-supported lever, the rear end of which is provided with a segmentallycurved cross-head and the front end of which is provided with a depending cross head 15 which is pivotally connected therewith and suspended therefrom, substantially as shown and described.
