UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. HUSSEY, OF PROVIDENCE, RI-IODE ISLAN D.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent K056243365, dated May 2, 1899. s 7
Application filed April 14, 1898. Serial No. 677,529. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. HUSSEY, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to the manner of constructing brushes, more particularly to the mode of holding the bristles or their equivalents in the brushes. It is fully explained and illustrated in this specification and the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents a cross-section of a brush, showing the general arrangement of the holding-tubes and the bristles. Fig. 2 shows one of the tubes for holding the bristles separate. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the center of one of the tubes filled with bristles and secured to a plate. Fig. 4 shows another way of closing the tube on the bristles to retain them in place. Fig. 5 is a top View of the tube shown in Fig. 4.
The object of this invention is to provide a device for holding the bristles or their equivalents that can readily be attached to sheet metal to be Wrapped around a cylinder to form a roller-brush for machine use or to be secured by such plate or separately to blocks of Wood or other material to make brushes for any of the general uses they are put to.
Theconstruction and use of the parts are as follows: A tube 0, Fig. 2, is swaged ordrawn out of sheet metal, with a large part 6, made to hold the bristles c, and a reduced portion 0", by which to secure it to the plate 1;, and having a well-defined square-cornered shoulder sbetween the two parts. Then the bristles c in a tuft either doubled orcut square across the end, with or without cement, are inserted by one end into the larger portion 6 of the tube, and a groove 1' is rolled in the periphery to close the metal in on the bristles to keep them in, or the tube may be compressed with fluted corrugations, as in Figs. 4 and 5, to retain the bristles in them. This tube 0 after the bristles have been secured in it has its small part 0' put through a hole made in the plate 41 to receive it, and the lower end is opened out and clenched on the plate t after the manner of an eyelet, so as to draw the shoulder 3 down snug to the plate 4) and hold it fast.
Having thus described my improvements,.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a brush a back-plate, a plurality of tubes each having a larger portion to hold bristles, and a smaller tubular portion to secure it to the plate by spreading open and clenching on the under side of the plate, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of April, A. D. 1898.
GEORGE B. HUSSEY.
In presence of- BENJ. ARNOLD, HOWARD E. BARLOW.
