FERDINAND F. HOEI-INE, OF KAUKAUNA, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- THIRD TO GILBERT F. GERMANSON, OF LITTLE CHUTE, WISCONSIN.
SECURING METAL GUDGEONSlN WOODEN ROLLERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,212, dated May 2, 1899.
Application filed March 3, 1899. Serial No. 707,600. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND F. HoEHNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Kaukanna, in the countyof Outagamie and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Securing Metal Gudgeons in Wooden Rollers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention has for its object to insure rigid connection of wooden rollers and metallic gudgeons, as well as to prevent splitting of the rollers by the gudgeons. Therefore said invention consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts hereinafter particularly specified with reference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents an end elevation of an assemblage of parts in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 a partly-sectional view on the plane indicated by line 2 2 in the -preceding figure.
Referring by letter to the drawings, Aindicates a portion of a wooden roller, and. in practice each end of the roller is cut out to form a longitudinal annular recess 1), into which a metal stay-ring B is driven. The ring being positioned, the roller is bored and out within the confines of the ring to accommodate a series of segmental castings C, having radial wedge-like rings cl, wide enough to have their outer edges come into contact with said ring. The segmental castings being assembled together, they form a cylindrical bushing having an angular bore, and, as herein shown, it is preferable to have the in ner end of the bushing extend beyond the Wings radiating from its members in order to obtain a lead that insures of the assembled castings being driven straight into an end of the roller.
In drive fit with the bushing is the angular portion of a gudgeon D, the inner end of the same being tapered to facilitate the driving, and the roller is recessed beyond said bushing to accommodate a proportion of said gudgeon. crowds the wings d of the bushing against the stay-ring B, and the bind of the latter on said wings insures rigidity of the connection between said gudgeon and the roller, this be ing a matter of especial value in paper-making machinery having wooden rollers as eleinents thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wooden roller, a metal stay-ring inserted in an end of the roller, an angular-bore metal bushing consisting of segmental sections provided with longitudinal radial wings and fitted in said roller to have the outer edges of thewings in contact with the stay-ring, and a metal gudgeon having an angular portion in driving fit with said bushing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Kankauna, in the county of Outagamie and State of Wiscousin, in the presence of two witnesses.
FERDINAND F. HOEHNE.
