METHOD OF AND APPARATUS FOR TYPE-WRITER lNSTRUCTlON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,966, dated May 2, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. 3ARKLEY, residing at Seward, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain useful Improvements in Methods of and Apparatus for Type-Vriter Instruction; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to an improved method of and apparatus adapted to facili-' tate type-writer instruction.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple method of and apparatus to facilitate type-writer execution with the aim of acquiring speed, in that the digits of both hands are trained to operate a certain system of keys.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown in Figure 1 the outline ofa right hand provided with my indeX rings properly applied. Fig. 2 shows the outline of the left hand, the digits of which are provided with of one of the rings as removed from the operators lingers.
My invention comprises, essentially, a split or open ring of any suitable material, such as metal or celluloid, which is provided in front with a shield 5, upon which shield are provided a plurality of characters corresponding to the characters upon the keyboard of the type-writer, it being the intention of my device that my method and apparatus be used in conjunction with type-writers of any make. As stated, my invention is applicable to any make of type-writers, as it is simply neces sary to properly classify the various characters upon the machine and assign a certain series of these characters to a certain digit, the characters common to each digit being aflixed to the index-ring to be worn by that particular digit during the operation of be coming familiar with my method of type- My method consists, for instance, in taking any suitable keyboard of any desired make of type-Writer machines and then dividing the characters found in the keyboard into eight groups, these groups to be carefully determined in regard to convenience and to insure dexterity of the digits to which one of the groups of characters is made common. For instance, in an ordinary Remington typewriter I would divide the charactersinto eight groups and assign one group to each of the eight digits of an operators hands. For in stance, beginning with the little finger of the left hand I would assign to that little finger the letters \V A Z. To the next or ring finger of the left hand I would assign the letters E S X. To the middle finger of the left hand I would assign the letters R D O, and to the index-finger of the left hand the letters T F V. Beginning with the right hand, I would assign to the index-finger the letters Y G B, and to the next or middle finger the letters U H N. To the ring-finger of the right hand I would assign the letters I J M, and to the little linger of the right hand I would assign the letters 0 K The shifting of the upper case and the period and the other characters that might be used I would leave to the judgment of the operator.
Now in order to provide a means so that the operator could thoroughly familiarize hi1nself with this system I provide a series of eight rings, which are of a neat pattern and of any suitable material, such as celluloid or metal, and which are adapted to easily clamp the finger, and each ring, which is split, is provided in front with a shield of a suitable size, upon which the various letters are clearly and boldly represented. Upon the inside of the various rings may be stamped the directions showing upon which finger the ring is to be placed, so that, as stated, the first of these eight rings will be provided with the letters O K 1 The next would be provided with the characters I J M, the next being provided with the characters U H N, the next being provided with the characters Y G B, then"T F V, the next ring being provided with the letters R D O, the next having the letters E S X, and the last ring beingprovided with the letters \V A Z. These rings would be sold in sets, as has been described.
The device is neat, simple, and inexpensive and greatly facilitates the learning of the above-mentioned type-Writer system.
