UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.

GRINDING AND POLISHING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,897, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed February 17, 1898. Serial No. 670,668. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK N. GARD- NER, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Beloit, county of Rock, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Grinding and Polishing Devices, of which the following is a description.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference-letters indicate the same or corresponding parts, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved grinding or polishing device. Fig. II is an enlarged detail of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. I and illustrates the relative positions of the passage B through the periphery of the wheel A, said periphery having corrugations or indentations a the lips or flanges a and the yielding strip a Fig. III is another enlarged detail of a portion of the parts shown in Fig. I and shows the strip end or bight fastener D of the abrasive strip engaged by the screws F, which screws when turned in the winding direction pull upon the fastener D, thereby tightening the abrasive strip about the periphery of the wheel A. Fig. IV is a perspective View of my grinding or polishing strip and preferred form of strip-end fastener.
Fig. V is a Vertical transverse section of the preferred form of my strip-end fastener. Fig. VI is an enlarged detail showing one form in which the periphery of my improved wheel may be corrugated or indented.
My invention relates to grinding, polishing, or similar wheels; and it particularly relates to means whereby abrading or polishing strips may be readily fastened about or removed from the peripheries of said wheels.
The object of my invention is to remedy the defects existing in wheels of the kind described and now known in the art; and to that end it consists, first, in the combination of a wheel of'any desired dimensions, which wheel has a passage through its periphery, said passage having a flange or lip at either side, which flange or lip may be either a part of or attached to the wheel, and means of the characterhereinafterdescribed, wherebyabrading or polishing strips may be readily fastened about or removed from the periphery of the wheel by means of the passage therethrough secondly, in an abrading strip or band constructed in the manner hereinafter described, and, thirdly, in the more specific features of construction and combination appearing in the claims hereto.
Referring to the drawings, A is a wheel of any suitable length or diameter, having a passage ]3 of any suitable dimension through its face or periphery.
O is an abrading or polishing strip or 0011- tinuous band, the ends of or a bight in which are or is inserted into and permanently held by the fastener D.
To apply the band or strip 0, it is only necessary to pass the part of the band approximate to the fastener D, as at the point 6, through the passage 13, so that the fastener will fall within the enlarged portion of such passage, as shown in Figs. I and III. Then pass the remaining portion of the band over and about the periphery of the wheel. The abrading strip or band C is then secured to and drawn away from the periphery of the wheel through the passage B by means of the screw or screws F. The head or heads of the screw or screws F bears or bear against the lug or lugs and guide or guides E, and the screwthread end or ends of said screw or screws engage with the fastener D, so that when said screw or screws is or are turned in the screwing direction the fastener D is drawn away from the periphery of the wheel, thereby tightening the abrasive strip 0 about the wheel.
To remove the abrasive strip or band, it is only necessary to reverse the operation, as above described.
The fastener D may be made of any suitable form or material, but preferably in the form shown in the drawings, in which D is a piece of wood having holes d, (shown in dotted lines, Fig.V,) adapted to engage the screws F, and the slot d for the reception of the band or strip 0, the ends of or a bight in which strip or band are or is glued therein and further secured by brads or rivets 01 The periphery or face of the wheel A is provided with corrugations or indentations a to retain glue ora similar substance by means of which felt, leather, or other yielding strip a of any suitable thickness and width may be secured thereon.
I11 the drawings I have shown the ends of the strip (6 separated by the passage 13. At either side of this passage a lip or flange a, which may be a part of or attached to the wheel, is provided to prevent the yielding strip a? from being loosened from the periphery of the wheel at the edges of the passage when the abrading strip or band is removed. These lips or flanges a I prefer to project above the periphery of the wheel a distance equal or approximately equal to the thickness of the yielding strip a These lips or flanges are the essential features of my invention.
The band or strip C should be sufficiently long to be readily passed over and about the periphery of the wheel A and over the yielding strip Q The lug or lugs E may be positioned at any suitable place on the wheel, and the screw or screws F may be made to pass entirely through the fastener D and bear against the under side of the periphery of the wheel, as at the point indicated, Fig. III, by the letter a, or may simply engage the fastener D without passing therethrough.
Having thus described inyinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a grinding or polishing device, the combination of the following elements: a wheel, A, having a passage, B, through its periphery; lips or flanges, Cu, at either side of said passage; a yielding strip or pad, a; an abrasive strip or band, C, having its ends ora bight permanently fastened in a fastener, D, and means whereby said abrasive strip may be readily engaged and fastened about the periphery of the wheel, thereby encircling the yielding strip, (L3, or be readily removed therefrom; all substantially as and for the purposes described.
An abrasive strip or band, C, havingits ends or a bight permanently fastened in a fastener, D, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a yielding strip, a, an abrasive strip or band, 0, having its ends or a bight permanently fastened in a fastener D, a screw F, a fastener D adapted to be engaged by said screw, a lug or guide E, a wheel A having a passage B through its periphery, and a lip or flange a permanently attached to, or a part of, the wheel, at either side of said passage, all substantially as, and for the purpose, described.
4:. In a grinding or polishing device, the combination of the following elements, viz: a wheel A having a passage B through its periphery, a yielding strip a adapted to be passed about said periphery and its ends to be separated by the passage 13, and a lip or flange a permanently attached to, or a part of, the wheel at either side of said passage, said flange forming a part thereof, and extending beyond the periphery of the wheel a distance equal, or substantially equal, to the thickness of the yielding strip, all substantially as, and for the purposes, described.
FREDERICK N. GARDNER.
