CIRCULATION OF WATER IN CYLINDER-JACKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,869, dated April 25, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ENRICO BERNARDI, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Padua, Italy, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in the Circulation of WVater in Cylinder-Jackets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device by which the reservoir containing the water which serves for circulating around the cylinders of gas-engines, air-compressors, and the like for the purpose of cooling the same admits of being placed below the cylinder without the necessity of employing a pump for producing such circulation, which in devices of the ordinary kind, where the water is placed above, takes place by reason of the difference of density between the cold water and the heated water.
This improved device is represented in the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic View illustrative of my invention, and Fig. 2 a detail view showing a modification.

The water which is introduced into the chest D fills the reservoir 13, the tubes 5 and t, and thejacket a. If under these conditions the products resulting from the combustion taking place in the cylinder escapes direct to the outside, the water contained in jacket a .and in the chest D will become heated to boiling temperature without heating the water contained in the reservoir B, and consequently no circulation whatever will take place. A portion of the exhaust from the motor, however, passes through the tube to z x into the chest 0 at a pressure higher than that of the atmosphere and lifts the clackvalve, which latter as it redescends upon its seat prevents the exhaust products from flowing back when the driving-piston has reached the end of its exhaust-stroke. The gases contained in the box 0 then escape through the pipe 3 and the nozzle e. A quantity of gas-bubbles mixes with the water con-= tained in the tube 8, in jacket a, and in the conduit U, and causes a stirring effect in the chest D. It is evident that under these circumstances a circulation of water is 'set up below the horizontal line 6 c, which said circulation causes a portion of the cold water contained in the reservoir B to rise through the tube 3, which cold water serves to replace part of the hot water contained in the chest D and jacket 0, which descends through the tube t.
The small box or chest 0 acts as an air-reservoir for producing a uniform flow of the products of combustion at e, which products pass in an intermittent manner into the box 0. If the pressure in the box 0 should not be sufficient for effecting the flow of the gases at the nozzle c, it will only be necessary to reduce the cross-section of the exhaust-pipe o *0 at a suitable point q.
For applying the device to a compressor instead of to a gas-engine it would only be necessary to omit the tube to z cc and the chest O and to establish communication between 3 and the air-conduit or gas-pressure conduit. A cock inserted in the communicating conduit would permit of regulating the flow at the nozzle e. This construction is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which A represents the compressor, y the tube leading from the air-conduit to the tank I and q the regulating-cock.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination with a motor and a Water-jacket for the same, of a reservoir for the water-jacket located below it, a supply-cond nit leading from the lower end of said reservoir to the lower part of said jacket, a return-conduit leading from the upper part of said jacket and terminating at the upperend of said reservoir, and a conduit leading from the exhaust of said motor to said supply-cond nit, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination with a motor and a water-jacket for the same, of a reservoir for the water-jacket located below it, a supply-conduitleading from the lower end of said reservoir to the lower part of said jacket, a return-00nd nit leading from the upper part of said jacket and terminating at the upper end of said reservoir, a conduit leading from the exhaust of said motor to said supply-conduit,
and a valve for regulating the pressure therein, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination with the cylinder of a gas-engine and a water-jacket therefor, of a reservoir for said water-jacket located below it, an open chest communicating with the upper part of said water-jacket, a supply-conduit leading from the lower part of said reservoir to the lower part of said jacket, a return-conduit leading from said chest and ter-.
