DRAFT INDUGER.
(Application filed Dec. 1, 189B.)
(No Model.)
....ll 1 I 'l M y I F F ICES CHARLES F. ROBERTS, OF CONCORD, NElV HAMPSHIRE.
DRAFT-lND-UCER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,743, dated April 25, 1899.
Application filed December 1, 1898. Serial No. 697,962. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVest Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Draft-Inducer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a new and useful construction of draft-inducer to be used in the smoke-stack of stationary or marine boilers, the object being to provide a cheap and simple means for producing a draft and preventing condensation of the exhaust-steam Within the stack, inasmuch as the water from the condensed steam soon corrodes the metal.
\Vith this object in view my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the various parts and in their novel combination or arran gement, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view showing the practical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken through the bearings of the fan-shaft, and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of the journal-bearings.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates an ordinary smoke stack or flue in which is arranged a diaphragmB, extending across the entire fine except at one corner, where a supplemental flue O is arranged, said supplemental flue communicating with a fan-chan1- ber D, in which is located a rotary fan E, mounted upon the shaft F, journaled in bearings G, supported upon the brackets H, the fan-shaft being driven by a pulley I, and as the air is drawn in through the openings D and forced out through the supplemental flue O a draft will be created in the flue or chimney proper, A. The diaphragm B has an opening B, over which fits a damper B said damper being operated by a hand-lever B arranged upon the exterior of the fine or stack A, and after the fan has been started the damper is opened and a continuous draft thereby attained, and all condensation within the stack or flue will be prevented.
The bearings Gr are provided with the water-chamber G to prevent the bearings be- .coming too hot, and it will also be noticed that the said bearings have an oil-cup G by means of which the bearings can be lubricated whenever desired.
By reference to Fig. 4 it will be seen that feed and discharge pipes G and G respectively, convey the water to and from the water-chamber with the bearings, by means of which a continuous flow of water passes through the bearing-chamber and maintains a uniform temperature to prevent overheatmg.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap and simple construction of draftinducer by means of which a uniform current of air can be had within the flue or stack, and thereby prevent condensation of exhauststeam within the said. flue or stack.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- In a device of the kind described, the com bination with the stack and chimney of the diaphragm located therein dividing said stack or chimney into the main and supplemental flues, a fan and fan-chamber arranged in the main flue, said diaphragm having an opening therein, a damper for closing the said opening and means for operating the said damper, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES F. ROBERTS.
