SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 623,412, dated April 18, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY MILLWARD, metal-spinn er, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Mary street, St. Pauls, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved lamp for generating and burning acetylene gas and is of special importance in connection with a cycle-lamp. The said improved lamp is designed upon that system of generation in which the water drops upon the carbid and is constructed so that its dimensions are small, its appearance neat, and its working effective and sure. Its general construction issuch as to generate only the amount of gas requisite and to thoroughly dry the same before being burned, this latter in order to prevent the carbonization of the burner.
The said invention will be described herein in connection with the annexed sheets of drawings, in which is shown a lamp suitable for use on a cycle.
In the said sheets a longitudinal vertical section of a complete lamp is shown in Figure 1; a horizontal section in Fig. 2 through the lamps body part, but with a portion of the fore part of the lamp broken away; in Fig. .3 a transverse vertical section of Fig. 1 on the dotted line F; and in Figs. at and 5 parts of the lamp, as shown in Fig. l, separated or detached.
In the said figures the body part a of the lamp, which may be of any suitable horizontal section giving a hollowed-out middle, but which is preferably crescent-shaped, as shown by Fig. 2, is built up of an inner and outer metallic shell 0. a connected and distanced at top and bottom by walls a of, so as to leave a space between them to constitute a chamber or holder 0 for the storage of the water or other liquid used in the generation of the gas, the said chamber 0 being formed by a hollow construction of the lamps body. This water-chamber is provided with an inlet 0 for filling and with a regulating valve or cock 0 for the purpose of withdrawing water therefrom, the last named taking the form of a screw-pin d, having a coned end d and itself therein and nestle within the lamps body as close as possible. The said bell is fitted with a glazed front 6 a cowl c and a reflector e and is hinged to the fore part of the base of the lamps body at a, so that it can be thrown forward clear of the burner by unscrewing a connection 6 The said burner (marked f) is arranged to project from the base of the lamps body into the interior of the bell e and is in communication with the gas-generating chamber, which will be hereinafter fully described. A suitable connection means f is fitted to the back of the lamps body for the lamps connection to the head of a'cycle.
Formed upon the under side of the base of the lamps body a is a central boss or cylindrical part 9 and a ring-recess 9 the lastnamed surrounding the former. This boss has a small hole it within its end, which is in communication with the burner f of the lamp through the space inclosed by the boss g and thence through the burner-tube f, which opens into the top of said space, as shown in Fig. 1. Through the center of the space inclosed by said boss g passes a water-supply tube m, leading from the regulating valve or cook 0 From said cock 0 the tube extends with a slight downward inclination to the center of the space inclosed by the boss g, where it takes a vertical direction and passes through the bottom of the boss g and extends this generating-chamber 0 is formed with a boss 0 and a shallow socket 0 the first named surrounding the latter, the said shallow socket to form a gas-drying chamber and to fit over the boss 9 on the lamp-body and the boss 0 to engage in the recess 9 and to rest upon the flexible material it, therefore making good the joint between the lampbody and the generating-chamber. Centrally within the shallow socket o and projecting through its nearly-closed bottom (which has a hole 0 within it for the passage of the gas from the generatingchamber to the said socket) is arranged an inverted-T-shaped tube 8, which is fixed to and within the said generating-chamber bya screwed collar .9 or by soldering. The shank s of this inverted- T-shaped tube is adapted, when the base proper is connected to the lamp-body, to fit sheath-like over the depending end of the tube on and the head part 8 of the said tube to extend longitudinally within the generating-chamber 0 for the greater part of the chambers length. This head part 3 has a number of perforations 3 within it and is entirely covered with a material such as cotton, wool, fiber, or spongeit being only through this latter that the contact of the water with the carbid is made. The one end of the generating-chamber o is closed by a removable cap to, while the other end U2 is a fixture.
The shallow socket o is filled with a gasdrying material 0 and all gas leaving the generating-chamber by the small hole 0 must, before passing to the burnerf by way of the hole 7t, pass through said drying material 0 The gas-tight connection, which is made between the generating-chamber and the lampbody by the parts g, 9 0, 0 and n, is by reason of the parts being pulled together with the part it between them, this being accomplished preferably by an inclined bayonetslot connection. Any other familiar construction that will accomplish the result aimed at may be used in place of that shown. A water-tight joint is made between the tube 8 and the tube m through a yielding washer w, which prevents any water from the chamber 0 getting to the gas-drying material o if thelamp is at any time inverted.
The water from the chamber 0 reaches the carbid in the generating-chamber by way of the regulating-valve 0 the tube m, the inverted-T-shaped tube 8, the holes 8 and the wrapping the slight pitching of the horizontal part of the first-named tube insuring all the water passed through the Valve instantly finding its wayinto the tube 8, so that when the cock 0 is shut there is no surplus of water left in the tubes m or s. The gas generated leaves the chamber 0 and passes to the burnerf by way of the hole 0 the drying material 0 and the hole It, the said holes being arranged on opposite sides of the lamps center, which insures the gas taking a circuitous course through the drying material.
If necessary, the hollow interior of the boss I a boss 0 and a socket o to engage the parts g g the said socket 0 having a hole 0 within it which communicates with the generatingchamber and the gasway and a flexible ring at which comes between the parts g g and o 0 when they engage to make gas-tight the joint between the body part of the lamp and the generating-chamber, substantially as described.
2. In an acetylene-lamp the combination of a lamp-body part carrying a burner and whose base or lower extremity is provided with a boss 9 and ring-recess g? the boss having a gas-aperture h,and an attachable generatingchambero whose outer surface is formed with a chamber containing gas-drying material which is in communication with the generatingchamber and whose outer surface is formed with parts 0 0 for the engagement with the parts g g on the base of the body substantially as described.
3. In an acetylene-lamp the combination of a lamp-body part a formed into a water-chamber c and with a central recessed part c and which also carries a burner f a bell e fitted with a lens and reflector which is adapted to seat a part of itself within the recessed part 6 a regulating valve or cock 0 fitted to the water-chamber o and which has a water-tube m with an inclined horizontal part leading to a vertical part leading therefrom, a horizontal-extending attachable barrel or cylinder 0 forming the generating-chamber and which is adapted to be connected to the lamps body so as to form its base proper, and an inverted- T-shaped tube .9 carried by and located within the cylinder 0, the shank of said tubes bein g fitted over the Vertical portion of the tube m and its perforated head arranged lengthwise in the generating-chamber, said perforated portion being wrapped with a suitable material, substantially as described.
4. In an acetylene-lamp the combination of a lamp-body part a forming a water-chamber c and fitted with a regulating valve or cock 0 and a burner f a water-tube m fitted to the base of the body part aso as to lead from the valve or cock 0 to the lamp-bodys base and an attachable horizontally-extending generating-chamber 0 fitted with an inverted-T- shaped tube 8 and a gas-outlet hole 0 which is in communication with the burner f substantially as described.
5. In an acetylene-lamp the combination of IO shaped perforated but Wrapped tube 3 and OIL having parts 0 0 and 0 formed 11 pon its exte= drior substantially as described.
