LlD OR COVER FOR MILK-CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,380, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed January 18,1899. Serial No. 702,500. (No modeh To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM ILNEIMAN, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pottstown, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lids or Covers for Milk- Cans, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improved construction of lid or cover for milk-cans; and it consists of a novel manner for enabling the same to be locked in place whereby the accidental disengagement of the lid from the can during transportation is positively prevented,
- provision being also made for preventing theft of a lid and for the interchanging of an old lid for a new one.
It further-consists of an improved manner of forming a closure common to the neck and lid of the can, whereby a tight joint is formed I when the parts are'assembled.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a lid or cover for a milk-can embodying my invention and a portion of a can to which the same is applicable. Fig. 2 represents a vertical sectional view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section on linerooc, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents, on a reduced scale, a side elevation of the lid or cover of the can in detached position.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the upper portion or neck of a milk-can, the same having a pin B attached to the internal periphery thereof and adapted to engage the walls of the curved slot 0 of the lid or cover D, the lower portion of which latter is adapted to contact with the internal ring E, whereby a tight joint is formed between said lid or cover and the interior of the can when the parts are assembled.
F designates a reinforcing-strip located on the interior of the lid D and conforming to substantially the contour of the curved inclined slot 0. The top of the can is provided with snap-hooks Gr or similar fastening devices, the number of which maybe increased or diminished, said devices being engaged by the rings II, which are attached to the chains J, the latter passing through the eyes K, attached to the lid or cover of the can, the opposite ends of said chains or connections being secured to a suitable point L.
The operation is as follows: To remove the cover, the rings H are disconnected from the hooks G and the lidor cover given a slight rotary motion in the desired direction, whereupon it will be seen that it will be simultaneously raised and rotated until the pin B leaves the opening 0, whereuponthe lid can be readily removed. To replace the lid, it is only necessary to place the parts in juxtaposition, so that the pin B will enter the opening 0 and press downwardly upon said lid, at the same time imparting a rotary motion thereto, the parts thus assuming the position seen in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and the lid being looked, after which the rings H are caused to engage the hooks G in the manner indicated in Fig. 1. v
It will of course be apparent that a single chain and its ring H or a single snap-hook G or similar fastening device can be employed without departing from the spirit of my invention, and the contour or inclination of the slot or opening 0 can be changed or varied, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a lid for a milk-can having a curved inclined groove therein a pin attached to the inner periphery of the neck of said can and adapted to engage the walls of said groove, eyes and fastening devices supported on said lid, and connections attached to said can, passing through said eyes and engaging said devices.
2. The combination of a lid or cover for a milk-can having an inclined groove therein, a pin attached to the inner periphery of the neck of said can and adapted to engage the walls of said groove, an eye and a fastening device supported on said lid, and a chain or other connection having one end attached to said can, and its other end passing through said eye and engaging said fastening device.
o. The combination of a milk-can having an annular strip located Within the neck thereof, the inner periphery of said neck, having a pin projecting therefrom a lid or cover for said can, said lid having an inclined curved groove therein, the edges of said groove being provided with a reinforcing-strip, an eye and a fastening'device attached to the 'top of said lid, and a chain or other connec- -tion havingone end attached to thecan and its other end-passed through said eye and engaging said fastening device.
4. The combination of a neck of a milk-can having an annular strip E secured to the in- WM. H. NEIMAN, J n. lVitnesses:
