SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,290, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed September 8, 1898. Serial No. 690,476. (No model.)
i" 0 (Mi whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. SCHLAE- BITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Lancaster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fish-Hooks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to fish-hooks,and more particularly to that class known as triggersct spring-actuated duplex hooks; and the object is to provide a simple, effective, and reliable device of this character.
To this end the invention consists in certain features'of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved duplex spring-actuated fish-hook as it appears when set. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same sprung. Fig. 3 is a transverse section.
1 denotes a thin sheet-metal tube closed at its upper and open at its lower end and formed with a longitudinal slot 2. I
3 3 denote grooved rollers journaled in the open end of the tube, which form guides for the shanks of the oppositely-disposed hooks 4c 4, which are connected by the springs 5, and their upper ends are formed with eyes by means of which they are pivoted to the lower ends of the parallel rods 6 6, which are connected at their upper ends to the follower 7, formed with a lateral lug 8, which extends through the slot 2.
9 denotes a spiral spring encompassing the rods 6 6 and extending between the internal annular shoulder 10 and the follower 7.
12 denotes a spring-arm fixed at its upper end to the tube 1, and in its lower bifurcatedend is fulcrumed the spring-trigger 13, the shorter arm of which is arranged to project through a lateral slot 14 in the tube 1 and engage the follower 7, while its longer arm is formed with an eye 15 to receive the endof the line 16, which passes underthe guide-roller 17 and continues thence to the rod or pole, to which it may be attached in the usual manner.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The hooks are baited, and the follower is pressed down by means of its lug to compress the spiral spring, project the hooks, and engage the inner end of the trigger, as shown in Fig. 1. WVhen a fish strikes one of the hooks, the strain on the line withdraws the shorter arm of the trigger from the path of the follower to release the spring, which in turn closes the hooks together and withdraws them into the tube, as shown in Fig. 2, thus eifectually securing the game between the locked hooks.
What I claim is In combination, the longitudinally and transversely slotted tube 1, the guide roller 17 fixed to the closed end, and the guide-rollers 3 3 fixed in the open end of said tube, the parallel rods. 6 6 mounted in said tube, the follower 7 fixed to the upper ends of said rods and formed with the lateral lug 8, the hooks I 4 pivoted to the lower ends of said rods, the spring-arm 12 fixed at its upper end to said tube, the spring-trigger 13 fulcrumed in the free end of said arm and having one end pro jecting into the path of said follower, and the spring 5 connecting said pivoted hooks, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand inpresence of two subscribing witnesses.
THEODORE A. SOHLAEBITZ.
Witnesses:
