JOHN E. \VALSH, OF NEW- YORK-,N. Y.
COALING VESSEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,268, dated April 18, 1899.
Application filed May 24, 1898. Serial No. 681,6l3. (N0 model.)
To all whmn it perry concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN EJVALSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ooaling Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in coaling vessels; and the invention consists in a combination of devices, hereinafter described, by means of which sea-going vessels can be coaled while at sea towing a lighter or storage vessel fitted out for expeditious handling of coal.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure represents a side elevation of the improved coal-storage vessel and its coal-handling devices in tow of a vessel to be coaled, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the coal-storage vessel.
Upon a vessel A, having, preferably, four separate departments in its hold for the separate storage of different sizes of coal, are mounted, preferably, two masts M M, one between each pair of hatches and provided each with two booms l) 1'), running longitudi nallyin opposite directions, one over each ad'- joining hatch. Each boom carries its trolley and traveling gear, worked, preferably, from a hoisting-engine, and serves to hoist the coal from the hold, preferably in buckets, either to the deck of the vessel A or to small. platforms P P, secured one to each mast of vessel A. Near the top of each mast is secured a cross-piece C C, and from each end of these cross-pieces is suspended a pair of pulleyblocks 0 O, the outer ends of the falls or ropes R R of which are either connected with a trolley or secured to the front mast M of the vessel A or to the rear mast of the vessel to be coaled in a slanting position, as shown in Fig.1 of the drawings. Trolleysit are mounted upon each of these guide-ropes and serve to carry the coal in buckets or otherwise from the front mast M of vessel A to the vessel to be ooal'ed or from the rear to the front mast of the vessel A. A weight IV,suspended from a lower pulley-block 0, holds the guide-rope R in tension, while the rope R is stretched permanently in a slanting position between the masts H and M, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. To the lower pulley-blocks,carrying the rope leading to the rear end of the trolleys, strong ropes a a, connected with drums F F of hoisting-engines,are secured and serve to guide the safe descent of the trolleys't 25, with their freight, and to return these trolleys with the empty coal-buckets suspended therefrom. The platform P on the rear mast is placed higher than the platform P on the front mast, and both platforms serve to support one or more attendants, who receive thereon the load from the hold of vessel A and transfer it to hooks suspended from the trolleys.
Auxiliary booms d d are secured near the top of each mast for the speedy handling of the coal and its safe transfer from a platform to a trolley-hook.
In operating this invention the rope R is passed on board of the ship to be coaled and there secured at the proper height above deck. The speed of the vessels in motion is held to be sufficient to keep the rope R taut. All the coal from the front hatches can now be trans ferred by the aid of the rope R, trolley 25, and then the stern departments must be unloaded, which is eifected by the aid of the rope R and trolley t in addition to the rope R and trolley t. With one man on each platform and several below a very economical and speedy transfer of coal from one vessel to the other can be effected while a vessel is going to sea, the rigging of the rope R and its trolley requiring but little time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a coal-lighter the combination of ahull A, masts M M having cross-pieces C O platforms P I? and booms I) Z), a rope R having one end secured to and passing through pulleyblocks 0 O suspended from said cross-piece O and carrying a weight W, and the other end being adapted to be secured to another vessel, a rope R secured between said masts M M, trolleys it running upon said ropes R R and operated by means of hoisting tackle and engines, as and for the purposes herein ing one end secured to and passing through of hoisting-engines, as and for the purposes 10 pulley-blocks O O suspended from said erossherein shown and set forth.
piece C and carryinga WeightWand the other In testimony whereof I afiix my signature end being adapted to be secured to another in presence of two witnesses. 5 vessel, a rope R secured between said masts JOHN E WALSH M M trolleys 2ft running upon said ropes R R and operated by means of hoisting-tackle lVitnesses:
suspended from said cross-pieces CC and by HENRY O. MEGKLEM, J r., means of ropes d a wound upon drums F F ELMER J. SNYDER.
