To all whom it vncty concern:

Be it known that I, ELLEN MATHILDA sJo- HOLM, a subject of the Kingpf Sweden and Norway, and a resident of Ostjotagatan 18, Stockholm, Sweden, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Baking-Ovens or the Like, (for which I have obtained a patent in Sweden, dated March 13, 1897, No. 7,220; in France, dated Marc 23, 1897, No. 262,252; 111 Austria, dated April 4, 1897, No. 47/l,189, and in England, dated April 24, 1897, No. 7,889,) of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part thereof.

This invention relates to improvements in baking-ovens or the like.

The object of the invention is to provide an oven that shall be economical as regards fuel and cheap in construction, at the same time occupying a comparatively small space.

For the aforesaid purposes my invention consists in certain novel and peculiar constructions and arrangements of the several parts of the oven, as herein described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings I have illus trated my invention as applied to a portable baking-oven and will proceed to describe the best form thereof so far devised by me; but I wish it to be distinctly understood that I do not limit my invention to baking-ovens nor to the particular construction shown, as the same may be somewhat modified without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a longitudinal sectional view of a portable baking-oven according to this invention. Fig.2 shows a horizontal sectional view on line a: y in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a vertical crosssection, and Fig. i a side View, of the same.

In said drawings like numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

Referring to the drawings, number 1 designates the bottom of the oven, said oven resting on wheels 2, thus making it suitable for military purposes or the like. From the fireplace 3 extend two rows of flue-tubes at and 5, the one row running to the left and the other to the right. At the end walls 8 of the oven the tubes in each row are bent or provided with knee-joints so as to run vertically upward a short distance, whereupon they are again bent so as to run horizontally backward to the other wall, where they are again provided with similar bends, and so on. The

horizontal parts of the two rows alternate with Y and lie close to each other in the same plane,

so as to constitute division-walls whereby the oven is divided into a number of bakingchambers 9, 10, 11, and 12. The products of combustion in the two tubes that lie next to each otherin the saiddivision-walls thus move in opposite directions. The two sets of tubes end in two rows in a sheet-iron box or room 13 at the top. The upper end of each row of tubes is covered by a lid 14 15, hinged on one side and provided with a handle 16, extending out through the side of said room, so that the cover may be lifted from the outside more or less. The sides, as well as the top and bottom of said baking-chambers, are lined with sheetiron plates. As the first part of tubes 4 and 5 are liable to become overheated, aspecial thick bottom may be provided in the lowermost baking-room or the bottom of the oven made double, so as to include the first horizontal part of the tubes. For each room there is provided a door 17, by the opening and closing of whichthe heat in the oven and the baking may be regulated, as Well as the rooms ventilated, and windows 18, through which the baking may be observed. The room 13 is provided with a flue 19, while another flue 20, having a damper 21, is attached to the fireplace. The last-mentioned fine is to be used while starting the fire, whereupon it is closed by means of said damper, so that the products of combustion will have to pass through the said tubes 4 and 5 for heating the said baking-rooms 9 12, in which the bread is placed for baking in the well-known manner. Thesaid tubes are provided with soot-holes 22, which are closed by means of plugs which are of such length that by inserting or withdrawing the plug more or less the pipe may be closed (in the knee) for the regulation of the heat, so that it may be equal at both ends of the oven. The said plugs may wholly or partly be made of heat-isolating material. The sides, as Well as the bottom and ceiling, of the oven may be lined or covered with heat-isolating material.

The sides and top of the fireplace 3 are provided with exchangeable plates, between which and the outside wall is room for the air to be forewarmed. For rendering the combustion more complete the air may enter the tubes 4 and 5 through the small holes 25, provided in the tubes for that purpose.

Having now described my invention,.what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a baking-oven or the like, two rows of flue-tubes running from the fireplace in zigzag upward and alternating with each other so as to divide the oven into a number of baking-chambers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In a baking-oven or the like, two rows of flue-tubes running from a fireplace in zigzag upward, alternating with each other, so as to divide the oven into a number of baking-chambers, each row ending in an exhaustroom and the tubes in each row provided with a lid, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a baking-oven or thelike, two rows of flue-tubes running from a fireplace, one row running horizontally to the left inside the bottom of the oven to the end of the same, whereupon it runs vertically a short distance inside the oven, then turning and running horizontally backward to the opposite wall where it again turns upward and backward and so on to the top of the oven where it runs out of the same, the other row running in the same way but in alternate directions, the horizontal parts of the two rows alternating with each other in the same plane, so as to divide the oven into a number of baking-chambers, said horizontal parts being provided with sootholes and plugs for the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A baking-oven provided with a series of compartments in which baking takes place,

said compartments being arranged one above the other and located between parallel branches of zigzag tubes, ascending from a fire-box situated beneath, a portion of said tubes, preferably every alternate one, first passing forward above the bottom plate of the oven, then turning upward along one of the sides of the oven, then passing between the lowest and the next higher compartment to the opposite wall of the oven, then upward along the latter and so on, thus surrounding the compartments referred to, the remainder of said tubes first passing rearward then in a zigzag path like the other tubes, though in the reverse direction, up to a smoke-outlet common to all the said tubes, each compartment being incased with sheet metal and provided with a door, substantially as described.

5. The combination with a baking-oven, of a fire-box beneath the bottom of the oven, interior plates inside said fire-box, two rows of flue-tubes ascending from the upper of said plates in zigzag alternately so as to divide the oven into a number of baking-compartments and provided with perforations where they pass through the space between said upper plate and the top of the said fire-box, an exhaust-room in which said rows of flue-tubes terminate, a damper for each row of tubes in said exhaust room, and adjustable plugs in the said flue-tubes, as andfor the purpose described.
