R. SANDS TUCKER, 0F BROOKLYN, NEW YORK. Lam Patent No. 62 ,236, am: February 19, 1867.
flit: 5rlg2hule refemh to in llgzse Eaters grunt ant making mart of tin same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, RICHARD SANDS TUCKER, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Method of Manufacturing 9. Covering or Insulator for Metallic wires or Conductors used in submarine or other telegraphing, and also an improved mode of manufacturing a paint, varnish, or covering, to be used in the protection of structures of all kinds. Specimensv of the said insulator, of said paint or covering, and of the materials composing the same, accompany this application.
The nature of my invention consists in combining glass finely ground or pulverized with linseed oil or other oleaginous or resiuous'substances and for thepurpose' of insulating telegraph wires I saturate yarns of hemp with a compound composed of the said glass combined with the said linseed oil, tar, or other oleaginous or resinous substances, and closely surround and circumvolute the conducting wire or wires with said yarns.- then surround the said insulator with a covering of wire or tan-ed hempen yarn, or both, as an armor to protect it from external injury and to strengthen the same.
. For the manufacture of said paint, varnish, .or covering, I incorporate by mixing the saidpulverized glass with linseed voil or other oleaginous substance.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is My application of glass finely ground or pulverized, and mixed or incorporated with linseed oil, tar, or other oleaginous.and resinous substances, to'iu'sulate metallic wires or conductors in telegraph cables.
R. SANDS TUCKER.
