SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 622,336, dated April 4, 1899.
Application filed October 20, 1898.
T0 ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS EMERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat-Grips,..of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for holding small boats in an upright position; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class designed for use in a boathouse or on the deck of a vessel and by means of which a small boat-such as a row-boat, life-boat, or other boat of this classmay be held in an upright position, so as to rest at all times on the keel thereof.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification,of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side view of a boat provided with my improvement, and Fig. 2 a cross-section thereof on the line 2 2.
In the drawings forming part of this speciment are designated by the same numerals drawings I have shown at 5 a small boat, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device of the class described comprising a tieplate 6, provided at its lower end with a hook 7 and at the upper end thereof with transverse slots or openings 8, two of which are shown and any desired number of which may be employed. I also provide a supplemental tie-plate 9-, with the lower end of which is pivotally connected at 10 a hook 11, which is provided at its lower end with a downwardly-directed loop 12, and the supplemental tie-plate 9 is provided near its upper end with an outwardly-directed staple or projection 13, provided with a slot or opening 14, through which the staple or projection 13 is adapted to pass, and at the extreme upper end of the supplemental tie-plate 9 is an inwardly and downwardly directed hook 15. I also provide an eyebolt 16, which is adapted to be secured in the floor of a boat-house or the deck of a vessel and which is preferably Serial No. 694,106. (No model.)
provided with a link or ring 17, and the hook 7 at the lower end of the tie-plate 6 in practice passes through said link or ring, as clearly shown in the drawings, and the hook 15 is connected with the gunwale or with the upper edge of the side of the boat, after which the hook 11 is passed through one of the slots or openings 8 in the upper end of the tie-plate 6 and folded upwardly, and the staple or pro jection 13 passes through the slot or opening 14 in the upper end thereof, and I also provide a hook 18, which is adapted to be passed through said staple or projection to hold the hook 11 in place and which is connected with the upper end of the tie-plate 9 by a chain or other fastening device 19.
In the construction shown in the drawings I have applied two of these devices to each side of the boat, and it will be apparent that any desired number thereof may be employed.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and well adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and the object of forming two or more of the slots or openings 8 in the upper end of the tie plate 6 is to provide means for adjusting the device to boats of different heights, as will be readily understood.
It will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages, and I reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A device of the class herein described,
comprising a tie-plate provided with a hook 1 ing a tie-plate, provided with a hook at its lower end adapted to engage a ring or hook secured to a floor or boat-deck, and also provided with transverse slots or openings, a supplemental tie-plate provided at its upper end with a hook adapted to engage the gunwale of a boat, and provided at its lower end with a pivoted arm adapted to pass through said slots or openings in saidtie-plate, and de- 10 vices for looking said pivoted arm in a raised position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 19th day of October, 1898.
THOMAS EMERSON.
