AUTOMATIC WATER-MEASURING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,820, dated March 28, 1899.

Be it known that I, LUCAS JoNKER, a citizen of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, residing at Amsterdam, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic WVater-Measuring Apparatus, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it-appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to automatic water- Ineasuring apparatus for use in connection with a water-meter; and the object of the invention is to provide a mechanical appliance by means of which it is possible to draw a certain quantity of water by the insertion of a coin, and for this purpose the apparatus is attached toand connected with a water-meter of any kind, so that the quantity of water drawn will be registered at once on the dial attached to the meter.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same letters of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view thereof; Fig. 3, a plan view thereof. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of a valve which I employ, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of a slide which forms a part thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the valve A is made fast on a conduit-pipe leading to the water-meter, and a gravity-weight P is provided, which acts in connection with a lever 0, connected with the valve-stem of the valve A and provided with a segmental grooved cross-head O through the agency of a chain or belt Z to keep the valve firmly closed, whereby the lever O is held in proper position to close said valve by gravity, said belt or chain Z being secured to one end of said cross -head and operating in the groove formed therein and over a suitably-supported pulley Z I also provide a sliding block G, having a pin E, which operates ina slot in the lever C, whereby thesliding block G will move in a longitudinal slot h, formed in a frame H, by which the operative parts of my device are supported. The sliding block G is slotted in one side, as shown at g, so that a movable block T, secured to a bar 0, can pass through.
Now if you drop a coin in the slotu it will cover the slotted part of the sliding block G, Fig. 2, so that if you pull the bar 0 by the handle 0 back both the sliding block G and the lever C will move to the right, whereupon the valve A opens up and the water runs out of the conduit through the water-meter ready to be delivered to the buyer. At the same time the sliding block G passes over a vertically-movable bar J, the upper end of which is cut in sloping form at its upper end, as shown at J and pressed upward by a spring K, by which it is held fast, while the block T on the bar 0 returns empty. In this way the coin-piece will be conveyed to the slit S, Fig. 2, through which it will reach the receiver by passing through a pipe S. As soon as the valve A is open the gearing of the register apparatus will begin to w0rk,whereby a brake L will be set in motion, Figs. 1 and 2, and said brake will operate at once, when the water is paid for and delivered, upon a projection on the bar J and press it down, whereupon the sliding block G and with it the lever O are released to return to the original position by means of gravity-weight P, and the valve A closes itself again. The brake L is provided with a projection L which operates ona projection J 3 on the bar J. In order to prevent a partial opening of the valve A, a
second valve B is connected with the conduit.
This second valve B is connected with the bar 0 by means of valve-lever D, which is provided in its outer end with a slot, through which passes a pin F, secured to the bar 0, and the valve A is opened at the place marked on the drawings. opened by a pull on the handle 0 of the bar 0 the valve B closes itself, and opens itself again only when, after the stoppage of the sliding block G, the bar 0, by means of spring R, is moved back, and fraud is therefore impossible.

My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the resultfor which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A11 automatic appliance for measuring water which is adapted to be operated by a coin and which is connected with the conduitpipe of a meter, consisting of a valve A at- -tached to the conduit-pipe, a lever C by which said valve may be opened, aslotted sliding block G and a bar 0 adapted to move in the slot formed in said sliding block, a chute into which the coin is dropped, a vertically-movable bar J in connection with which such parts operate and a registering apparatus by which said bar is operated and a gravityweight for operating said lever, substantially as described.
2. An automatic appliance for measuring water which is adapted to be operated by a coin, and which is connected with the conduitpipe of a meter, said appliance consisting of a valve A attached to the conduit-pipe, a lever C by which said valve may be opened, a sliding slotted block G, a bar 0 provided with a block which is adapted to pass through the slot in the block G, a chute into which the coin is dropped, a vertically-movable bar J in connection with which said parts operate, a registry apparatus by which said bar is operated, a gravity-"weight for operating said lever, and a valve B which is in operative connection with the bar 0 by means of a valvelever whereby said valves A and B are simultaneously operated, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a watermeasuring apparatus constructed as herein described, and adapted to operate after the insertion of a coin, a valve attached to the conduit of a water-meter, a lever for opening and closing said valve, a slotted sliding block G, a bar 0 adapted to move in the slot in said block, and provided with a block T, a vertically-movable bar J in operative connection with said parts, and a registering apparatus in connection with said bar, and also in connection with the watermeter, a weight connected with said lever, a
brake L and devices in operative connection with said brake, and said registering mechan ism, and adapted to operate the bar J, substantially as shown and described.
