To all whom it may concern: .Y
Be it known that I, HENRY'E. CARLTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sorento, in the county of Bond and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Burglar-Alarm Lock, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in burglar-alarm locks.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of burglar-alarm locks and to provide a simple and comparatively inexpensive one designed to be mounted en a door like an ordinary lock and adapted to 'be opened from the exterior only by a person knowing the combination and capable of sounding an alarm should anyone unacquainted with the combination attempt to operate it.
A further object of the invention is to provide av lock of this character which may be readily opened from the interior by a key withoutaft'ecting the combination.
' The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a burglar-alarm lock constructed in accordance with this invention, the outer face of the lock being shown. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner face of the lock, the casing being in section to show the interior construction. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view on line 4 4 of Fig. 2, the notches of the lock-disks being in register and engaged by the lug of the actuating-disk. Fig. 5 isa detail view of the key.

l and 2 designate tumbler-disks mounted, respectively, on a central spindle 2 and a hollow post 3 and adapted to be rotated by the-same to bring peripheral recesses 5 and 6 into register to receive a lug 7 of a disk 8 to permit the latter to be partially rotated for reciprocating a bolt 9. The disks 1 and 2 and the actuating-disk 8, together with the sliding bolt 9,' are mounted Within a suitable lock-casing 10, and the actuating-disk, which is provided with an eccentrically-arranged pin 11, is mounted on a shaft or spindle 12, having an exterior knob or handle 13, adapted to be partially rotated to effect a reciproclearly illustrated in Fig. l of the accompanying drawings. The knob carries an indexfinger or pointer 20, and the disk or flange and the index-finger are adapted to be adjusted with relation to the numbers ofthe dial to bring the peripheral recesses in register and carry them to a point adjacent to the lug 7 of the actuating-disk. The tumblerdisk 1 is provided with an'eccentrically-ar-` ranged pin 21, which is adapted to engage a trip-lever 22 should the permutation-lock be operated by a person unacquainted with the combination, and the trip-lever'22, which is Y fulcrumed between its ends on a suitable pivot 23, has one arm arranged in the path of the eccentrically-arranged projection or pin 21, and its other arm is connected with a spring, which holds the lever in position to be operated. The arm of the trip-lever in the path of the projection or pin is connected by an L-shaped arm 24 with an escapement 25, that carries a bell-hammer 26, extending through the lock-casing and engaging a bell 27, located at any suitable point outside of the same. The escapement engages a springactuated cog-wheel 28, which is connected by a suitable train of gears with a barrel-spring, like the ordinary clock mechanism. One end of the barrel-spring is connected with a winding-shaft 29, which is also constructed in the usual manner and provided with a suitable clutch. The L-shaped arm 24 of the escapement is provided with an eye receiving the trip-lever, .which holds the escapement in engagement with the spring-actuated cog-wheel and locks it out of operation, the spring 30 operating to hold the alarm normally out of operation. Vhen the eccentrically-arranged pin of the disk l engages the trip-lever, it releases the escapement, and the eye of the L- shaped arm is sufficiently large to permit the escapement to vibrate freely when the triplever is depressed. The vibration of the escapement causes the bell-hammer to strike the bell and sound an alarm, which indicates the fact that some one is endeavoring to effeet an entrance surreptitiously.
The sliding bolt, which is actuated by th disk 8, is adapted also t0 be operated from the interior byakey 31,'permanently mounted in the lock-casing and composed of two sections. The inner section, which carries the engaging portion of the key, is adapted to actuate the bolt by engaging notches 32. The stem of the innerportion of the keyis squared, and the outer 01 handle portion ot' the key is provided with a socket to receive the squared stem. The outer handle portion 33 is adapted to be readily removed when desired.
In order to enable the bolt 9 to be reciprocated independently of the permutation-lock, it is provided at its inner end with recesses 33 and 34, adapted to engage the eccentrically-arranged pin Il. The bolt is retained in engagement with the eccentrically-arranged pin 1l by a substantially U-shaped spring 35, provided at its bend with an eye to receive a pin or stud 36 and having one arm engaging the adjacent side of the lock-casing. The other arm is provided with a hook 37 and engages the upper edge of the bolt to hold the latter in engagement with the eccentricallyarranged pin, and the U-shaped spring permits the bolt to rise and disengage itself from the pin 1l when it is actuated by the key. When the bolt is extended, as illustrated in dotted lines of Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings, it may be retracted to open the door from the exterior of the same by rotating the knob 16 to bring the peripheral recesses 5 and G of the tumbler-disks 1 and 2 into register for receiving the lug 7 of the actuating-disk 8. The actuating-disk 8 may then be rotated to slide the bolt inward to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The bolt when in the said extended position may be operated from the interior by means of the key, said key being adapted to engage the bolt and move the same inward Without manipulating the disks, carrying the recess 3i into engagement with the pin ll. A reverse movement of the key returns the bolt to the extended position.
The invention has the following advantages: rllhe burglar-alarm lock, which is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, is adapted to be readily mounted on a door like an ordinary door-lock, audit is capable of indicating when an attempt is made to open a door surreptitiously. The
connection between the sliding bolt and the out departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Ina device of the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk, a sliding bolt detachably interlocked with the disks, a lug carried by the actuating-disk, tumblerdisks provided With peripheral recesses adapted to register and receive the said lug, and means for operating the tumbler-disks, substantially as described.
2. In a device ot' the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk provided with a lug, a sliding bolt connected with and adapted to be operated by the disk, tumblerdisks provided with peripheral notches adapted to register and receive the said lug, a central spindleA connected with one of the tumbler-disks, a hollow post receiving the spindle and connected with the other tumbler-disk, a dial, a graduated flange carried by the post and arranged adjacent to the dial, and an index-finger or pointer carried by the spindle and located adjacent to the graduated flange, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk having a lug,tumblerdisks having peripheral recesses, independent means for operating the tumblerdisks, a sliding bolt connected with the actuating-disk, a trip-lever arranged to be operated by one of the tumbler-disks, a bell, and alarm mechanism normally held out of operation by the trip-lever and provided with a bellhammer arranged to engage the bell, substantially as described. i
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk, permutation-lock mechanism engaging the same,- an eccentrically-arranged pin, a bolt inter-locked with the eccentrically arranged pin, and means for operating the bolt independently of the permutation-lock mechanism, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk provided with a lug, stops located at opposite sides of the lugs, tumbler-disks having peripheral recesses arranged adjacent to the lug and adapted to receive the same,means for operating the tumbler-disk, and a bolt connected with the actuating-disk, substantially as described.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of an actuating-disk having an eccentrically-arranged pin, permutation-lock mechanism engaging the disk, a sliding bolt provided with recesses adapted to engage the eccentrically-arranged pin, said bolt being provided with notches, a key arranged to engage the notches and lift the bolt out of engagement with the pin, and a spring holding IOS Iov5
