THOMAS V. WALLACE, OF MONONGAHELA CITY, PENNSYLVANIA.
DUMP-CAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,186, dated March 14, 1899.
Application filed November 8 1897. Serial No. 657,822. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, THOMAS V. WALLACE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Monongahela City, lin the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump- Oars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dump-cars.
The invention has for its object the provision of a new and novel means of fastening the end-gate of du nip-cars, and is particularly adapted for use in coal-mines.
With the above object in View the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and wherein like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing the end portion of a dumpcar fitted with my improved end-gate fastener. Fig. 2 is a face view of the fastener-latch removed from the car. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stop-block removed from the draw-bar.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals l designate the sides of a dump-car, and 2 is the end-gate, which has the cross-bar 3 attached to its upper end and is suspended upon the eyepieces 3 at the upper end of the carbody. To the lower body portion of the car is suitably secured the flat draw-bar 4, and
upon this bar is arranged the block 5, which forms a stop for the latch. Upon the pin 7, Which is made fast to the end-gate, is pivoted the latch 6, which has the extended handlever @formed thereon for operatin g the latch. The latch when in its normal position, or when closed, enters between stop-block and the outer face of the end-gate, and is prevented from going too far by the pin l2, which is se cured to the end-gate. A small space ll is cut out of the lower end of the gate, so that 'When the latch is lifted and the car dumped the end-gate may open without interfering with the stop-block 5. A strap 8 is secured to the end-gate by thebolts 9 and 10 and serves to guide the movements ofthe latch.
When the car is to be dumped of its contents, the latch is lifted by means of the leve-r portion c. The car is then tilted and the endgate swings outward, relieving the car of its contents, and when the car is righted the latch is replaced.
Having thus fully shown and described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a dump-car, the combination with the end-gate pivoted to thesides of the car at the upper end thereof, and having a central slot or cut-away portionA at the lower edge, and the draw-bar provided with a stop-block', of the latch comprising the horizontal portion pivoted at one end to said gate, and the other end bent outwardly and then horizontally forming a handle and the vertical portion adapted to engage with said stop-block, the horizontal guide for said vertical portion and the, stop-pin secured to saidw gate, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS V. NVALLACE.
